5 out of 5 eggsSuch an upgrade from AMD FX Visehera

Pros: 18 months ago I bought a Visehera 8350 AMD 4.0 Ghz cpu and an AsRock Extreme 9 Mobo for this computer. My goal was to build a computer to handle streaming high level (D1+) League of Legends/SC2. This was (I believe) the best AMD cpu on the market at that time. I could not stream past 720p with the highest settings on either game, as both games are more cpu intensive then graphics wise. Even overclocked to 4.8ghz, the max I could go without raising heat through my water cooler, I could not sustain 1080p with dropping fps to 30 in high processing areas (Teamfights in league, or 200 supply army clashes in sc2).

Since I swapped the Mobo and Cpu from Asrock Extreme 9 and AMD Visehera 4.0ghz piledriver (8x), that isn't even close to an issue. It seriously blows AMD's old flagship out of the water. It isn't even comparable.

I do not even have this overclocked yet, as I just have no need. 1080p SC2/League of Legends with 540p webcam, music, streaming video on second monitor, etc, I can still run both games on high settings with 200-300 fps if I turn v-sync off.

The one time I did overclock, I turned it to 4.3 just to see how it would perform. I received 400 fps in both games, and no discernible temperature increase. Just to test it, I downloaded BF 3 on ultra and streamed, consistent 120+ FPS even streaming. (Although, even on the old setup, BF3 wasn't really a problem, as this game is more GPU intensive then CPU like league or SC2.)

I just have no need to overclock right now as I am not doing 3d modeling or anything that cpu intensive. I'm just using it for gaming purposes atm.

Cons: It is pricey. For just a good mobo combo with this processor + an MSI board (Which i highly suggest, this MSI board is amazing), you can buy a budget pre-built computer. ($500-$600 ish)

Other Thoughts: Worth every penny

Probably will not buy another AMD cpu in my lifetime.

5 out of 5 eggs4.0

Pros: Starting off at 4.0 ghz is any overclockers dream. Always wanted to try a processor with ht and I'm not disappointed. This cpu has a lot of potential. At 4.5 ghz it was a bit faster than my i5 3570k at 4.8 ghz (liquid cooled). However, these are 2 different cpus so I believe at 4.5/4.6 ghz i7 4790k could be a definite upgrade for some. I tried 4.8 ghz but didn't see any huge improvements over 4.6. Coupled with the underdog evga z97 ftw, it's not a bad deal.

Cons: None so far.

5 out of 5 eggsSimply the best

Pros: Fast right out of the box, easy to over-clock, runs very cool for regular stuff, multi-threaded, excellent price, did I say FAST...

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: The best price to performance CPU available at the moment.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: It's an Intel product. You're pretty much guaranteed to get a quality CPU. I'm fairly certain it is the best thing that you can get without going LGA2011.

Cons: I want a sandwich. This thing doesn't make sandwiches. The stock leaf-blower isn't really gonna help me make a sandwich. Not worth a lost egg though.

Other Thoughts: Intel, you guys need to work on getting these CPUs to make sandwiches!

5 out of 5 eggsPowerhouse!

Pros: Speedy. Fast. And also quite quick. Worked like a charm with no issues. Not a single glitch. Haven't overclocked it yet. Runs at about 24-26C at idle in a 23C room with a Zalman 135mm toroidal cooler. Heavy games ramps it up about 15-18 more degrees. Completely pleased with it even if I end up not overclocking it... but I'll do it eventually. First Intel build after 15 years with AMD (which has always performed fine). Blows the doors off my Phenom II 940... which idled at about 40-46C in the same room.

Cons: Wish it was cheaper. It didn't come with a sandwich... and I could use one right now.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Upgrade

Pros: I bought this to replace my old I7 920. Great upgrade and an incredible increase in performance. I recommend this to anyone upgrading from an older generation. Handles everything thrown at it so far. The price is reasonable for it's speed.

Cons: My wife hates how much I enjoy it.

4 out of 5 eggsBlazing Fast and Blazing Hot

Pros: -Stupid Fast
-Intel Name and Quality
-Good at Power Saving Under Light Load / Idle
-Idles at about 24-27C with Ambient Temp of 20C

Cons: This thing runs very, very hot when you push it. I'm running a mid-high end aftermarket air cooler, and the Prime95 Small FFTs test manage to get this thing up to 85C on stock clock settings with an ambient air temp of about 20C. I can tell that the cooler is doing it's job well though, because as soon as the test stops, the temps rocket back down to ~30C within 1 second.

Intel claimed it was the overclocker's dream and 5GHz on air, but unless you've bolted a Noctua NH-D14 onto it and laid your computer down flat to prevent the motherboard from breaking under the weight of that thing, it ain't gonna happen. For that, it loses an egg.

Other Thoughts: I never ran it on the stock cooler, but I can only assume that the thermal trigger would have shut down the CPU if I had tried Prime95 Small FFT.

Granted, the Prime95 Small FFT test is not a very good real-world torture test. While doing gaming or cpu-intensive emulation, the temps never get above 55 Celsius. The thing is that this CPU is so fast that it hardly has to work, so real-world computing doesn't push it to those temp limits.
