5 out of 5 eggsDayum, it's fast (3/2016)

Pros: - Easy to install, no more flimsy pins to bend
- Measured around 207M flops - better than my server
- Nice overclocking options with the right mobo

Cons: - None so far

4 out of 5 eggsWorks Great, minor heat issue

Pros: I have been using this processor for about 2 months and it works great. Tempetures reached around 60 degrees celsius at max load and around 65-70 degrees with a moderate overclock.

Cons: Just like any stock fan, the one that this processor comes with is sub par, although, a 30$ aftermarket air cooler would work just fine for regular use and some minor overclocking.

Other Thoughts: This is a great processor for anyone interested in overclocking.

5 out of 5 eggsOverkill for me - for now

Pros: I bought this on black Friday for my new gaming computer. It was in fact, overkill. The i5 4690k would have been better to pair with my gtx 970 from EVGA. But I do realize that in a few years, the extra 100$ I spent will be good because I'll still have a powerful processor, so then the only upgrades I need to take are gpu, and ram.

Cons: Nothing really, it turbo clocks for no reason even when at idle.

5 out of 5 eggsintel i7 devil's canyon is a beast

Pros: This quad core processor will preform above and beyond any others for the socket it supports. Its great for multi-tasking, gaming, or anything you wish to throw at it. If you want a great processor choose this one.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: If you want it delivered to your house be sure to check signature in the delivery method. because I didn't and FedEx just left it at the door and my dogs chewed it up the fan was in pieces and the processor was still intact. I was happy to know it still works and that was a big relief.

5 out of 5 eggsNothing slows it down

Pros: I work in the design industry. Upgraded from an AMD FX 6300 to this bad boy. Now I can have multiple 4k documents open in Photoshop or Corel Painter and this thing doesn't skip a beat. I got about 15-30 FPS increases in games. Very noticeable difference. No more waiting or loading, just instant results. You get what you pay for. I am very happy with the purchase and would certainly recommend.

My temps after stress testing @4.4GHz with a Hyper 212 EVO and Arctic Silver thermal paste:

74C (100% Load)
55C (Medium Load)
40C (Light Load)
31C (Idle)

Cons: - Stock cooler is meh. Just investing in a $30 Hyper 212 Evo cooler was enough to keep it under 80C at full load @4.4GHz with some Arctic Silver paste or equivalent. Other than that nothing.

Other Thoughts: My Specs:

i7-4790k
EVGA GTX 970 SSC ACX 2.0
16GB DDR3 1600 (Crucial Ballistix Elite)
EVGA 600B 600W PSU
MSI Z97 Gaming 5 Mobo

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic performance

Pros: I designed my system with the intent to use it for video editing/encoding and running emulators, both of which require very high single-thread performance. So far I have been completely satisfied with the fantastic performance of this processor.

Cons: It's hot. Realllllly hot. I have a 1-rad closed loop liquid cooler (a Seidon 120M), and when the CPU is under a load above 50-60% the temperatures will jump to about 65C. It works, and 65 is still tolerable, I'm just saying to make sure you get a good cooler if you want a quiet system, and it's ABSOLUTELY necessary if you intend to overclock.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat processor!

Pros: Powerful
Easy to Overclock
Frames Per Second Increase in Games!

Cons: Runs hot! Make sure you get an aftermarket cooler for this thing, especially if you overclock it.

Other Thoughts: This processor is amazing! I use my computer for music editing and heavy gaming and this processor gets the job done.
I have overclocked it to 4.6ghz pretty easily(get Intel's Performance Tuning Plan guys! the regular 3 year warranty doesn't cover overclocking!)
I am using a closed loop water cooler with this and it runs anywhere from 33c(idle) to 70-80c(100% load all 8 threads)
I would recommend anyone to toss the stock cooler and go for an aftermarket solution or else you may throttle under heavier loads.

5 out of 5 eggsBest of the i7 Quad Core Haswell Series!

Pros: Runs cool on stock heatsink under normal usage (28-35C), even after hours of extended usage.
4.0 native GHz with 4.4GHz Turbo Boost.
Fastest Quad Core CPU built!

Cons: To some, same heatsink that's included with many Haswell CPU's, including the Pentium & i3 series. Not an issue for me, but may be for some.

The same old push pin retention clips that's been used by Intel for 10+ years. Cure described below.

Other Thoughts: Installed as a temporary replacement in my XPS 8700 to break in the CPU while saving for a custom build. Had to snip off the 10+ year old style push pin retention clips carefully from the bottom & push through the top to remove/discard. Here's the trick that I learned on a Tech forum. Using 4 of the screws that holds an optical drive in place (the long ones), one can install this cooler with those screws with no problem. Prior to install, I removed the installed thermal solution & used a small pea sized drop of MX-4 thermal paste that's often on promo here for $5.99 for a 4 gram tube. Do not spread the paste, rather lower the cooler slowly & level, once in place, give it a very slight wiggle, this spreads the paste.

Now tighten the screws in a criss-cross pattern until it's snug, should take about 4-5 rounds to do so, just make it snug, do not over torque the screws. If desired, one can use a slight amount of whatever that blue coating on the screws to hold in place, I didn't have any at the time, but it's OK.

For those who says this BEAST runs hot, under normal usage, that's an untruth, as I pointed out on Pros. I run my PC 10-14 hours per day, and rarely does the CPU surpass the 35C mark, maybe when running an extended AV/Malware scan, but during normal use, it runs cooler than the i7-4700 that shipped with the PC, which was initially cool, but when swapping was hitting 50C often during AV scans, idling at 30C, under light (normal for me) usage with 15-20 Web pages open, about 35-40C.

So properly prepared & installed, the i7-4790K runs like a champ at lower temps, that's the key. Don't skimp on the thermal paste, what comes with the CPU also does for most any Haswell desktop CPU, that's not good enough for a high performance CPU.

Anyway, am very satisfied with purchase, and to put the icing on the cake, PassMark scores for this CPU cleanly beat the 6th gen i7-6700K by over 200 points. In fact, the 6700K is not in the Top 10 Common CPU's, though the 4790K is, and even the 4700 I removed is in 4th place. So it appears that Moore's Law has maybe ran it's course, the dies cannot keep shrinking & maintain the power of the 2nd through 4th gen i7 CPU's.

Enter Devil's Canyon, while you can, as the final run of these will be very pricey, there's no more $289-299 promos for this chip on Newegg. Get it while you can, once they're gone, the secondary markets will charge a fortune for this fantastic chip. :-)
