4 out of 5 eggsfast but expensive

Pros: very fast

Cons: overpriced

Other Thoughts: not worth the money over a 4930k, buy that instead

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing Processing Power

Pros: I do extensive live-streaming and video rendering, and intense gaming and this processor is able to do all three at the same time. It is extremely snappy, does not run hot in the least bit, most of the time my temps are in the low 80Fº mark with the Corsair H100i. Would buy again 10/10

Cons: None, this thing is a beast and was a breeze to setup.

Other Thoughts: Love the L3 cache, 15 MBs is a beast.

5 out of 5 eggsRidiculously Fast

Pros: There's nothing I can't throw at this thing. Incredible speed.

Cons: Price of course.

Additionally, this processor does have quite a bit of heat associated with it. Not anything too terrible, but do make sure you have a good cooling system.

5 out of 5 eggsWorkstation Hero

Pros: Fast is a bit of an understatement in most cases. When it comes to highly computationally demanding tasks like Cinema 4D and Autodesk Maya, 4960X still blows my mind with its rendering speeds. What used to take me upwards of five minutes on my old AMD Phenom II X6 1090T now takes me around 30-45 seconds.

Although it's probably overkill for this use, this CPU also performs like a dream in Ableton Live and FL Studio. My old CPU very rarely failed to keep up/cause audio stutter, but this one has yet to let me down in even the most complex projects.

Although the 4960X is primarily a workstation CPU, it still handles games like a champ, almost tripling my FPS in many CPU-limited games like Planetside 2. It won't match a 4770K with a higher single-core performance, but this processor is meant to be used in hyperthreaded situations more than single-threaded ones, so I definitely wouldn't call that a "con".

Cons: If I recall correctly, the maximum operating temperature for this CPU is 62-64°C. With a Corsair H100i closed-circuit water cooler, this CPU idles around 38-42°C, hovers between 48-50°C during heavy use, and nears 54°C at full load. I worry slightly how temps so close to the maximum might affect its longevity in the longrun, but I have yet to see the temperature come within 8°C of the maximum, so I don't consider it a huge deal.

Other Thoughts: This is by far a perfect choice for a workstation. With 12 threads, it can handle literally anything you throw at it.

But if you're wanting a gaming computer, steer clear of this one. The 4770K is a much better choice for single-core/single-thread applications for about $700 less.

5 out of 5 eggsFast Good modern CPU

Pros: Fast, stable, easily cooled CPU. The Intel Core i7-4960X Ivy Bridge LGA-2011 6 core CPU is sort of a newer version of the previous i7 3970X, but it only uses 130 watts instead of the 150 watts the 3970 uses. With the right hardware, you can push it just as far and still have stable bench tests.

Cons: Too Expensive! Requires a good motherboard, RAM and CPU cooler to really use this CPU to it's full potential. You should also consider using a good hard-drive.

Other Thoughts: Only buy this CPU if you're going to pair it with a good motherboard, RAM, CPU Cooler, and hard-drive. If you use sub-standard components with a CPU like this you defeat the whole purpose.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat CPU

Pros: Great performance and an improvement over my previous AMD Six-Core which I bought three years back.

Cons: $$$ Still not seeing the extreme performance improvement to justify the high cost, though I have to admit I have only had it for a week.

Other Thoughts: Using a Corsair closed loop liquid cooler and even at full load haven't seen the CPU temp go over 45 degrees. Seems like the combo is working great now I need to start playing with overclocking it.

5 out of 5 eggsFast Processor

Pros: Peak of current desktop CPU market. Most or all chips seem to be able to get great stability up to at least 4.5 GHz. The die-spreader thermal interface material is known to be solder, leading to more efficient cooling. Using the XSPC Raystorm 750 AX360 (tri-radiator), my temperatures are around 30C at idle and 70C at full load, with maximum core excursions (after several days of full load) around 78C (as recorded by HWMonitor).

Cinebench 15 scores are around ~990 at stock and ~1200 at 4.5 GHz.

Cons: Some chips, like mine, seem to require higher voltages for stability. Although an earlier reviewer achieved 4.6 GHz at 1.346V, mine required 1.414 V for stabilty at 4.5 GHz. On the other hand, I am at 1.424 V at 4.5 and have been perfectly stable for almost 2 months, with about 30% of this total time running scientific computations in MATLAB at full load. 1.424V gives stability at near-idle at 4.7 GHz, but crashes on load. I do not have a desire to go higher as I hope that this computer will work reliably for at least a few years.

Other Thoughts: Those with a lot of money to burn (>4k) and some need for many-/multi-threaded workloads may wish to consider a Xeon based system instead. With xeons you will sacrifice some per-core power for huge bulk power gains if you have it in your budget (~4-6k). But if your budget is huge (>8k) (e.g. consider the E5-2697 v2), you can have the same per-core power (before overclocking the 4960x), but have 2-4 times as many cores to work with. Regardless, the overclockability of the 4960x makes its per-core power virtually unbeatable.
