Built with Intel’s new 32nm microarchitecture, the Intel Xeon processor 5600 series automatically regulates power consumption and intelligently adjusts server performance according to application demand, maximizing both energy cost savings and performance. Featuring Intel Intelligent Power Technology, it reduces energy cost over single core servers by automatically shifting the CPU and memory into the lowest available power state, while Intel Turbo Boost Technology intelligently adjusts performance to application needs.

In addition, built-in hardware-assisted virtualization technology with Intel Virtualization Technology FlexMigration (Intel VT FlexMigration) gives you the power and flexibility to virtualize different generations of Intel Xeon processor-based servers within the same virtualization pool, giving you the ability to migrate workloads to fewer servers at night to save energy.

If you’re looking for an energy-efficient processor that gives you the power and flexibility you need, upgrade to the Intel Xeon processor 5600 series.

  • newegg Intel Turbo Boost Technology Intel Turbo Boost technology automatically allows processor cores to run faster than the base operating frequency if it's operating below power, current, and temperature specification limits, maximizing speed for demanding applications, dynamically accelerating performance to match your workload-more performance when you need it the most.
  • newegg Intel Hyper-Threading Technology (HT Technology) Intel Hyper-Threading Technology delivers thread-level parallelism on each processor resulting in more efficient use of processor resources—higher processing throughput—and improved performance on the multi-threaded software of today and tomorrow.
  • newegg Intel Virtualization Technology (VT-x) Increasing manageability, security, and flexibility in IT environments, virtualization technologies like hardware-assisted Intel Virtualization Technology (Intel VT) combined with software-based virtualization solutions provide maximum system utilization by consolidating multiple environments into a single server or PC. By abstracting the software away from the underlying hardware, a world of new usage models opens up that reduce costs, increase management efficiency, strengthen security, while making your computing infrastructure more resilient in the event of a disaster.
  • newegg Intel Trusted Execution Technology Intel Trusted Execution Technology for safer computing is a versatile set of hardware extensions to Intel processors and chipsets that enhance the digital office platform with security capabilities such as measured launch and protected execution. Intel Trusted Execution Technology provides hardware-based mechanisms that help protect against software-based attacks and protects the confidentiality and integrity of data stored or created on the client PC. It does this by enabling an environment where applications can run within their own space, protected from all other software on the system. These capabilities provide the protection mechanisms, rooted in hardware, that are necessary to provide trust in the application's execution environment. In turn, this can help to protect vital data and processes from being compromised by malicious software running on the platform.
  • newegg Intel 64 Architecture Intel 64 architecture delivers 64-bit computing on server, workstation, desktop and mobile platforms when combined with supporting software.¹ Intel 64 architecture improves performance by allowing systems to address more than 4 GB of both virtual and physical memory.
  • newegg Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology is an advanced means of enabling very high performance while also meeting the power-conservation needs of mobile systems. Conventional Intel SpeedStep Technology switches both voltage and frequency in tandem between high and low levels in response to processor load.

5 out of 5 eggsDual Xeon Six-Core

Pros: I bought 2 of these back in November 2011. The price hasn't budged much and the stability of my dual xeon ESXi5 machine has been terrific. No problems, super fast even when running upwards of 20 VMs at the same.

Cons: Expensive

Other Thoughts: I thought about getting a quad AMD server setup instead, but I'm so glad I got the intel. Not that there would be anything wrong with AMD, but this one surely didn't let me down in any aspect. Ignorance is bliss!

5 out of 5 eggsOver a Year later

Pros: Still running great, Was able to run this on a Asus P6X58D Prem
with a BCLK of 221Mhz That's almost 4.2Ghz 4195 actual at a vcore
of only 1.275v 24/7 load stable Folding for the past year.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: Wish I had two or more of these. Can't go wrong for the price.
Works on SR2 with a E5620, but BCLK is some what limited
in the range of 200 to 211Mhz depending on MB, could be less
in your case.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat chip

Pros: These are not the top-end chips but here is what they are, real fast for the cash, they 'out of the box' self-overclock to 2.9Ghz when under load, are super power efficient for Xeons, run cool when idle but can run well over 60c under load. (Intel lists the max temp at 72c or more if I remember correctly).

They're power house chips that don't suck the energy out of your pocket.

Cons: None yet.

Other Thoughts: No heatsink included, as with most Xeons.

I run a pair of these on my eVGA Classified SR-2.

5 out of 5 eggsUse it for Rendering in Lightwave3D

Pros: I finally decided to start taking my animation skills seriously, and built a system to speed up rendering in Lightwave3D. After a lot of research, I decided on this processor for the best performance/price.

This is by far one of the fastest processors I've seen. I have a dual CPU motherboard, and have yet to buy another of these.

Still, just one of these is a little over twice as fast as my previous Core2Quad 9450 2.66GHz CPU (note the 9450 has 12MB L2 cache).

Cons: If I dropped an egg over this, it would only hurt the product, not NewEgg.

When I received the processor through UPS, it arrived in an envelope, instead of a box. I'm lucky this processor has no pins that could get bent, or a heatsink/fan that could have been destroyed.

The processor was fine, thankfully. But, the retail box that it contained was crushed. This is an expensive piece of equipment, at least to me it is. I ask myself, who on Earth would put something that valuable into a cheap envelope that offers little to no protection?

Other Thoughts: I use this with an ASUS z8na-d6 motherboard, and was able to slightly overclock the CPU just using the CPU multiplier. I'm not much into overclocking, but I've seen this combination of CPU and Motherboard result in 2.93 GHz operation. I would get the EVGA SR-2 if I could afford it.

NewEgg needs to have a seperate rating system for shipping. Too many people are unhappy about shipping, and give low ratings to good products.

5 out of 5 eggsBest Bang For The Buck

Pros: Worked first time every time. Rock solid chip, paid 30 bucks more but prices ebb and flow and after 24 years in the computer business one comes to expect that sort of thing, to all the price wieners, get over it.

Cons: NONE!!! got all the parts for my computer from Newegg, don't shop anywhere else.

Other Thoughts: Thermaltake Xaser VI case
Evga SR-2 Motherboard
2 e5645 Xeons
2 H60 coolers
12 gigs Patriot DDR3 1333 XMP ram
2 GTS 450 Galaxy Video Cards
Soundblaster X-fi Fatal1ty Titanium Sound card
4 HP hdmi 22" monitors

1 out of 5 eggsGotta ding the Egg on this one

Pros: Not much about this order. Last time I ordered processors from the egg, they came in a bubble wrap envelope & both boxes looked like someone had sat on them. The 5650's worked though. We'll see about this time... If the order ever gets here.

Cons: Delivery ... or Lack of so far. Ordered 2 of these as part of a server build & thought everything was fine until I received an e-mail saying they were out of stock & order was voided with refund to follow in 3 or 4 days. When I went online they showed no stocking issues, so when I called I was told that the particular warehouse THEY chose to send from was out of stock but other warehouses had plenty of chips in stock. Then I was told that I had to re-order since they couldn't redirect shipping even though the card was charged & approved. To add insult to injury, when I did re-order, they charged me an extra 69.71 since they voided my COMBO discount & the sales tax it saved.

Other Thoughts: These processors were part of a 6k+ order & due to the egg's lack of logistics capabilities (being kind ... since the alternative explanation is they just wanted to ding me for the combo discount or push me into a more expensive processor), I'm stuck with a $5,300 paperweight for most of next week since they won't be shipping till Monday despite rush processing. Not happy at all.
