The Dua Core Intel Xeon 5100 series processors empower next-generation platforms with the capabilities to get more done on fewer systems, optimize data center density and improve business continuity. Intel Xeon 5100 series processors redefine what DP (Dual-Processor) servers and workstations should deliver to help business be more efficient, dependable and agile. The Dual Core Intel Xeon 5100 series, with 64-bit computing and greater power efficiency, is ideal for intense computing environments, business-critical applications and high-end workstations.

Powered by the Intel 5000 series chipset family and Fully Buffered DIMM (FBDIMM) technology, new dual-core Intel Xeon 5100 series-based platforms are expected to deliver up to 3 times the performance and over 3 times the performance/watt of previous-generation single core Intel Xeon Processors. Featuring a 1066MHz FSB, 4MB shared L2 cache and an operating speed of 1.86GHz with a TDP of only 65w, the dual-core Intel Xeon 5120 processor delivers impressive performance, reliability and versatility, and will help drive low total cost of ownership.

  • newegg Dual-core Processing with 4MB Shared L2 Cache The Intel Xeon 5120 processor features two complete processor cores in one physical package. Significant performance headroom, especially for multi-threaded applications, helps boost system utilization through virtualization and application responsiveness. Its 4MB shared L2 cache increases efficiency of L2 cache-to-processor data transfer, maximizes main memory to processor bandwidth and reduces latency.
  • newegg Intel Virtualization Technology (Intel VT) Intel Virtualization Tehcnology makes it even easier to increase server utilization in your data center by consolidating more applications while improving data center reliability and adding robustness to virtualized systems.
  • newegg Intel Extended Memory 64 Technology (Intel EM64T) Enhances next-generation IA-32 platforms with 64-bit addressability and related instructions, allowing flexibility for 64-bit and 32-bit applications and operating systems.
  • newegg Demand-Based Switching (DBS) with Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology (EIST) EIST allows the system to dynamically adjust processor voltage and core frequency to reduce average system power consumption and potentially improves system acoustics.
  • newegg Execute Disable Bit (EDB) Intel's Execute Disable Bit function can prevent certain classes of malicious "buffer overflow" attacks when combined with a supporting operating system. Execute Disable Bit allows the processor to classify areas in memory by where application code can execute and where it cannot. When a malicious worm attempts to insert code in the buffer, the processor disables code execution, preventing damage or worm propagation.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat processor!

Pros: Great processor, never gets bogged down, handles everything I can throw at it very quickly.

Cons: Absolutely none that I can see...

Other Thoughts: Running in a workstation at stock speeds with Nvidia Quadro FX 3500 and 2 gigs ddr2 667 ram. This thing flies, works wonderfully when rendering Softimage and Bryce animations/scenes.

5 out of 5 eggsXeon 5120, The Overclocker's Choice!

Pros: 1) Overclockable.
2) Low Heat.

Cons: 1) None

Other Thoughts: In stock form this CPU easily outperformed my Dual Xeon 3.0Ghz Irwindale system using Sisoft Sandra, with a single CPU. I understand this comparison is not scientific, but the performance cannot be denied. The CPU ran remarkably cool and quiet using the stock Intel cooler set to "Workstation Mode" in the bios.

However, I said "in stock form". The reason I say this is because the user by the name of XeonTux at a popular website found a mod to make this CPU easily run like a 5140, or 2.33Ghz! The mode is called a BSEL Mod. Simply using a small piece of masking tape I made my CPU boot as a 2.33Ghz/1333FSB unit! I have tested this on my system and everything is running stable on a Supermicro X7DAL-E. Additionally this is supposed to work on Intel 5000PSL motherboards as well.

If you are looking to jump into high speed computing, the next generation of Xeon technology can now be in your hands at a fraction of the cost of comparable AMD products.
