5 out of 5 eggsIntel Core i3-4150

Pros: More than adequate for general use and most mid-range games (when paired with a decent graphics card). No problem simultaneously watching a movie, browsing the web, and using a word processor or spread sheet program. Paired with an SSD for booting and games and it performs impressively for the money.

Cons: Newegg misrepresents this processor as having Turbo Boost but it has no such feature. Other than that - no cons.

Other Thoughts: This processor really is great for everything most people would ever throw at it. Don't waste your money on aftermarket cooling because the provided flimsy fan keeps it very cool unless pushed to the max. Still, trying to test the limits of this mini-beast, I couldn't get the CPU temp over 60 C simultaneously viewing three videos, playing WOW, and opening a half dozen other programs.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome little guy

Pros: It's pretty powerful for an i3. It's powerful for a cpu, man. I bought this for a budget lan system to play multiplayer games like TF2, L4D2, and DayZ. It can easily handle all those.
Low TDP.
I'm actually impressed.

Cons: Newer i3s are available now. But this is still very good.
Even so, anything more than this or the 4160 and you might as well get an i5 until the newer i3s drop in price.

Other Thoughts: I'm slightly jealous of the newer i3 models that have become available since I got this. The 4160, for example. But, for a portable lan system, this cpu provides a great cpu for the price.
I didn't use the stock cooler.

4 out of 5 eggsSolid performer, cannot overclock

Pros: - Power efficient for performance
- Hyper threading used in 75% of games (hitting 3-4 thread usage around 75% of the time)
- Overall very fast

Cons: - Locked. Nothing against buying this (buy it - buy it now), but I generally don't like Intel's stance the last few years about paying a premium to "fully enable" their hardware. Honestly though, this is fantastic performance for the price and TDP.

Other Thoughts: Haven't used this on air cooling, went straight to Corsair H55. Idles around 18 C and loads around 35 C on AIO water cooler. Given the low temp it stays at 3.8 GHz much of the time :)

5 out of 5 eggsi3 goodness

Pros: hyperthreading
low temp with stock fan
great bang for your buck

Cons: none so far

Other Thoughts: upgraded from a e8400 3.0ghz wolfdale, that cpu was a champ for 7 years. this i3 so far is working as intended, used for adobe suite and elder scrolls online. running ESO on 1900x1220 resolution, high settings, dual monitor with firefox etc. and the cpu is running at 50% load.

4 out of 5 eggsLittle engine that almost...

Pros: - Good price point for the amount of power you're getting.

- Paired with a R9 280, it will do very well with most games (see below)

Cons: - There is still something to be gained with a true quad core; the dual core with HT does take a hit in certain games (DA: Inquisition). That trend may continue; shortening my desire to run this chip.

- Stock cooling solution isn't terribly efficient, or terribly quiet.

Other Thoughts: I'm losing count of how many systems I've built, but it's the first time I've went with a 'budget' processor. Honestly, I'm impressed. Not floored. But impressed.

Runs World of Tanks and Minecraft well

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent CPU for budget gaming

Pros: Price, 4th Gen architecture, 2 x Cores-4 threds, 3.5 GHz speed, integrated GPU (not utilized due to dedicated GPU). Runs idle at 25-30

Cons: Absolutely none

Other Thoughts: Bought this cpu for my gaming computer. Couldn't be happier. After working in I.T. for almost 10 years and playing Computer games for 13, I've realized that most games today do not highly depend on the CPU in your gaming rig. That being said, you still need a fast cpu for specifcs that the game offloads from the GPU to the cpu, like texture streaming, and some AI and physics.

Most games and applications only use the most 2 threads of a cpu to run its code with the exception of photo and video editing, 3D rendering software and such.

With all of these points kept in mind, purchasing an I7 or I5 today is totally overkill, especially with the 4th generation of the Intel I series.

My gaming right went from (free parts given to me):

Intel Core 2 Duo 8400
8Gigs DDR 2 800MHZ
Invidia 440 GT
2 x Standard sata hdd's. One for OS and other for games and apps
HT Omega Clario Sound card

to

I3 4150
8Gigs DDR 3 1600
MSI Nvidia 650 TI
Intel 330 SSD (OS) and second standard HDD for data and games
HT Omega Clario sound card
MSI Mobo - 90$

THis computer Runs everything that I currently have in my Steam account perfectly. From Bioshock 1,2 and 3 to to GTA 4 to Strider, to Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon and both Sniper Elite Zombie edition.

Everything runs smooth and at 60fps with most settings maxed out at 1080p with the exception of some not noticeable advanced setting disabled.

If you're looking for a cpu for your next build, spending the extra money on anything else is just wasting money or if prepping to the games of tomorrow.

Total amount spent with the exception of a case and sound card and second hard drive...less than $700. this also includes a Silent power supply. I like to use my computer for listening to music that is hooked into my external amp and speakers. I hate fan noise.

Ps the fan is whisper quiet. If you have a loud fan it may be the case fan runhing high due to a mobo setting. I hear nothing now.

3 out of 5 eggsLOUDest Fan EVER!

Pros: CPU is fine. Works as expected, installed easily.

Cons: CPU Cooler is ridiculously loud. I understand its the stock fan, but it sounds like the bearing are toast right out of the box.

Other Thoughts: I like the CPU/MOBO combo, but I am bummed that I have to go and buy a new CPU cooler the first day!

4 out of 5 eggsIntel Core i3-4150

Pros: Solid CPU, can handle moderate gaming. Very good for a home computer or budget build. Paired this CPU with an r9 280.

Cons: Graphic intense games like to heat up the CPU to the point of shut down (75*Celcius+), bought a new heat sink and hopefully that will help keep it a little cooler once I get it on. (Over heated on Payday 2 and shut down)

Other Thoughts: If you're looking to game heavily, look into an i5, at least. Especially if you're wanting to play minecraft.

(I also have 3 fans in my case not including the heat sink, my airflow isn't the issue either.)
