The Celeron E1500 from Intel is a great introduction to the world of 64-bit computing. Built with the Intel 64 architecture, it can handle all of today’s 32-bit applications and provide a bridge to tomorrow’s 64-bit world. The 800MHz FSB works with Intel’s Smart Memory Access to maximize data availability to the processor by pre-fetching data from system memory.

In today's digital world, multimedia is king. Intel’s Advanced Digital Media boost improves media performance in video, audio and editing applications. Pushing executions to 1 per clock cycle, performance is improved in two ways. The number of operations is doubled since it isn’t skipping cycles anymore, and with today’s faster processors, there are more clock cycles in a given time period.

  • newegg Intel Dual-Core Celeron Processor The Intel Dual-Core Celeron processor delivers a balanced level of proven technology and exceptional value for desktop PCs. Based on a new energy-efficient microarchitecture, this Dual-Core Celeron processor enables smaller, quieter, and more capable desktop PCs.
  • newegg Intel Advanced Smart Cache Intel Advanced Smart Cache Technology dynamically allocates the shared L2 cache to each processor core based on workload. This efficient, multi-core-optimized implementation increases the probability that each core can access data from the fast L2 cache, resulting in significantly reduced latency for frequently used data and overall improved performance.
  • newegg Intel Extended Memory 64 Technology (Intel EM64T) Enhances next-generation IA-32 platforms with 64-bit addressability and related instructions, allowing flexibility for both 64-bit and 32-bit applications and operating systems.
  • newegg Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology (EIST) EIST allows the system to dynamically adjust processor voltage and core frequency to decrease the average power consumption and heat production. Combined with existing power saving features, EIST provides an excellent balance between supplying power when you need it and conserving power when you don’t.
  • newegg Execute Disable Bit (EDB) Intel's Execute Disable Bit function can prevent certain classes of malicious "buffer overflow" attacks when combined with a supporting operating system. Execute Disable Bit allows the processor to classify areas of the memory where application code can execute and where it cannot. When a malicious worm attempts to insert code into the buffer, the processor disables code execution, preventing damage or worm propagation.

5 out of 5 eggsCheap, Cheerful, and Capable

Pros: * Runs cool. In spite of the quoted TDP of 65 watts, real-world TDP seems to hover around 30 watts lower.

* Easily fast enough for 720p HD video playback. It can grunt through 1080p, but works best when paired with a graphics card to take some of the load off. In a pinch, this is a really swell processor for a HTPC.

* Faster than any Pentium D I've ever tried, and wasn't a bad choice for a cheap LAN party box when it was new. Still a good choice for basic home serving needs. Terrific for a dedicated server.

* Depending on motherboard compatibility, the e1500 can be a terrific way to breathe life into a system running an older Pentium 4 or Celeron D.

* Nearly as fast as a Core 2 Duo for most day-to-day computing tasks. Also overclocks well.

Cons: * No hardware virtualization restricts its utility in running virtual machines.

* The hobbled quantity and associativity of L2 cache makes a noticeable performance difference compared to a Core 2 Duo, or even a Pentium Dual Core. On a clock-for-clock basis, this can be up to a third slower in heavily multithreaded games and media encoding applications. Probably not a great choice for a full-time gaming box or workstation.

* The stock heatsink/fan has no power management features. It isn't terribly loud, but also isn't quiet.

Other Thoughts: I've had one of these running in a HTPC since mid-2007, and see no reason to upgrade. It's really just plain solid.

4 out of 5 eggsSpeedy and Cheap

Pros: Inexpensive, Dual Core Workhorse! I'm sure that if I ran a specific benchmark test, that this would loose to my 2.1 GHz core 2 Duo machine, but just using the devices, I can't tell a difference. It came with a heat-sink and fan. You just can't beat that.

Cons: No virtualization support. Although I was able to get Windows 7 running in VMWare fusion, but neither XP nor Vista would load.

Other Thoughts: I feel like intel strips features out of processors in order to keep higher prices on better performing chips. I have a feeling that they all cost about the same to produce. This is just my assumption and is not based on any evidence.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat for a cheap HTPC

Pros: they are cheap and they OC well... nice and stable... with a 2.8GHz OC they are pretty snappy

Cons: limited somewhat by the low L2 cache... but still good for movies and basic stuff...

Other Thoughts: used in my wife's PC for playing WoW.

5 out of 5 eggsSee Below

Pros: N/A

Cons: N/A

Other Thoughts: At the moment this chip is 49.99, which is the same price as the celeron E3200 above. Unless your motherboard can only support a 65nm processor, there is no need to spend more on a lesser processor than the E3200

5 out of 5 eggsGood CPU for a low price.

Pros: Dual-core 64bit CPU for 50 bucks. Swapped out my old Celeron 420 for this in under ten minutes with no problems.

Cons: The stock cooler has a plastic no-screw mounting system that doesn't fit in the motherboard I have. I used my previous heatsink and fan to cool this CPU with no problem, so 5 eggs anyway.

Other Thoughts: Much better than the 1.6gHz single-core Celeron 420 I originally had. Now running W7 x64 with 3 gigs of RAM alongside this CPU with no issues.

4 out of 5 eggsEverything Expected

Pros: Price
Quiet, low profile fan
Produces very little heat, no aftermarket cooler needed
Uses very little power
Excellent for a HTPC with onboard GPU

Cons: Slow...I mean REALLY slow (appears to be slower than the 5 year old AMD64 dual core it replaced)

Other Thoughts: Lost 1 star for being slower than expected, but gets 4 stars overall for meeting my requirements overrall.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome bargain cpu...but...

Pros: 65nm dual core for under $50 shipped... the actual cpu power used is well under 65w, it stays nice and cool with it's stock cooler (for a stock cooler, that is), the hsf is not very noisy at all for a stock cooler, the multiplier is open from 6x to 11x...

the particular CPU I got actually runs at 1200(300 actual)x10 (3GHz) on default voltage with stock heatsink stable and error free with 24 hours of prime95, that is one heck of an overclock, not many CPUs have ever gotten that high let alone with stock volts and heatsink.

Cons: The CPU only has 512KB total L2 cache, that kinda stunts it's performance some... it does not support intel VT which is needed for 64 bit VMs and also windows 7's XP mode... the hsf has a quiet but slightly annoying ticking sound when being speed-controlled (it is the 3 pin non-PWM type), and the cpu is a bit outdated with the 65nm fab process.

Other Thoughts: I built a new system 3/1/2009 using this cpu and a gigabyte P43 based motherboard with the intention of upgrading the cpu when better 45nm duals and quads with vt got much cheaper. I gotta say I have been very impressed with this CPU. It was a great purchase.

The only real problem with this CPU is that (right now) you can get the E3200 wolfdale for $3 more, which has intel VT, 1MB L2 cache, 200MHz more stock speed, and seems to be able to be overclocked well over 3GHz on average with stock voltage and heatsink. This CPU was wonderful while I used it, but it is simply outclassed by the newer wolfdale. The wolfdale however is 45nm which requires a motherboard that supports 45nm processors - for older motherboards the cpu here is the best budget/overclocker choice by far.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Cheap price for a 2.2ghz dual core...Can't go wrong there. Works great out of the box

Cons: The stock fan is lacking some guarding; pretty easy to get wires caught in it if you don't cablegami your builds at all
