The Intel Xeon processor 3600 series delivers intelligent and scalable performance, automated energy efficiency, professional visualization and reliability for single-processor workstations to handle the ever-changing demands of a virtualized and consolidated computing environment. With advanced features like ECC DDR3 1333MHz memory supporting, Intel Turbo Boost Technology and Intel Hyper-Threading Technology, the Intel Xeon processor 3600 series is ideal for professional digital content creation, engineering, and financial market where more efficient workstation performance is needed.

  • newegg ECC Memory Support With the integrated DDR3 memory controller, the Intel Xeon W3680 processor enables three channels of ECC DDR3 memory up to 1333MHz, resulting in up to 32 GB/sec memory bandwidth.
  • newegg Intel Virtualization Technology (VT-x) Increasing manageability, security, and flexibility in IT environments, virtualization technologies like hardware-assisted Intel Virtualization Technology (Intel VT) combined with software-based virtualization solutions provide maximum system utilization by consolidating multiple environments into a single server or PC. By abstracting the software away from the underlying hardware, a world of new usage models opens up that reduce costs, increase management efficiency, strengthen security, while making your computing infrastructure more resilient in the event of a disaster.
  • newegg Intel Turbo Boost Technology Intel Turbo Boost technology automatically allows processor cores to run faster than the base operating frequency if it's operating below power, current, and temperature specification limits, maximizing speed for demanding applications, dynamically accelerating performance to match your workload-more performance when you need it the most.
  • newegg Hyper-Threading Technology (HT Technology) Intel Hyper-Threading Technology delivers thread-level parallelism on each processor resulting in more efficient use of processor resources—higher processing throughput—and improved performance on the multi-threaded software of today and tomorrow.
  • newegg Intel Trusted Execution Technology (Intel TXT) Intel Trusted Execution Technology for safer computing is a versatile set of hardware extensions to Intel processors and chipsets that enhance the digital office platform with security capabilities such as measured launch and protected execution. Intel Trusted Execution Technology provides hardware-based mechanisms that help protect against software-based attacks and protects the confidentiality and integrity of data stored or created on the client PC. It does this by enabling an environment where applications can run within their own space, protected from all other software on the system. These capabilities provide the protection mechanisms, rooted in hardware, that are necessary to provide trust in the application's execution environment. In turn, this can help to protect vital data and processes from being compromised by malicious software running on the platform.
  • newegg Execute Disable Bit (EDB) Intel's Execute Disable Bit function can prevent certain classes of malicious "buffer overflow" attacks when combined with a supporting operating system. Execute Disable Bit allows the processor to classify areas in memory where application code can execute and where it cannot. When a malicious worm attempts to insert code in the buffer, the processor disables code execution, preventing damage or worm propagation.

5 out of 5 eggsFantasic processor

Pros: * Comparable to a core i7 980X
* Overclocks like a sandy bridge
* Unlocked core multiplier
* 6 cores, 12 threads, 12 MB of L3
* Stable at 4.2 ghz with air cooling and no changes to voltage

Cons: * Memory bandwidth with non-ECC ram is closer to 20 gb/s
* Main temperature sensor on the chip (the Tpackage sensor) gets stuck at times, I'm not sure if this is a processor or mainboard issue. I worked around this by using a 3-pin fan on my heatsink, so fan speed doesn't change as a function of this read-out.
* Had to bump the memory voltage up a little to support DDR-1600 ram.

Other Thoughts: This is a very nice processor. It is pretty much the same thing as an i7-980x, with a different memory controller. When I bought mine, it was about 1/2 this price of the 980X, which I jumped on.

This processor won't work in a lot of X58 boards, you have to check mainboard docs to see if they support the 3500/3600 xeons. Usually those boards have the 'workstation' moniker.

I've found over time that I've been able to bump the core multiplier a few more notches after breaking in the system YMMV.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Product

Pros: Works Great, Probably won't upgrade again for some time

Cons: The only con I discovered when I had a motherboard problem is finding a motheboard that supports these.
Only a few Asus boards and several Gigabyte board seem to support these processors. I ended up buying a couple of backup motherboard in case I have another motherboard failure. I think the processor is, for the most part, worth it.

5 out of 5 eggsWhy did I doubt it?

Cons: price

Other Thoughts: Love the raw power nice upgrade from i7 920 otherwise same rig

5 out of 5 eggsXeon W3680

Pros: I recommended the Xeon W3680 processor for a client workstation upgrade from my Intel i7-950 + Asus P6T7 previous build (programmer wanted a mega-compiling, super workstation) . BIOS upgrade (0601 or better) was all that was necessary and client is extremely happy.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: Eventually swapped MoBo with an upgraded version (2.0) from Asus (great support). Processor and board are running cooler (even at high-stress benchmarking) than the i7-950. Considering cost, I'm recommending a new build rather than further upgrades (next generation CPU + SSD minimum)

5 out of 5 eggsBam!

Pros: -6 core 12 threads
-Unlocked Core
-Runs cooler than my old i7 920 (same rig)
-Does come with a heatsink (I'm a verified owner, take that into account when reading other reviews)
-Makes Mine-Sweeper super smooth, high FPS in Solitare.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: This is the modest price since it is not compatible with dual socket server motherboards. You need the 5000 series for that. I haven't tried above stock 3.33 but it ran no higher than 66C after hours of 100% stress. Not using OEM cooling.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat CPU don't use overnight shipping

Pros: Speed + Stability

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Fantastic processor, if only we got it when we ordered it. Paid for overnight shipping, did not receive it. Don't waste your time or money on Overnight shipping, Newegg uses UPS Saver, which stinks. Go with 2 day, you'll be much better off - same delivery, less $$ Newegg would not refund me either -

5 out of 5 eggsGood

Pros: Used it in an "application optimized" server build with a SuperMicro X8STI-F. Six cores is just right and clock speed is very important for the app bundle running on this server (and OC is out of the question). Everything runs great.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: Single proc only, but priced about right given that fact.

I used a Kingston ECC 3x4G RAM kit (12G total, 3 slots still open on mobo) as per the recommendation selector on Kingston's site for this mobo and it works fine.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat CPU

Pros: Very fast
Turbo mode great for single threaded apps like coreldraw
Runs very cool even under full load

Cons: None other than price

Other Thoughts: Fastest CPU to date - and quite a value compared to the 5600 series if you don't need more than 6 cores/12 threads (amazing the cpu power in one chip now!)

5 out of 5 eggsThis Processor Rocks !!!

Pros: Lightening Fast and highly overclockable. On H20 I have run this processor at 4.7 GHz at 1.55 V core. Using ASUS P6T7 Supercomputer m/b and it seems to like step 23 clk 202-206. Must have fast memory ( I am using Gskill Trident at 6-7-6-18.

Cons: Pricey

Other Thoughts: Just as flexible as a 980x -- but requires less voltage and clocks like crazy !!!
