The Intel 4th generation Core i5-4690 processor is based on the new 22nm Haswell Microarchitecture for improved CPU performance. Advanced power management innovations help keep power consumption in check. New compute instructions ensure enhanced performance per cycle. Improved Intel integrated graphics enables discrete-level graphics performance. Extract more power from your Haswell core-based processor.

  • newegg Haswell Microarchitecture on 22nm process The new Microarchitecture (code name Haswell) has full integrated voltage regulator (FIVR) for simplified motherboard design. It delivers improved CPU performance and enhanced overclocking over its previous generation Microarchitecture.
  • newegg New 4 generation Intel Core processor family instructions Haswell core-based processors come with Intel Advanced Vector Extensions 2 (Intel AVX2). Intel AVX2 expands integer data to 256-bit SIMD to increase the performance of integer operations. It also offers new capabilities such as Gather and FMA (Fused Multiply-Add). Additional new instructions accelerate key algorithms including parallel extract/deposit, bit manipulation operations and new rotates/multiplies/shift. The AES-NI performance is also improved.
  • newegg Intel processor graphics with Dx11.1 & OPenCL 1.2 Haswell core-based processors offer improved integrated graphics. The integrated graphics supports DirectX 11.1 for optimized graphics performance and OpenGL 3.2 & OpenCL 1.2 for enhanced general purpose computing in GPGPU supported applications. It also features digital display repartition, where digital display ports are wired directly to the CPU and analog displays are handled by a Random Access Memory Digital-to-Analog Converter (RAMDAC) located in the Platform Controller Hub (PCH). It supports up to three independent displays: HDMI, DVI, Display Port, VGA (via Lynx Point).
  • newegg Haswell power management innovation Haswell core-based processors offer advanced power management. It has 20x + improvement from prior generation and is automatic, continuous, fine-grained, transparent to well written SW.
  • newegg Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0 More intelligent, energy-efficient, and dynamic than previous generation, Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0 gives you accelerating performance when you need it. It delivers an even greater automatic speed increase by allowing processor cores to run faster than the base operating frequency for demanding applications if the processor is operating below power, current, and temperature specification limits.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat CPU.

Pros: The temps on this are very low, the speed on it is acceptably high, and it is a quad core CPU from Intel. With a 212 EVO from CM it was also able to ramp up to 3.8ghz even though it isn't an overclocking chip, solid performance.

Cons: None to date.

5 out of 5 eggs2 years later

Pros: Fast.

Cons: 84w tdp

Other Thoughts: I don't know what happened to me recently, but I've been caring more about packing a punch from a PC minus all the unnecessary watt consumption....

I ended up selling this CPU to my friend and buying a 4960T (also a quad core, that only has a TDP of 45w!) 2.5ghz with turbo of 3.3ghz.

Benchmarks barely notice the difference. Maybe overall this cpu is about 18% faster. But I'm not encoding any videos (yet) so I don't really care.
I could have gotten a 35w TDP 4670T dual core with HT, but figured for another 10w why not future proof it a bit since prices were similar.

I also ridded of my Mini ITX GTX760 that pulled 200w on full load. Got a Mini ITX GTX950 that now takes a 6 pin instead of 8 and has a ~90w TDP i believe.

Even sold my 1.5v DDR3 1600mhz 7-8-8-24 1T ram for 1.35 DDR3L 1600mhz 8-8-8-24 1T ram and run them at 1.25v.

PC used to pull 300w on full load of GPU and CPU... now it wont even get to 200w and it gets better FPS.

What a difference.

Now looking to eliminate my LCD screens that take up 280w while all 3 are on for some LED backlits that take up 80w total for 3.

Wish they had a 80Plus Gold Modular PSU that was 300w... my CS450m is now too much for my mini ITX.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Product! Love it!

Pros: -Very user friendly
-Handles casual game play VERY well. No issues supporting single-core games.
-processing speed has been steady w/o issues since day one

Cons: -Not an i7 :P
-Have nothing to say wrong

Other Thoughts: Ive had this core running daily for over a year, often running multiple applications at a time, including music and updating programs, etc.
Money was tight during my complete overhaul last year. This card has handled everything well w/o issue.
I'm planning on upgrading to an higher i-series down the road for preference reasons, but I've had zero issues with this core.
Highly recommend this for gamers who want a real solid, decent gaming system on a budget.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat processor, very snappy!

Pros: Bought one of these to replace a tired old core2duo e6400. What can i say, difference is night and day. This processor is screaming fast by comparison. Handles games and multitasking with ease. Have not overclocked as of yet, don't feel the need to.

Cons: - Wasn't free.
- Doesn't make me coffee.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great.

Pros: Much computes!

Cons: What cons?

Other Thoughts: Not much to say. I bought this to replace my old q6600 box after many years of faithful service.

I plugged this into an asus z97-e board and it fired right up and has been trouble free as one would expect. My box starts up in under 5 seconds and does not slowdown under any stress that I can throw at it.

I was unsure if i should spend extra money on an i7, but really this i5 doesn't leave me wanting more. I made the right call.
