5 out of 5 eggs  Fast, Freaky Fast

Pros: This is a very fast processor. I originally thought the investment was not worth it, but after considering the options decided on it anyway. I do not regret that decision. It eats through video compiling live a hot knife through soft butter. I built a monster PC that will last me quite a while. Although the investment was significant, I built a machine that should last a good while. I feel strongly that although this was a premium, I will get the life and speed necessary to offset that investment.

Cons: The cost, but most enthusiast chips are for a select audience.

Other Thoughts: I have since bought a second one that I want to use of my wife's PC. These chips rock. I may upgrade the motherboard before I will need to upgrade this chip. Too bad I cannot put both of these CPUs in one motherboard to make a machine that could be extraordinary.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Investment

Pros: For all the haters, I'm going to explain why this chip is worth the xtra money. I bought an extreme edition chip back in 2009. The one I bought was "Intel Core i7-965 Extreme Edition Bloomfield Quad-Core 3.2GHz LGA 1366". 5.5 years later, I'm still using this cpu and am able to play the latest games while watching a movie (blu-ray ripped to iso using clone drive) without even taxing that old cpu. The only complaint I have is that I can't uprade my motherboard since the chip and socket aren't supported any longer. I'd really like to get USB3.0 on that machine LOL. I probably still have 2 - 3 (maybe more) years of being able to run anything I want on my comp.. at that point, it will be closing in on a 10 year old machine. Oh, and I haven't overclocked this chip at all.. it's running with factory specs.

Cons: Initial investment is steep.

Other Thoughts: In my situation, the investment was worth it.. I have a sandy bridge chip in my second machine that I had to put a beefier cooler on just to do the same stuff I can do on my 5 year old extreme chip that's running on stock fan/heatsink.

You end up saving because you won't need to build another machine for a decade or so. You will just need to upgrade vid card and maybe RAM once in awhile.

With other chips, you generally end up building every 4 years or so.

5 out of 5 eggsIntel Core i7-4960X Ivy Bridge-E 6-Core 3.6GHz

Pros: fast as hell

Cons: none so far

Other Thoughts: Ive read the reviews. i understand the get your moneys worth. all the reviews say that you can get a lower cpu that will best this one if you overclock it. stock speed to stock speed this one is better and overclock it from what i read up to 4.8 with the right config is a treat you dont need to oc it 24/7 just when you need it.

and lets be honest if your after speed why would you get a lower type of cpu just to oc it to get past this cpus stock speed

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing Processing Power

Pros: I do extensive live-streaming and video rendering, and intense gaming and this processor is able to do all three at the same time. It is extremely snappy, does not run hot in the least bit, most of the time my temps are in the low 80Fº mark with the Corsair H100i. Would buy again 10/10

Cons: None, this thing is a beast and was a breeze to setup.

Other Thoughts: Love the L3 cache, 15 MBs is a beast.

5 out of 5 eggsRidiculously Fast

Pros: There's nothing I can't throw at this thing. Incredible speed.

Cons: Price of course.

Additionally, this processor does have quite a bit of heat associated with it. Not anything too terrible, but do make sure you have a good cooling system.

5 out of 5 eggsWorkstation Hero

Pros: Fast is a bit of an understatement in most cases. When it comes to highly computationally demanding tasks like Cinema 4D and Autodesk Maya, 4960X still blows my mind with its rendering speeds. What used to take me upwards of five minutes on my old AMD Phenom II X6 1090T now takes me around 30-45 seconds.

Although it's probably overkill for this use, this CPU also performs like a dream in Ableton Live and FL Studio. My old CPU very rarely failed to keep up/cause audio stutter, but this one has yet to let me down in even the most complex projects.

Although the 4960X is primarily a workstation CPU, it still handles games like a champ, almost tripling my FPS in many CPU-limited games like Planetside 2. It won't match a 4770K with a higher single-core performance, but this processor is meant to be used in hyperthreaded situations more than single-threaded ones, so I definitely wouldn't call that a "con".

Cons: If I recall correctly, the maximum operating temperature for this CPU is 62-64°C. With a Corsair H100i closed-circuit water cooler, this CPU idles around 38-42°C, hovers between 48-50°C during heavy use, and nears 54°C at full load. I worry slightly how temps so close to the maximum might affect its longevity in the longrun, but I have yet to see the temperature come within 8°C of the maximum, so I don't consider it a huge deal.

Other Thoughts: This is by far a perfect choice for a workstation. With 12 threads, it can handle literally anything you throw at it.

But if you're wanting a gaming computer, steer clear of this one. The 4770K is a much better choice for single-core/single-thread applications for about $700 less.

5 out of 5 eggsFast Good modern CPU

Pros: Fast, stable, easily cooled CPU. The Intel Core i7-4960X Ivy Bridge LGA-2011 6 core CPU is sort of a newer version of the previous i7 3970X, but it only uses 130 watts instead of the 150 watts the 3970 uses. With the right hardware, you can push it just as far and still have stable bench tests.

Cons: Too Expensive! Requires a good motherboard, RAM and CPU cooler to really use this CPU to it's full potential. You should also consider using a good hard-drive.

Other Thoughts: Only buy this CPU if you're going to pair it with a good motherboard, RAM, CPU Cooler, and hard-drive. If you use sub-standard components with a CPU like this you defeat the whole purpose.
