Built with Intel’s new 32nm microarchitecture, the Intel Xeon processor 5600 series automatically regulates power consumption and intelligently adjusts server performance according to application demand, maximizing both energy cost savings and performance. Featuring Intel Intelligent Power Technology, it reduces energy cost over single core servers by automatically shifting the CPU and memory into the lowest available power state.

In addition, built-in hardware-assisted virtualization technology with Intel Virtualization Technology FlexMigration (Intel VT FlexMigration) gives you the power and flexibility to virtualize different generations of Intel Xeon processor-based servers within the same virtualization pool, giving you the ability to migrate workloads to fewer servers at night to save energy.

If you’re looking for an energy-efficient processor that gives you the power and flexibility you need, upgrade to the Intel Xeon processor 5600 series.

  • newegg Intel QuickPath Technology To deliver top performance for bandwidth-intensive applications, the Intel Xeon processor 5600 series features Intel QuickPath Technology, a platform architecture that provides high-speed (up to 25.6GB/s), point-to-point connections between processors, and between processors and the I/O hub. Each processor has its own dedicated memory that it accesses directly through an Integrated Memory Controller. Intel Nehalem Microarchitecture complements the benefits of Intel QuickPath Interconnect (Intel QPI) by enhancing Intel Smart Cache with an inclusive shared L3 cache that boosts performance while reducing traffic to the processor cores.
  • newegg Intel Virtualization Technology (VT-x) Increasing manageability, security, and flexibility in IT environments, virtualization technologies like hardware-assisted Intel Virtualization Technology (Intel VT) combined with software-based virtualization solutions provide maximum system utilization by consolidating multiple environments into a single server or PC. By abstracting the software away from the underlying hardware, a world of new usage models opens up that reduce costs, increase management efficiency, strengthen security, while making your computing infrastructure more resilient in the event of a disaster.
  • newegg Intel Trusted Execution Technology Intel Trusted Execution Technology for safer computing is a versatile set of hardware extensions to Intel processors and chipsets that enhance the digital office platform with security capabilities such as measured launch and protected execution. Intel Trusted Execution Technology provides hardware-based mechanisms that help protect against software-based attacks and protects the confidentiality and integrity of data stored or created on the client PC. It does this by enabling an environment where applications can run within their own space, protected from all other software on the system. These capabilities provide the protection mechanisms, rooted in hardware, that are necessary to provide trust in the application's execution environment. In turn, this can help to protect vital data and processes from being compromised by malicious software running on the platform.
  • newegg Intel 64 Architecture Intel 64 architecture delivers 64-bit computing on server, workstation, desktop and mobile platforms when combined with supporting software. Intel 64 architecture improves performance by allowing systems to address more than 4 GB of both virtual and physical memory.
  • newegg Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology is an advanced means of enabling very high performance while also meeting the power-conservation needs of mobile systems. Conventional Intel SpeedStep Technology switches both voltage and frequency in tandem between high and low levels in response to processor load.
  • newegg Execute Disable Bit (EDB) Intel's Execute Disable Bit function can prevent certain classes of malicious "buffer overflow" attacks when combined with a supporting operating system. Execute Disable Bit allows the processor to classify areas in memory where application code can execute and where it cannot. When a malicious worm attempts to insert code in the buffer, the processor disables code execution, preventing damage or worm propagation.

5 out of 5 eggsHot PowerHouses

Pros: These things just pump out power. got 2 of these running on my home computer for me to do renderings! it takes no time at all having all 8 cores maxed out at 100%

Cons: Runs Hot! but can be cooled properly

Other Thoughts: Since i have 2 of these next to each other they were running hot. Had stock intel heatsinks with fan but after a 20 min rendering got up to 80c. Put a new water cooling unit in and now never goes above 50c

5 out of 5 eggsGreat just cool properly

Pros: Extremely fast

Cons: Runs extremely hot. Make sure you get a very high quality heat-sinc to go with it or else you're in trouble.

Other Thoughts: Great product just make sure you keep them from melting as they heat up almost instantly.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: I got 2-CPUs, function fine with the SUPERMICRO SYS-6016T-MTLF, ESXi 5.0 installed just fine too.

Cons: More expensive than AMD 8-core processor. Might get more bang for the buck with AMD.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Server Processor

Pros: These processors are very stable with my Asus Z8NA-D6C.
They have a nice amount of cache.
Reasonable price.

Cons: They aren't 3GHz :)

Other Thoughts: I opted to get these as opposed to some of the 2.8Ghz or 3Ghz processors becuase of price. I am rather glad I did, these handle the workload of my server very nicely.
I would highly recommend these processors to anyone looking to build a server for use in the Home or a Small Business.

5 out of 5 eggsFunny Reading

Pros: Speed, Torque, Reliability

Cons: No HT or Turbo

Other Thoughts: its funny that someone put 2 of these procs in their home desktop computer for the extra power. i deployed a single E5606 in a small business HP Server recently and its running 3 windows virtual servers, all 2008R2 and one w/Exch2010, and the system is running at less than 25% load. How exactly is the second cpu helping in your home computer? lol - anyway this chip handled the requirements and then some. Surprised me and the customer.

5 out of 5 eggsBe aware--does NOT include heatsink/fan!

Pros: Great processor.

Cons: Just be aware that although it is a boxed Intel retail set, this particular SKU does NOT include a heat sink/fan... it contains ONLY the CPU. You will need to order thermal protection separately. I don't see that notation anywhere on the product page, and it delayed my system build.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Product

Pros: I replaced my AMD 965 with this and it amazed me how well it kept up. I needed a workstation/server so I wanted a low watt and very cool CPU so I went with this. While it benchmarks lower than the AMD 965 it is much faster in real world applications. It also idles around 19C and never reaches 30C at full load. I love Intel and this is another great product. I am throwing another one of these in my server for a dual CPU build and I expect great results.

Cons: None. It's Intel Duh.

Other Thoughts: I would recommend for anyone that just needs a small home server/workstation. Keep in mind that this is only a 2.13GHz Quad-Core and doesn't include turbo boost or hyperthreading which is why I am putting two of these in my workstation for the extra horsepower in rendering.
