The Intel Pentium processor family based on Intel Sandy Bridge codename is the right choice for building an ideal basic desktop system. The introduction of the latest generation 32nm Hi-k manufacturing process technology brings improvements to the Intel Pentium processor over the previous generation Core microarchitecture.

Moreover, Intel HD Graphics and the memory controller have been integrated into the processor, providing great graphics performance and higher memory bandwidth. Intel Smart Cache provides a higher-performance, more efficient cache subsystem while the revolutionary Intel Microarchitecture accelerates overall system performance across your applications through energy efficiency. These Pentium processors are ideal for more traditional basic desktop systems with the power to run applications simultaneously and efficiently.

  • newegg Intel Microarchitecture Based Dual-core Processing The Intel Pentium processor includes dual execution cores in a single processor to enable execution of parallel threads or applications simultaneously, resulting in revolutionary dual-core performance, breakthrough energy efficiency and exceptional system response time when running multi-threaded applications, or multiple demanding applications. The innovative 32nm fabrication technology optimizes thermal performance for reduced power consumption and noise.
  • newegg Intel HD Graphics Intel HD Graphics with dynamic frequency up to 1.1GHz delivers smooth HD video playback and mainstream 3D gaming without the need for add-in video cards or decoders. It also supports a wide range of display connectivity options, including HDMI and DisplayPort and is dual display capable.
  • newegg Intel Smart Cache Intel Smart Cache Technology dynamically allocates the shared cache to each processor core based on workload. This efficient, multi-core-optimized implementation increases the probability that each core can access data from faster, more efficient cache subsystem resulting in significantly reduced latency for frequently used data and improved performance.
  • newegg Integrated DDR3 Memory Controller The Integrated Memory Controller optimizes data bandwidth with two channels, offering stunning memory read/write performance through efficient prefetching algorithms, lower latency, and higher memory bandwidth.
  • newegg Intel Virtualization Technology (VT-x) Increasing manageability, security, and flexibility in IT environments, virtualization technologies like hardware-assisted Intel Virtualization Technology (Intel VT) combined with software-based virtualization solutions provide maximum system utilization by consolidating multiple environments into a single server or PC. By abstracting the software away from the underlying hardware, a world of new usage models opens up that reduce costs, increase management efficiency, strengthen security, while making your computing infrastructure more resilient in the event of a disaster.
  • newegg Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology (EIST) EIST allows the system to dynamically adjust processor voltage and core frequency to decrease average power consumption and average heat production, which means of enabling very high performance while also meeting the power-conservation needs.

5 out of 5 eggsworks great, but stock fan died

Pros: Has run great since purchased. I consider the fan a small hiccup and have been very happy with this purchase.

Cons: fan that came with it stopped running

Other Thoughts: ordered on 12/25/2011, fan just went out this week. Today being 2/15/2013.

5 out of 5 eggssurprising performance

Pros: Excellent low cost high performance ratio.
use a discrete graphics card so i cant rate on chip graphics performance but paired with a card am able to play MW3 at normal settings @80 fps or better usually 91 fps

Cons: none at this price.

5 out of 5 eggsLittle Power House

Pros: Powerful little chip. Use in a low powered gaming PC for my better half. Paired with a GeForce 550ti and get similar gaming performance to my own 2500K with a 550ti. No frills, no special features, but it does what it says.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: For a basic CPU I couldn't be happier.

5 out of 5 eggsRemarkable Speed and Value

Pros: - Price point.
- Speed. This lil' guy screams.
- Proven SB architecture.

Cons: NONE.

Other Thoughts: Used this for a build for my mother. Using the on-board HD2000 graphics, I couldn't be more pleased with the results. From Office programs to Blue-ray to HD video streaming, this thing just doesn't skip a beat. I really couldn't tell a difference from my own i52500k. I'm sure if I tried to play Skyrim the differences would become evident. However, for basic uses as mentioned above, this thing soars above and beyond my needs. Just an outstanding value.

Build (All from NewEgg):

CPU- Pentium G840
MB - GIGABYTE GA-H61MA-D3V
RAM - G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB
HD - Samsung by Seagate Spinpoint F3 HD502HJ/ST500DM005 500GB
Win 7 64bit

5 out of 5 eggsPrice competitive with AMD

Pros: Combined with a Z68 chipset, this is very price competitive to AMD if you want on-board video and dual X8 PCIe slots. In a server setup, this leaves both X8 slots available for hardware RAID cards.

Cons: Could always be cheaper. Still possible to build a cheaper AMD solution depending on what features are important to your buying decision.

Other Thoughts: I used this in a new Ubuntu file server. The processing power is overkill but the built-in graphics and low power draw are perfect for the system. With LSI RAID card, 4x 3TB 7200RPM SATA drives plus a 2.5" SATA boot drive, power draw is less than 100 watts.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: It works. It is being used in a home office build all it does is run Quicken. Idle around 28C have never seen it go over 36C Stock cooler.

Cons: Probably what most people complain about and thats the Heatsink, but it was all that hard

Other Thoughts: Proc: Intel Pentium G840 Sandy Bridge 2.8GHz
MB: ASUS P8H61-M LE/CSM
PSU: CORSAIR Builder Series CX430 V2
Case: Rosewill R101-P-BK MicroATX Mid Tower
HD: WD 500GB Blue

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome cheap chip

Pros: Not even Prime95 can get this thing to go over 40c on the stock cooler. My ambients are super low but still, this thing is CRAZY EFFICIENT. Loving it

Cons: Can't overclock. It's good for what it is but I'd love to be able to push this baby. Still though, 5 eggs.

5 out of 5 eggsSnappy Little Bugger

Pros: This is 1 very prompt CPU. I was only expecting a good program runner (Word, Exel, Adobe Photoshop, Finepix) all at one time for the work that is done on this PC, but this 'Little Puppy' pops those programs with ease and power to spare. I was Totally Impressed and HIGHLY REcommend this 'Bad Lad'

Cons: The Factory Fan is a little weak in design as the plastic seemed like it was going to crack, but is just bent and flexed back after pushing to install.

Other Thoughts: She is more Bang for the Buck than i Ever Expected. Building a economy or mid-tear system? Well, don't spend the big bucks on a quad core or one that is rated higher as this one is worth every penny. Get 1 before the price goes up or they cut back on supply (as i have seen them do in the past)
