The Intel Xeon X3440 quad core processor is ideal for small business owners looking for ways to grow business, manage operations more effectively and efficiently, and protect and secure one of their most important assets — information. Based on Intel’s Core micro architecture it is designed to deliver better performance on multiple application types and user environments at a substantially reduced power envelope.

You also get Intel Virtualization Technology hardware enhancements that support software-based virtualization. It works with VMware, Virtual PC and XenSource and products from an increasing number of software vendors. Virtualization combined with multiple cores gives you maximum power and performance per square foot.

  • newegg Quad-core Processing with 8MB Smart Cache The Intel Xeon X3440 processor features four complete processor cores in one physical package. Significant performance headroom, especially for multi-threaded applications, helps boost system utilization through virtualization and application responsiveness. The large on-die 8MB shared L3 cache minimizes data latency, helping improve performance and power efficiency.
  • newegg Supports Intel Virtualization Technology (Intel VT) With Intel VT, one hardware platform functions as multiple “virtual” platforms. For business, Intel VT offers improved manageability, limiting downtime and maintaining worker productivity by isolating computing activities into separate partitions. In the home, Intel VT allows creating unique user environments for multiple family members using the same platform simultaneously.
  • newegg Memory Flexibility With an integrated high speed, 1333 MHz dual-channel DDR3 memory controller, the Intel Xeon X3440 supports up to 16GB of memory with DDR3 Unbuffered DIMMs or 32GB of memory with DDR3 Registered DIMMs.
  • newegg Turbo Boost technology Intel Turbo Boost technology maximizes speed for demanding applications, dynamically accelerating performance to match your workload – more performance when you need it the most.
  • newegg Hyper-Threading Technology The Intel Xeon X3440 supports Intel Hyper-Threading technology which enables simultaneous multi-threading within each processor core, resulting in more efficient use of processor resources, higher processing throughput, and improved performance on the multi-threaded software of today and tomorrow.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Fast, stable, easy-to-find

Cons: Stock fan belongs on an i3. However, if you need a cpu like this then you probably have an after-market one in mind.

Other Thoughts: I went from an i3 530 to this. Admittedly, the i3 was much easier to overclock with it's 22x multiplier. The xeon does 19x (20 with turbo boost) so you'll want to make sure your ram can handle the clock speed that you want. Mine does 3.2 under a zalman heatsink, which is much much quieter than my 3.5ghz i3 ever was. I was able to pair the old i3 with the xeon's fan and build a micro-ATX media box.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat in place of an i7-860!

Pros: Got this processor to grab hyper-threading on the 1156 socket without having to spend all the extra $$$ for an i7-860/870. Dropped it into a MSI P55-GD65 board with no issues, stock BIO's on board recognized the CPU.

Overclocked the Xeon 3440 to 3.8Ghz(201x19) runs great! Temps are awesome(63c hottest core) under a Zalman CNPS10x Flex with 2x CM sickleflow 69CFM fans.

Cons: Took more voltage that i expected to hit 3.8Ghz, But this was actually my first overclock on the 1156 socket so i guess its not surprising that it took more voltage than my i7-930? Not really a con, just expected the higher quality Xeon processor to overclock better. Regardless, it works great!

Other Thoughts: At the time of purchase it was only $230, or $20 more than a i5-760, but $50 cheaper than an i7-870. Sweet deal if you ask me!

5 out of 5 eggsNice CPU

Pros: CPU is a great replacement for my old server. Even with more hardware in the new server, it is using less power!

Cons: Wasn't buy one, get one free!

Other Thoughts: I am using this for a win2k8r2 box at home.
The build list:
SUPERMICRO MBD-X8SIL-F-O
KVR1333D3E9S/4G qty 2
Xeon X3440

Solid performer!

5 out of 5 eggsMe likey

Pros: 4 cores, 8 threads. It's a xeon. Built to take a beating. Huge upgrade from my 3.06 GHz P4 system.

Cons: None whatsoever

Other Thoughts: I'm using this in a p55 desktop motherboard for a custom built digital audio workstation.

5 out of 5 eggsGet an aftermarket hsf

Pros: It really can handle quite a lot and for the price it wasnt really a hard choice

Cons: This thing gets really hot, really fast with the stock heatsink and fan. If you want a rig that can render games or use as a render node for "certain" software, be sure you get something more efficient than the usual stock heatsinks and fans.

4 out of 5 eggsSolid performance, solid price.

Pros: Installed in a p55 motherboard running OS X. All 8 threads are detected and used. Compiling software is fast on this machine(Using llvm, clang, macports), and threading is important for this! Best quad core bang for buck you can get in the intel range.

Cons: The stock heatsink and fan really could be better. This card has enormous overclocking potential.

5 out of 5 eggsWow..what a deal!!

Pros: Just as fast, if not faster than some of Intel's comparable desktop processors.
Hyper-threading, without breaking the bank.
8 threads, without breaking the bank.
Works with my Intel DP55KG without any issues.
Comparable desktop perfomance to the i7-860 when it comes to day to day multitasking and computing.
It's a server processor (made to take a licking).

Cons: Are you kidding?

Other Thoughts: You can't beat the X3440 server processor for the price/performance/feature ratio. It just may be one of Intel's best finds. I suspect that when more people find out that the x3400 series can be used on regular mobo's, as well as server mobo's, then more will jump on the bandwagon. I don't overclock my processors, but for everyday multitasking and computing, the X3440 works just as well as my old friend, the i7-860. The i5-750, which I upgraded from, was very good, however the X3440 is faster and more responsive, in my opinion. That's probably because it's closer to the i7-860, than the i5-750. I can truly see and feel the difference. Now, when it comes to benchmarks, total performance and which processor is the clear winner, I don't know. I don't really care. I do know this though, the X3440 is a great deal and is no slouch. The price/performance/feature ratio is unheard of. If I ever buy another processor down the road, I'll be sure to look at Xeon's that use the same socket.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent CPU

Pros: Overclocked to 3.4 Ghz immediatly with the stock cooler. Iv taken it to 3.6 Ghz before my RAM started getting unstable. With the right timing and cooling, I'm sure it could go even faster.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I maxed Crysis with it on my 22'' monitor. If your looking for a CPU to game with, there is not much reason to go higher. This, 4gb of RAM, and a Radeon 4870 has me maxed out on everything I can throw at it.
