Modernize on Intel® infrastructure

Efficient IT infrastructure starts with industry-leading server technology. New Intel® Xeon® processors reduce server space, cooling costs, and energy use, while the Intel® 10GbE Server Adapter simplifies network design and storage complexity. Industry trend assessments show that adopting high-ambient temperature designs raises optimal temperature set points, which significantly reduces data center cooling and power utilization costs.

1 out of 5 eggsNewegg specs are wrong!

Pros: Everything you would need for a server.
6 cores
VT-D

Cons: Newegg specs states that it supports up to 1866Mhz, but it does not. I should have looked on Intel's spec sheet. I had already spent the money on the 16GB 1866 MHz RAM sticks.

4 out of 5 eggsit's a beast

Pros: Intel, fast, low power consumption

Cons: Expensive for what it is

Other Thoughts: Using two of these in a multipurpose workstation to do all kinds of very processor intensive tasks. The system is will be doing high-def video editing, audio production, 3d modeling and flow/stress simulations. I just got it up and running and haven't started working on any intense projects yet so I can't comment on what it is really capable of.

System got a 1565 CPU rating in Cinebench

Designed a custom water cooling loop that keeps the processors below 36*C at full load. According to a few cpu monitoring applications my clock does't seem to ever drop below 2.9GHz even with the system fully loaded. Doing basic tasks I run between 3.1 and 3GHz. Seems to work well with 2 16gb sticks of KVR16R11D4/16I Kingston 1600 ECC RDIMM. Didn't like anything non-ecc but could be a motherboard issue too.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome CPU for VMWare lab server

Pros: I picked up 2 of these to build a VMWare server for my home lab. These are a little on the pricey side but will give me plenty of headroom for running lots of VMs.

Cons: Make sure your motherboard has the latest BIOS to support these new CPUs!! I ordered a Supermicro motherboard and it would not POST. After speaking with Supermicro support, they advised me that I had an older BIOS and would need to either send my board in to be flashed or find a Sandy Bridge Xeon. Thankfully, once I got it flashed it worked fine.

Other Thoughts: I had been using higher end Core CPUs for home lab VMWare white boxes, but glad I finally took the plunge and went with Xeons this time around.
