5 out of 5 eggsSmokes my AMD FX 8350

Pros: I've always used AMD, because of the price point, but I purchased this for a build for my son. I'm impressed, this thing smokes my FX 8350 and I almost regret not building an Intel system for myself. However I'm waiting for the AMD Zen processor lineup before I build my next rig.

Cons: None - maybe the price, but at this price point, I really can't complain.

3 out of 5 eggsNeeds aftermarket cooler

Pros: Fast chip, it's Intel.

Cons: I do not overclock. I have a clean, dust free full tower (yes large) case with good airflow. I keep my house at 72 degrees. I have an 80mm fan pushing air over my drives up front. I have a 120mm fan pushing fresh in front of my CPU, I have the stock intel cooler securely fastened the first time with the proper amount of thermal paste on the chip and another 120mm fan pulling air out behind the CPU. At idle it runs at 27 degrees celcius but run Prime95 for even a few seconds and you start hitting 90 degree temps. I even had to cut the CPU time to 60% on BOINC (seti@home) for fear of overheating. Already ordered my Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO which Intel really should pay for.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat CPU

Pros: - Runs fairly cool: about ~35 degrees on idle with the stock cooler, up to about ~50 degrees from hours of gaming
- Significantly better VALUE than most AMD options at the moment (especially for gaming)

Cons: - The stock cooler is not the greatest, a little noisy

Other Thoughts: My best advice for processor purchasing for the current i5 line-up:

- Find whatever Haswell i5 is on sale and buy it. If the unlocked version (has a 'k' on the end of the name) happens to be on sale, you should get an aftermarket cooler so you can take advantage of the over-clocking without dealing with over-heating (assuming you have the Proper MoBo chip-set).

- I personally believe that the best VALUE is to get an H97 motherboard (no over-clocking), buy a locked i5 Haswell processor (when it's on sale), and you'll be fine with the stock cooler. HOWEVER, if you're serious about minimizing the noise you'll want to get an aftermarket CPU cooler anyway, so this option might not be the best value for you.

5 out of 5 eggsWorth every penny

Pros: Fast and smooth performance. When needed it will ramp up to a bit over 4Ghz, but for non-games it hovers around 800 - 1400 Mhz and runs everything just fine.

Runs very cool on the stock heat-sink.

When it ramps up to 4Ghz, the chip never goes above 125 F.

When it is idling(800 Mhz) it hovers around 90-93 F.

Yes, with the stock heat-sink.

The fan on the heat-sink is small and quiet.

Cons: It doesn't make me sandwiches.

Other Thoughts: I don't know how the embedded graphics are since I use a real video card but this processor is screaming fast and runs cool.

What more do you need?

5 out of 5 eggsi5 4690

Pros: Great, affordable processor for my first ever computer build. It was between this and the i7 4790 and for what I want to do (moderate gaming) I don't feel I am seeing any loss in performance going with the i5.

The base clock is advertised as 3.5 GHz but with the Turbo Boost technology and watching the clock speeds in Core Temp, this thing pretty much acts like a 3.9 GHz cpu whenever it needs to.

Cons: I don't like the included cooling solution. I cleaned the heatsink off and used Arctic Silver 5 per their instructions for this cpu family but Prime95 pushed temps to 170*F before I stopped the test. One of the push pins was also able to pop out of its motherboard mounting hole with the pin still locked and the risk of the heatsink separating from the cpu during operation because of that was reason enough to get an aftermarket cooler.

Other Thoughts: I'm sure Intel knows better than I do what is necessary cooling for their cpus but there's something to be said about taking into account the layperson's perception of what 'should be'. It seems to me that the cooler you can keep a cpu, the better, so when there are good aftermarket cooling options for ~$40 I don't see why Intel couldn't offer something better. Or just omit the cooler altogether and pass some savings onto the consumer.

5 out of 5 eggsWonderful

Pros: I got exactly what I paid for and it hasn't let me down. I was going to buy an after market cooler but even under a very heavy load it runs slightly cool within parameters.

Cons: No overclock, but for the price you can hardly complain

5 out of 5 eggsinsanely fast!

Pros: crazy fast, stays fairly cool with evo 212 heatsink, idles 30c under heavy gaming it gets as high as 54c I've never seen it get higher than that, and my gpu being underneath it is the number one thing that makes it even get that high.. perfect for a beastly budget build. paired with my SSD this boots windows 8.1 in 5 seconds. FIVE SECONDS from power button to browsing the web or playing a game, that's fast..

Cons: an i7 4790 would be a lot nicer and somewhat more future proof, kind of wish I would've opted for the i7 after getting a taste of these new intel cpus they're very impressive for the price. you cant overclock this one, but I don't see any reason to other than bragging rights

5 out of 5 eggsAs good as a "K"?

Pros: Runs any game I throw at it with no problem. I have a dual monitor setup as well as a HD TV. I can game, watch netflix, have multiple tabs in Chrome, use Mumble and have other background programs running without a hiccup. Stays cool at 42c under load on h100i.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: Saved the extra $30 from getting the "K" part and have no regrets.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Incredible proc at a great price. Purchased to replace an i7-2600 and fits the bill very nicely. Used in a m-itx build and temps are good and stable even with the stock heatsink/fan although you can hear it humming along at anything but a light load. Never seen temps above 156F even on a stress test.

Cons: I haven't really seen any as of yet.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this as an afterthought when the i3 I purchased didn't quite fit the bill for the desktop/light gaming rig I built. Was amazed to see temps just slightly higher for the difference in thermal power between the two. If you aren't overclocking this is an exceptional chip.
