Intel Pentium Dual-Core E6500 Wolfdale 2.93GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor BX80571E6500

  • 1066MHz FSB
  • 45 nm Wolfdale 65W
  • 2MB L2 Cache

With the Wolfdale core, Intel pours more power into the Pentium package. The 45nm process lets Intel reduce power requirements to 65W. Lower power means less CPU heat, which means lower system heat and longer system life. They also pack more features into the chip.

The L2 cache has been bumped to 2MB and the Front Side Bus has been pushed to 1066MHz. You can now use both DDR2 and the hot new DDR3 memory for extreme performance. They also boosted memory access and execution speed with Wide Dynamic Execution and Smart Memory Access. These technologies work together to let the processor handle more instructions with more data per clock cycle.

The Advanced Digital Media Boost feature has been enhanced with the addition of the SSE4 instruction set and Intel HD Boost, to give your entertainment experience better audio and video processing. It will also help with speech recognition, engineering and scientific applications. Most important of all is the enhanced security that comes with increased speed and encryption power.

  • newegg Specialized Dual-core Microarchitecture The Intel Pentium processor includes dual execution cores in a single processor to enable execution of parallel threads or applications on separate cores, resulting in revolutionary dual-core performance, breakthrough processor energy efficiency and exceptional system response when running multi-threaded or multiple demanding applications simultaneously. The innovative 45nm dual-core technology optimizes thermal performance for reduced power consumption and noise.
  • newegg Intel Advanced Smart Cache Intel Advanced Smart Cache Technology dynamically allocates the shared L2 cache to each processor core based on workload. This efficient, multi-core-optimized implementation increases the probability that each core can access data from fast L2 cache, resulting in significantly reduced latency for frequently used data and improved performance.
  • newegg Intel Extended Memory 64 Technology (Intel EM64T) Intel EM64T provides an enhancement to Intel 32-bit architecture by enabling the mobile processor platform to access larger amounts of memory. With appropriate 64-bit supporting hardware and software, platforms based on an Intel processor supporting Intel EM64T can enable use of extended virtual and physical memory.
  • newegg Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology (EIST) EIST allows the system to dynamically adjust processor voltage and core frequency to decrease average power consumption and average heat production. Combined with existing power saving features, EIST may provide an excellent balance between providing power when you need it and conserving power when you don’t.
  • newegg Execute Disable Bit (EDB) Intel's Execute Disable Bit function can prevent certain classes of malicious "buffer overflow" attacks when combined with a supporting operating system. Execute Disable Bit allows the processor to classify areas in memory where application code can execute and where it cannot. When a malicious worm attempts to insert code in the buffer, the processor disables code execution, preventing damage or worm propagation.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid CPU

Pros: Rock solid stability. Good performer for the price range.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I just got around to ordering a new system (going with Sandy Bridge), but this is still a solid CPU. I am passing this system down my daughter to replace her older system.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks well

Pros: Now in the possession of a friend and still going strong.
Great for a low-cost server. Not DOA.

Cons: none

5 out of 5 eggsWorkhorse!

Pros: I've got two of these running in Linux machines. Great for video encoding. New 4 and 6 core processors are certainly more efficient, but for the total price of a system these are hard to beat. Power consumption is low on these. My total system at 100% usage is still under 90W.

Cons: Harder to recommend these now as price drops on newer chips.

4 out of 5 eggsGood for $80

Pros: Since I bought this CPU on 7/29/10, it is still running strongly. One thing not change is price... Still $80 after one year... Should come down to around $60................

Cons: Not so far after one year................

Other Thoughts: WEI for my system
CPU (overclock to 3.52 GHz) = 6.8
4 gig of Mem = 6.9
Aero graphic = 3.7 (I'm looking to upgrade my 8400 GS card)
Game graphic = 5.0
Hard drive = 5.9 (just bought new 1 T hard drive)

4 out of 5 eggsVery hot

Pros: Very fast; what else to say?

Cons: This processor runs hot. With the stock heat sink/fan, a Prime95 torture test got this well above 90C.

Other Thoughts: I bought a fancier heat sink and after proper installation, I couldn't get this thing to reach 80C.

Be sure to keep your computer clean and well-ventilated, and the heat shouldn't cause much trouble.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat processor

Pros: If your trying to squeeze those last years out of your socket 775. This is a great buy. Dropped right in without a hitch.

Cons: 0

5 out of 5 eggsDelicious!

Pros: - Worked right out of the box, that's already fantastic.
- Overclocked it to 3.22GHz without destabilizing. Still works without any errors or failures after a week.
- Coupled with a GTX 260 the rig I put this CPU in handled any game I threw at it, though granted I didn't try to play at high/ultra settings but I'm not that difficult to appease. Even BEFORE overclocking the CPU the games worked pretty well.
- Price seems fair to me with all things considered.

Cons: - None that I can make note of. Hurrah!

Other Thoughts: - Rig specs:
* 4.00 GB RAM
* Nvidia GeForce GTX 260
* ASRock G31M-S R2.0 motherboard
* Windows 7 64-bit

5 out of 5 eggsRuns great

Pros: Outputs hdmi streaming from a vortexbos server beautifully.

Cons: I can't use it in two computers simultaneously...oh well. ;-)

Other Thoughts: I don't know how well the included heat sink and fan works. I installed the cpu in a Shuttle XG 41 that has its own cooling mechanism.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat CPU

Pros: Actually a surprisingly good overclocker. I replaced my E6400 with this because of the incredibly low clock speed, and got this baby up to 3.77 liquid cooled. It holds my buddy's i7 in prime. To say the least I'm impressed.

Cons: It is what it is. No cons really.

Other Thoughts: For the price, you can't argue. I've been throwing 1.45V at this thing all day for months and it doesn't complain.

1 out of 5 eggsBuyer Beware

Pros: When they work - and 99% of the time they work - Intel processors are pretty rockin'. Pentiums are seriously out-classed by any Core 2, i3, i5 or i7 offerings, but for most things - especially running Linux, which puts generally less demand on your hardware than Windows - this will fill the needs of anyone who's budget is tight and for whatever reason is stuck with a 775 platform.

Cons: Not this particular CPU, but fair warning to you should the admittedly rare occurrence happen and you get a defective CPU from Intel. If you're passed the time to deal with Newegg and have to go to Intel for a replacement you can forget about it.

I had a bad CPU four years ago from AMD and they had a new one in my hands withing a few days after speaking with a real live person - even paid for the return shipping on the defective one. I got a bad chip from Intel and have been given the runaround for two weeks now.

Woe be to you if you happen to get a defective Intel chip.

Other Thoughts: I think I've bought my last Intel CPU. AMD gives you much better customer support, and that just adds to the value of their products.
