The Quad Core Xeon E5520 processor delivers impressive performance -- up to 4 times that of earlier generation single-core processors. Each of the cores has an L1 and L2 cache, and an additional 8MB of shared L3 cache; this lets the Xeon E5520 handle heavy loads and large data sets. The 64bit cores are designed to handle all of today’s x86 32bit software with ease, and can effortlessly migrate to 64bit software.

You also get Intel Virtualization Technology hardware enhancements that support software-based virtualization. It works with VMware, Virtual PC and XenSource, as well as virtualization products from an increasing number of software vendors. Virtualization Technology combined with the processor’s great power efficiency lets you run virtual environments on blade systems with fewer cooling challenges. The end result is maximum power and service per square foot of server space.

  • newegg Quad-core Processing with Enhanced Smart Cache The Intel Xeon E5520 processor features four complete processor cores in one physical package. Significant performance headroom, especially for multi-threaded applications, helps boost system utilization through virtualization and application responsiveness. Its 4 x 256KB L2 cache and 8MB shared L3 cache with Enhanced Smart Cache technology minimize data latency and improves performance.
  • newegg Supports Intel Virtualization Technology (Intel VT) With Intel VT, one hardware platform functions as multiple "virtual" platforms. For business, Intel VT offers improved manageability, limiting downtime and maintaining worker productivity by isolating computing activities into separate partitions. In the home, Intel VT allows for the creation of unique user environments for different family members who are using the same platform simultaneously.
  • newegg Intel Extended Memory 64 Technology (Intel EM64T) Enhances next-generation IA-32 platforms with 64-bit addressability and related instructions, allowing flexibility for both 64-bit and 32-bit applications and operating systems.
  • newegg Execute Disable Bit (EDB) Intel's Execute Disable Bit function can prevent certain classes of malicious "buffer overflow" attacks when combined with a supporting operating system. Execute Disable Bit allows the processor to classify areas of the memory where application code can execute and where it cannot. When a malicious worm attempts to insert code into the buffer, the processor disables code execution, preventing damage or worm propagation.
  • newegg Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology (EIST) EIST allows the system to dynamically adjust processor voltage and core frequency to decrease the average power consumption and heat production. Combined with existing power saving features, EIST provides an excellent balance between supplying power when you need it and conserving power when you don’t.

4 out of 5 eggsXeon E5520 Nehalem Review

5 out of 5 eggsMy Server CPU of choice

Pros: Still a bit expensive, given the cost of an i7 with similar benchmark results, but this model has the features I want. Perfect for Hyper-V.

Cons: Intel's pricing structure.

Other Thoughts: Running this on Supermicro MBD-X8DTi-LN4F-O, and various Tyan S70XX boards. Load each with 3x4 or 6x4GB sticks, add an Adaptec 5805 with some WD RE3 or RE4 disks and you're good to go.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat CPU

Pros: Best CPU price per Hz in Xeon class, runs fast and crunches everything you can throw at it.

Cons: This processor limits system memory to 1066 speeds. No heat sink with CPU?

Other Thoughts: Running 2 X CPU /12 Gig RDIMM / 4 SSD / LSI Raid / ESXI 4
WOW it's stupid fast

5 out of 5 eggsGood enough, twice over

Pros: I bought two, and both work. My dual-CPU motherboard shows a Windows7 Experience Index of 7.7 for CPUs, and 7.7 for RAM. I'm not sure what it means, but I guess it's good, given that the index has a maximum of 7.9.

Cons: I suppose they could be faster. In theory I could t upgrade when prices on the higher-clocked 55xx Xeons eventually go down. Of course, I will want to do a whole new build by then.

Other Thoughts: I could afford the faster 55xx Xeons, if I thought I would see enough benefit to justify the cost.
