Intel Xeon Processor E5-1600/2600 Product Families
IT organizations around the world are driving higher value into their businesses by virtualizing their data centers to reduce costs and adding automation to improve service levels, efficiency, and agility. Intel Xeon processor-based servers provide the foundation for this innovation. They account for the majority of all servers in today's virtualized data centers and clouds, and they also power many of today's highest-performing workstations.

The latest Intel Xeon processor E5-1600/2600 product families take these advantages to new heights with up to 80 percent higher performance than the prior generation and even better energy efficiency. Importantly, these processors also include advanced technologies to help solve the storage, networking, and security challenges arising in today's increasingly dynamic computing environments.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Luck finding one

Pros: Excelent chip with only a slight performance drop from the E5-1660. Designed for workstations - my use - Autodesk Building Design Suite - Ultimate

Cons: This item is factory controlled by Intel - i.e. quantity to the mfgr's - Dell, HP, etc. Intel's Distributor's have infrequent quantities, thus very difficult to find.

Other Thoughts: I was able to obtain this chip through a distributor located on Intel's chat rooms - only by accident. Persistence is the key. Know that if you find it, buy it, for opportunity only presents itself once.
This is one of those "the world isn't fair" kinda things. It shouldn't require a high degree of luck to stuble upon an item that performs so well at a fraction of the price. In short - Intel controls the market it sells it's chips too - so they are in charge, not the consumer. The good news is - they have a product that performs to spec.

1 out of 5 eggsstill waiting for intel to "untray"

Pros: Optimized SB line. I have been waiting a good year for that one.

Cons: Impossible to find. Intel sells it only in tray OEM.
My speculation is that:
1)it's harder to make than w3680 e3-1200 series for a relative price and huge performance gain therefore it competes too much and wins high against any of its brothers.
2) too much competition for IB and relatively high competing against Haswell in same market line that would limit gain between architecture lines.

Other Thoughts: Between AMD who think the workstation market does not exists and well the desktop market can just use degraded server processor and be happy with it. As well as an Intel who poops on my wallet and wants to force me to buy more mainstream uniprocessor or older architecure then in final I still sit on a pile of cash.
I wait and see game and I don't care. My Q6600 is really old now, I lost most of my USBs on my motherboard but this situation does not please at all with uniprocessor for workstation hence I raise my mid finger and say I 'll wait.
though every PC component manufacturer must bare not seeing a dime of my pocket in the meantime and because of Intel.
Cheer...
