Today's demanding personal computing world requires more than just processor speed. You need the power of the Pentium D 950, offering the simultaneous operations found only in a dual core processor. This nimble chip features two processor cores each running at 3.4GHz with an integrated 2MB L2 cache. Intel's manufacturing process reduces power consumption and improves thermal performance permitting faster processor speeds without heat-induced failures. Users today want the most productivity and enjoyment from their PCs when running multiple applications at the same time. The Intel dual core processor gives you the resources to support both multitasking and multiusers. Drive your system to new levels with this high performance chip that gives you two processors in one.

  • newegg Dual-Core Processing with 2x2MB L2 Cache Intel dual-core Pentium 950 processors have two complete processor cores in one physical package running at the same frequency. The cores share the same interface with chipset and memory, but each core has its own set of registers and cache for truly parallel computing. Each processor core has its own 2MB L2 Cache (4MB total) enabling improved overall system performance by allowing each core to have faster access to larger amounts of the most often used area.
  • newegg Intel Virtualization Technology (Intel VT) With Intel VT, one hardware platform functions as multiple "virtual" platforms. For business, Intel VT offers improved manageability, limiting downtime and maintaining worker productivity by isolating computing activities into separate partitions. In the home, Intel VT allows creating unique user environments for multiple family members using the same platform simultaneously.
  • newegg Intel Extended Memory 64 Technology (Intel EM64T) Intel EM64T provides an enhancement to Intel 32-bit architecture by enabling the desktop processor platform to access larger amounts of memory. With appropriate 64-bit supporting hardware and software, platforms based on an Intel processor supporting Intel EM64T can enable use of extended virtual and physical memory.
  • newegg Execute Disable Bit (EDB) Intel's Execute Disable Bit function can prevent certain classes of malicious "buffer overflow" attacks when combined with a supporting operating system. Execute Disable Bit allows the processor to classify areas in memory where application code can execute and where it cannot. When a malicious worm attempts to insert code in the buffer, the processor disables code execution, preventing damage or worm propagation.

5 out of 5 eggsok card

Pros: steady, reliable

Cons: I bought this 1 1/2 years ago and it was great today this cpu is simply old. so I'd say with todays CPU's this card is a little slow

Other Thoughts: when I bought it was 600 dollars it was one of the best CPUs back than. Its is a great CPU but the technology is demanding more today and its simply too weak for todays demands. its great for business applications. Might be too weak for gaming. I played many games like CD2, CD4, BF2 and with my non-gaming video card I was playing all games on high settings and was no lagging or complained about having too slow CPU. This CPU never failed and I am still using it. intel CPUs are the best CPUs period. I have Intel D955XBK board, Intel P D 3.4, video card FireGL 7100, 4GB of RAM, CoolerMaster 750W power supply, 7SATA HDDs. system never failed on me , and in almost 2 years of using this CPU( I turned my system off only a few times in 1 1/2 years) never crashed, never got too hot, blah blah My system runs 24/7/360 and is still running. Depending on what you need this CPU is very reliable, you can count on it. will not fail period. unless u don't know what ur doing

3 out of 5 eggsobsolete and comparatively overpriced

Pros: good at SeventeenOrBust and one or two other distributing computing projects, but that's about it.

Cons: low performance/Ghz
not energy efficient
doesn't scale much better than c2d
more expensive than faster chips.

Other Thoughts: c2d is WAY WAY WAY WAY better.

4 out of 5 eggsONLY if C2D not compatible

Pros: Newegg ROCKS! Nobody beats their service IMHO. Decent prices, and you won't fight about RMA's

Best Intel CPU (ONLY)if you can't run the Core 2 Duo's

For most simple tasks, it' as fast as a C2D, but NOT when you load up the video, Divx, or other CPU intensive programs.

Cons: Runs hot UNLESS you either get the heatsink JUST RIGHT, or you have water cooling. Mine runs at 3.6(air cooled) on a Gigabyte 965 mobo, and it ran 50's IDLE until I used Arctic Ceramique.

Temps now 38C idle, 52C @ 100% CPU use on both cores.

Other Thoughts: Get a Core 2 CPU if you can. I cannot recommend this CPU unless you need some speed and CAN'T upgrade. It really liked a better power supply and line conditioner / UPS. That made it more overclockable. Definitely get a big heatsink/fan unless you like listening to fans whine. Reapply the thermal paste VERY carefully (up to ten times if needs be!) to get it just right.

I have several Pentium D systems, from stock D840 to overclocked D920 @3.7GHz on air. They are all slower than my AMD 4800 X2 (@2.6GHz).

I have Allendale E4500's running at 3GHz that make the latter systems look stupid slow, and I tinkered with a Q6600 at 3.2GHZ on air (just makes you laugh how fast it is). I would recommend the Q6600 on a P35 or 680 mobo for future proofing.

For MUCH cheaper, you can build AMD and get a snappier everyday performance, but 80% (by seat of the pants experience) of raw computing speed for Spybot/ Defrag/ Video encoding, etc.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid Processor

Pros: Love this chip, had it for over a year and never noticed anything wrong with it. Easy to install. Handles new games with ease while still running other programs.

Cons: factory heatsink does not cut it.

Other Thoughts: The fan it comes with sucks, you will need to purchase a third party heatsink for it.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat dual boot processor

Pros: I wanted my first build to have resistance to that 'fast obsloescence' of high tech electronics. The D950 is the ticket. It gives me dual core capabilities. I'm dual booting a 32 bit and a 64 bit o/s. This is a really fast processor. Intel did a great job with this one.

Cons: None

5 out of 5 eggsAfter a year, still pleased

Pros: Well, after a year, I still rate this chip highly. I've compared it with C2Ds in intense number crunching and geospatial anlayses, and the 950 performs well.

Cons: It runs very, very hot. It seems designed for a climate-controlled workspace, so be fore-warned. It works best when ambient temps are less than 22C, unless water cooled.

Other Thoughts: After a year of loud fans, I water cooled the 950. Its now the perfect chip, even at 28C ambient air temps.

5 out of 5 eggs3.4 rocks multitasking

Pros: Multitasking is what this processor does best. Ultra fast even when running tons of programs and unzipping large files. Lightening fast when doing almost anything. Unzipping a 1 gig .avi file used to take a minute or more on my old 3.2 intel processor (single core) while now it take 5 seconds! WOW!

Cons: Yeah, if you're running many programs like game (for me it's the Sims 2) and you unzip multiple large files (movies, ISO, etc) then you'll see some slowdown.

Other Thoughts: My old processor was a 3.2 single core. This processor KILLS my old one. Starting up windows takes only a few seconds. Games run fabulously fast. I haven't found much that will slow this processor down except running one large program (3d programs, games, etc) while trying to unzip/unrar multiple large files that are 1gig or more.

Yeah, these are being discontinued due to the core 2 duos, but these are excellent processors for the price, and will tide you over until the core 2 price drops.

5 out of 5 eggsEclecticos

Pros: 27°C With Stock CPU Fan.
Fast as Lightning. Verry Happy with it. Easily Overclocks to 3.76Ghz without Overheating.
Works great with Vista x64!

Cons: FSB Speed.

Other Thoughts: Benchmarks have shown the Difference between Core 2 Duo and Dual Core are Milliseconds.

Will upgrade to Quad Core in a Year or So.
