Want a processor with dramatic performance gain at low operating voltage? The new Intel 22nm 3-D Tri-Gate transistors technology employed in the Intel 3rd generation Core processor makes your dream come true with an incredible leap in combination of performance and power efficiency. The 3nd generation Intel Core i5 processor delivers even more performance automatically when you need it and now a better visual PC experience built-in. With Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0, the 3nd generation Intel Core i5 processor increases your PC’s speed automatically for your demanding applications. It also includes new built-in graphics with DirectX 11 support and a rich set of new features for a stunning and seamless visual PC experience with no additional hardware required. That’s visibly smart performance with a boost.

  • newegg Intel Revolutionary 22nm transistors technology Transistors have now entered the third dimension. Intel brings 22nm 3-D Tri-Gate transistors (the core of microprocessors) to its third generation Core processors Ivy Bridge. Intel's 3-D Tri-Gate transistors are an important innovation needed to continue Moore’s law and deliver an unprecedented combination of performance and power efficiency. By forming conducting channels on three sides of a vertical fin structure, Tri-Gate transistors can have multiple fins connected together to increase total drive strength for higher performance. The new 22nm 3-D Tri-Gate transistors can deliver up to 37% performance increase at low voltage and more than 50% power reduction at low voltage.
  • newegg Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0 More intelligent, energy-efficient, and dynamic than previous generation, Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0 gives you accelerating performance when you need it. It delivers an even greater automatic speed increase by allowing processor cores to run faster than the base operating frequency for demanding applications if the processor is operating below power, current, and temperature specification limits.
  • newegg Intel smart cache Intel Smart Cache Technology dynamically allocates the shared cache to each processor core based on workload. This efficient, multi-core-optimized implementation increases the probability that each core can access data from faster, more efficient cache subsystem resulting in significantly reduced latency for frequently used data and improved performance.
  • newegg Integrated memory controller Integrated memory controller enables two channels of DDR3 1333/1600 MHz memory, resulting in up to 25.6 GB/sec memory bandwidth. Plus the memory controller's lower latency and higher memory bandwidth delivers amazing performance for data-intensive applications.
  • newegg Built-in visuals The visual features built into the 3nd generation Intel Core processor family deliver everything you need to enjoy a stunning and seamless visual experience. Intel Quick Sync Video and newly-added Intel Advanced Vector Extensions (AVX) make media processing incredibly fast. New built-in Intel HD Graphics with DirectX 11 support delivers discrete 3D graphics performance without the needed cost and power of a discrete graphics card, and features Intel Clear Video Technology that enhances video playback, image quality, and color fidelity for a premium visual experience. What’s more, add another dimension to what you see on your PC with Intel InTRU 3D technology which supports stereoscopic 3D Blu-ray playback in full 1080p resolution over HDMI 1.4 and premium audio.
  • newegg Intel Virtualization Technology (VT-x) Increasing manageability, security, and flexibility in IT environments, virtualization technologies like hardware-assisted Intel Virtualization Technology (Intel VT) combined with software-based virtualization solutions provide maximum system utilization by consolidating multiple environments into a single server or PC. By abstracting the software away from the underlying hardware, a world of new usage models opens up that reduce costs, increase management efficiency, strengthen security, while making your computing infrastructure more resilient in the event of a disaster.

4 out of 5 eggsFast, included heat sink not reccomended

Pros: * Lower priced than most intel i7's
* Great performance
* Don't have to purchase or install thermal paste
* included heat sink+CPU fan
* recommended for gaming
* Quality Intel support pages

Cons: * included heat sink+fan is difficult to install (see other thoughts), does not work very well once installed "properly"
* may not be the fastest processor on the market

Other Thoughts: I installed the processor with the included heat sink and the computer ran fine, for about 30-60 minutes before it "blue-screened" then would not boot up for several tries, then worked for 30-60 minutes again. I used the manufactor (Intel) site to run a diagnostic test software (stress test, temperature, power). It failed the temperature test, I refitted the heat sink and tried again five times, then I just re-installed my old heat sink+fan on this new processor and it passed. Why didn't I do that in the first place? Could have saved myself a lot of trouble.
...Why the included heat sink+fan combo is bad, is because the heat sink doesn't use screws to install into the motherboard, it uses pins instead (look up pictures of these pins if you want more information). Because of these pins, the heat sink [usually] cannot be installed firmly onto the processor. If attempted to be installed firmly, the pins tend to not hold the grip. In my experience, I could lock it down, but I could wiggle it (the heat sink).

* I' have built, assisted, observed, and taken apart multiple computers before (a dozen?).

* I chose this processor because a reputable site said this card was the most compatible with my graphics card (their stated reason being, a CPU that is too fast for the graphics card is not quite as efficient)

(if your getting the evga 650 ti ssc (company is not endorsed, but their product is important to the CPU match recommendation) I highly recommend this product)

* my performance increase was very very high, but I can only speak for myself, because I upgraded much more than just the processor in my computer.

* I will update this review along with my increased ownership.

5 out of 5 eggs3450 vs 3470

Pros: Ivy bridge with PCI-e 3.0 support at a reasonable price.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Researching comparing i5 chips for a new build. The i5-3450 and i5-3470 are priced the same. But, per Intel (http://ark.intel.com/compare/65511,68316 ) the 3470 supports some things the 3450 does not. Given that, if your MB choice supports the 3470, there is no reason not to go with the 3470.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing

Pros: I have been nothing but pleased.
- Very fast
- Easy to "throw into turbo"
- Runs much cooler than expected

Cons: Built in graphics. But, besides not even needing them and just feeling it was noteworthy, it's obvious and you should know before buying anyways just based on the item description. Again, noteworthy but nowhere near enough to take an egg off.
