5 out of 5 eggsGood choice for those not interested in over-clocking

Pros: This CPU is fast and there is a cost benefit if you are into over-clocking. While playing Crisis 3 the CPU stayed below 60 degrees C. the whole time without extra cooling other than the fan that came with the unit. Our case does have plenty of ventilation though.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Processor is pretty easy to install although we had not done a build in a while and we did manage to mess-up the first attempt at installing the fan and in the process placed quite a bit of stress on the MB. The instructions that come with it are skimpy at best.

5 out of 5 eggsIntel i7-4790 Quadifies

Pros: What a Great CPU for the money. Sure the others are more costly and have some cache extras, but for a CPU with Quad Core design at 3.6GHz and when coupled with a Mid to High End MoBo like the ASUS Z97-A LGA 1150 it is a Rocket. With the MoBo having great features just for adjusting the cores and being over-clockable it is truly a Real Monster of a CPU. I have now built three systems with this CPU all on the same ASUS Z97-A MoBo and one is seriously over clocked with Killer Kingston HyperX RAM and YES it is water cooled for this application.
The stock fan is decent, not as cheap s it looks once installed. You just have to be SURE to push down hard enough to get the Legs to Lock in place and it does require more pressure that i like to put on most Plastic Parts, but this is High Impact plastic capable of this type of force - Just don't go crazy in Over Kill Pressure or you will Kill/Break a Mounting Leg/s for sure.
The price is very comparable for the CPU speed and functions. Can't complain even if doing a High-End Gaming Unit.
Still i think Intel could be a little more prudent and with a i3 and i5 CPU this is a Decent cooling fan for those CPU's and the Heat-Sink is adequate, but when you jump to the i7 CPU arena i believe a different Fan and HeatSink should be employed/provided.

Cons: None to mention of any great importance except the Fan and HeatSinks as noted in the Pro's area

Other Thoughts: A Beefier Fan and Heatsink could be a Benefit for all i7 CPU's but does the job. It takes more force to secure the mounting legs than i desire to place on plastic parts.
Lastly there is a lag in the fan kicking in at the initial startup of a New Build. I have checked other MoBo Feedback and the same problem is persistent though out and it is that the CPU must heat up to a certain temperature for it to actually have the MoBo kick in the volts to get it turning. Sort of strange as when i built the First unit i was just about to turn it off thinking the FAn was a DOA, but after just a couple seconds it fired up as the temp went up on the CPU. So this not a Freaky one time occurrence s it has happened on all 6 of the New Builds i have done.
Because it is a state of the MoBo sending a signal (if you have a signal BIOS) to start the fan at a specific operating Temp and increase the speed as the temp rises i can't see deducting an EGG for this because it is built in certain MoBo's that way.
So don't - Freak Out - 'Like i Did' - when i fired up my First New Build and the CPU fan was not turning right away as it only happened on the initial start-up and has not happened since. This happened on every one of the 6 units i built so far all were ASUS MoBo's.
I did not take off an EGG for the Fan installation Force as nothing broke and it does the job intended. What else can be stated?

5 out of 5 eggsThe Need For Speed

Pros: This is the CPU for the Gamer or Over-clocker and is not a Killer Budget component. Coupled with the proper MoBo and RAM (even without a Bad-Lad Video card) this is a True Monster.
You can tweak the cores and if going to do some serious over-clocking Do Not Use the stock fan. It will not be sufficient for this realm of End-User Enthusiasts.
The stock fan is fine for nominal use and maybe some over-clocking, but once you reach the Higher End of the Processors capabilities along with some Whip-A RAM you will definitely need a different cooling system or get ready later on to purchase a new CPU and possibly another MoBo to go with that little infraction.

It is a serious CPU with plenty of power and the price is not a Wallet Buster.
A sure Fire Speed Bullet right out of the box.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Would be nice to have a little more Beefed Up Fan and Heat-Sink for this Grade of CPU, but if not doing any serious tweaking it does the job nicely coupled with proper Case Cooling Fans.

Looking for a Serious CPU for your gaming needs this one delivers the goods

5 out of 5 eggsVery Nice CPU

Pros: This is a great processor. It has very smooth and consistent performance. Temperatures on this CPU are very comfortable and steady.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Some might say that since this isn't a K-series that it is not capable of being overclocked. That is not entirely true. While the multiplier in this CPU is locked at a max of 40, it can be adjusted. This means with the correct motherboard you can set the multiplier at 40 and maintain that 4.0GHz base clock. However, that is not it. You can also adjust the BClk value, with the correct motherboard. The default BClik is at 100MHz I successfully increased mine to 110MHz. This means the CPU runs at 4.4GHz in turbo mode, and at 4.0GHz at standard (you can force the multiplier to 40 and stay at the 4.4GHz, which is what I have done). I have a Corsair H100i and at this clock under full load, temps hold at 62C and at idle they hover between 27C and 32C.

5 out of 5 eggsSmooth and Quick

Pros: Had this CPU running for about a month, no issues at all. Stable, lightning quick, every program runs smoothly and fast.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Used this CPU on a Gigabyte motherboard, GA-H97-D3H with 16 GB of Crucial Ballistix Tactical DDR3 1600 RAM running at 8-8-8-24. The SSD is a Samsung EVO 256 GB and PSU is a SeaSonic G Series @ 550 watts. Video is the 4790's built-in HD Graphics 4600.

As you can tell from the H97 chipset, I am not overclocking, and use the computer for "general usage", i.e., no gaming or other intensive use. As such the included stock heatsink and fan work well for me, 25 - 35 deg C at idle and light usage.

5 out of 5 eggsRuns well at reasonable power

Pros: I've built two Haswell systems in the last couple of weeks, one with a Gigabyte motherboard and one with an ASRock. I'm running the processors at 4GHz with DDR1600 RAM. They've passed overnight sys_basher tests at the 4GHz speed. When running sys_basher (which runs all the cores at 100% load) I'm seeing the following temperatures with the included heatsink,

Core 0: +62.0°C (high = +80.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 1: +53.0°C (high = +80.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 2: +54.0°C (high = +80.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 3: +57.0°C (high = +80.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)

Cons: The memory matters. I had a lot of trouble with several different sets of DIMMs however I've found that G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 32G works perfectly. I used the G.Skill in two different systems and it's running fine at 1600 in both.

5 out of 5 eggsSurprisingly fast

Pros: I thought my upgrade from an old i7 920 (4 coresx2) would be a marginal improvement, but this one is fast! My video rendering time is cut in half and I didn't know web pages could be loaded that fast - I always assumed that I was constrained by network speed.

Cons: None

5 out of 5 eggsFast

Pros: Very fast and responsive, doesn't run too hot when I play games like sleeping dogs usually runs at 40-50 celcius, with my Zalman fan cooler at about 50-60%ish fan speed.

Cons: Isn't a K series processor(definitely isn't a reason to dock an egg, you're stupid if you'd be mad at Intel because you cant OC it.)
