The Quad Core Xeon E5310 processor delivers impressive performance per watt numbers and up to 4 times the performance of earlier generation single-core processors. A massive 8MB increases efficiency of L2 cache-to-core data transfers, maximizing main memory to processor bandwidth and reducing latency,up to 4MB of L2 cache can be allocated to one core. The 64bit cores are designed to handle all of today's x86 32bit software with ease and effortlessly migrate to 64bit software.

Fully buffered DIMM technology allows up to 21GB/s which is 3 times the bandwidth of previous technology. You also get 4 times the memory capacity of up to 64GB. Intel Acceleration Technology helps with this and cuts CPU overhead by up to 40% which lets it handle other tasks more efficiently.

You also get Intel Virtualization Technology hardware enhancements that support software based virtualization. It works with VMware, Virtual PC and XenSource and products from an increasing number of software vendors. This combined with the processor’s great power efficiencies let you run virtual environments on 1U and blade systems fewer cooling challenges which gives you maximum power and services per square foot.

  • newegg Quad-core Processing with 8MB L2 Cache The Intel Xeon E5310 processor features four complete processor cores in one physical package. Significant performance headroom, especially for multi-threaded applications, helps boost system utilization through virtualization and application responsiveness. Its 8MB (2 x 4MB) L2 cache increases efficiency of L2 cache-to-processor data transfer, maximizes main memory to processor bandwidth and reduces latency.
  • newegg Supports Intel Virtualization Technology (Intel VT) With Intel VT, one hardware platform functions as multiple “virtual” platforms. For business, Intel VT offers improved manageability, limiting downtime and maintaining worker productivity by isolating computing activities into separate partitions. In the home, Intel VT allows creating unique user environments for multiple family members using the same platform simultaneously.
  • newegg Intel Extended Memory 64 Technology (Intel EM64T) Enhances next-generation IA-32 platforms with 64-bit addressability and related instructions, allowing flexibility for both 64-bit and 32-bit applications and operating systems.
  • newegg Execute Disable Bit (EDB) Intel's Execute Disable Bit function can prevent certain classes of malicious "buffer overflow" attacks when combined with a supporting operating system. Execute Disable Bit allows the processor to classify areas in memory where application code can execute and where it cannot. When a malicious worm attempts to insert code in the buffer, the processor disables code execution, preventing damage or worm propagation.
  • newegg Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology (EIST) EIST allows the system to dynamically adjust processor voltage and core frequency to decrease average power consumption and average heat production. Combined with existing power saving features, EIST may provide an excellent balance between providing power when you need it and conserving power when you don’t.

5 out of 5 eggsWOW

Pros: I have a Dell with 2 CPU slots. It originally came with one of these quad core processors in it and I thought it was fast, until I put the second CPU in there. Wow...this is by far the fastest desktop/mini-server I have owned and worked with. I am running Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition 64-Bit so that I can see all 8 cores and 8G of RAM. I haven't even put the second set of 4G of RAM in there yet, yet it boots in under 5 seconds and shuts down lightning fast as well. Running any software (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.) is so fast, I barely have time to blink after clicking the mouse and it is ready.

Cons: Absolutely none

Other Thoughts: I bought the dual chip slot server with only 1 chip in it, expecting to be able to upgrade it when the chip prices went down. As expected, as Intel comes out with new chips, the old ones get lower and lower prices. Newegg is a great place to buy the upgrade parts.

This particular machine will be used to allow me to have multiple Virtual machines running (Windows host, Linux , FreeBSD, and Solaris guests). There is no better way to learn and keep my skills up to remain employable.

5 out of 5 eggsPhenomenal Cosmic POWAH!

Pros: Low power consumption, great performance.

Cons: That I couldn't get E5450's for the same price?

Other Thoughts: Have a pair of these in a server. It just rocks hiney (since I can't say the three-letter variant).

5 out of 5 eggsGood Processor

Pros: Very nice processor model with lots of cache and decent speed and nice price. I've been very impressed with the performance with this chip. I own a Dell Poweredge 1950 with one of these installed and 6GB of RAM. My system has successfully served up to about 100,000 page hits in 30 minutes with this configuration + MSSQL Server/ASP.NET backed pages without slowing too much. I recently bought a second one of these chips to give me 8 total cores (the more the merryer :-)

Cons: uses two woodcrest chips on the same wafer. this isn't quite as good as a true quad core chip, which would operate faster due to getting to share all 8MB of cache, rather than the 2x4GB. Also there is speed advantages in communication between the cores if it is a "real" quad core

Other Thoughts: Just F.Y.I. If you have a Dell Poweredge 1950 the heatsink that comes with this processor does not fit (whether with the fan on top or with just the heatsink). The heatsink is about 1/4 an inch two big on all sides (it's square). So if you get this processor you have to purchase a heatsink seperately. The processor itself worked fine for me but I had to shell out an additional $35 for a new heatsink, which was dissapointing.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Product

Pros: They're quick and they worked well right out of the box with our Tyan 1U barebones.

Cons: None really other than they are only 1.6 GHz but that's what we could afford.

5 out of 5 eggsIncreadable

Pros: These chips are amazing. Low wattage, low heat, and awesome speed. Add to that they are not exactly expensive. 2 of these coupled with 4 gigs of ram, and any server is in heaven. If your looking for an inexpensive server chip, look no futher.

Cons: None!

Other Thoughts: Using 2 of these with VMWare server allows for some serious virtualization with little degredation in speed. Simply amazing

5 out of 5 eggsProtools rig update

Pros: A quick update... Having the cores run at 1.6 just wasn't good enough, so I overclocked them by placing a little spec of electrical tape on pad G30. Now both chips run at 2.0 with only a slight bump in temperature under full load.

Cons: So far so good! The system takes everything we throw at it and just works with plenty of power to spare.

Other Thoughts: The ENERMAX Uber Chakra ECA5001B case with the 250mm fan is freakin' awesome and sooooo quiet!

5 out of 5 eggsProTools on Windows got you down? How about using 8 cores!!!

Pros: After a year of waiting for our indy labels to help us with the studio (yeah, we went through TWO recording contacts!!), we decided to record the darn thing ourselves. We hired a local producer/engineer we trusted. We very quickly realized that we needed to upgrade our M-Powered ProTools rig when we found ourselves heavily CPU bound when doing minimalist mixing (AMD 3000+ system/2GB/blah).

Of all the upgrade paths available, building an 8-core system seemed to make the most sense since we could not afford the ‘proper’ MAC+TDM hardware for processing support. By using the low end quad CPUs, we bought our way into the 8 cores rather cheaply – and most importantly - QUIETLY. If we need to upgrade, we still have a CPU upgrade path!!!

After about 6 hours of work getting all the pieces put together, setting up the OS and installing the software, the resulting system is way better expected. This thing chews through audio processing tasks like nothing we've ever seen.

Cons: No cons... The resulting server is powerful, very quiet (much more quiet than expected) and very inexpensive for what you get!!!

Other Thoughts: The system consists of:
(2) This system consists of:

(1) ENERMAX Uber Chakra ECA5001B case (for SSI EEB motherboard support)
(1) ASUS DSBV-D Dual Socket 771 motherboard
(2) Intel Xeon E5310 Clovertown 1.6GHz processors
(2) Thermaltake CL-P0303 2U CPU Coolers (29.1dBA!!!)
(2) Patriot 2GB 240-Pin DDR2 FB-DIMM
(1) XFX PVT73GU1D4 GeForce 7600GT 256MB fanless video card
(misc existing hardare) 650 watt power supply, 2 SATA drives (250GB OS, 500GB audio), SATA CD/DVD burner, Dell UltraSharp 2407WFP 24" widescreen LCD,
Planar PL1700 17" LCD

In order to install Windows XP, I need to:
(1) Flash the BIOS (so the BIOS manages my SATA drives properly)
(2) Install XP using an installation disk with SP2 integrated. The base XP installation disk did not have the drivers for the newer PCI bus technology
