3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Not expensive.Seems to be fast.
For Windows XP drivers are not necessary. However if you wish you Windows looks nice you need them.

Cons: Cables are short with non standard connector on readers and. Had to make longer cable myself, this may be hard for average user. Drivers on AZIO website are not for reader I got. They are for Genesis logic chip, the reader I got has Alcon Micro chip.

Other Thoughts: If you wish to have nice functional icons for flash drives. Go to Vivanco web site and dowload driver for 36-1 reader, works very well with this reader.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks well

Pros: Installation was fairly straightforward. Card read speed is pretty good. No compatibility problems with any of the cards that I have tried (mostly SD, a few CF). No problems with it at all. Good value for the price.

Cons: All drive letters show up in My Computer, even when there are no cards in the slots.

Other Thoughts: I named the drives so that I could figure out what drive goes to what slot-type. It would be much nicer if the drive letters weren't mapped when there's no memory in the slot.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Easy to install. SD slot works great. Fast. Cheap. XP recognized it fine.

Cons: 1) My Compact Flash slot doesn't work. Not sure why.
2) The slots show up as drives F, G, H, I on "My Computer." I tried to change the various names to "SD slot", "CF slot", etc, but the change is temporary. When I reboot, it defaults back to F, G, H, I. Not a big deal, but it would be nice not to have to remember them.
3) Also, the cards are not easy to get out once you put them in the slot, though this could be partly because my Dell has a curved front, with the drive bays recessed a bit.

Other Thoughts: I just hooked this up to my 4 year old Dell 4400 running XP with SP2. The SD card slot works just fine, and is fast. When I plug a CF card in, however, all four drives simply disappear. I have to reboot to bring them up again. I still have an old Canon G2 camera that I use sometimes, and it would be nice to have that CF slot working. Also, I had to buy a second Rosewill USB PCI adapter. The RC-101 didn't have the little pins on it. The RC-100 does, and you need them to connect the AZIO card reader to it. (My motherboard doesn't have them.)

5 out of 5 eggsGood reader

Pros: Easy installation. Windows XP installed all drivers automatically. Works as advertised. Good fit and finish to match my PC.

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: This is installed in a Dell Dimension 4100 Pentium 3. The Azio card requires 2 USB connections, one for the reader and one for the USB port. Each USB connection takes 4 pins (power, data x 2, ground). A standard internal USB header has 9 pins and supports two USB connections (the 9th pin is an unused ground). I bought this with a Rosewill USB 2.0 adapter card (RC-100) with the required 9-pin internal USB header. A very easy and inexpensive setup that works much better than any removable card reader I've tried, and you get an easily accessable USB port in the bargain.

4 out of 5 eggsGood case addition for many users

Pros: I have 20 yrs experience building systems. These days, card readers are a useful replacement for the deprecated FDD. This unit is sealed, mounted in a metal 3.5" frame. Mounting was easy and solid. Sealed case means dust buildup is minimized.

The universal USB pigtail has 2 each, 3 pins+gnd. That means it will work with any header plug arrangement. The down side is you must check pinout and placement.

Worked with the XD, CF and SD cards I tested. I'll buy this unit again.

Cons: The header cable was about 3" shorter than I expected. It worked with a little re-routing, but check your MoBo to mount distance. A tall tower might be too much.

Other Thoughts: Most motherboards have unused USB these days. Adding the card reader for camera, phone and MP3 players is a cost effective addition.

5 out of 5 eggs4 stars - if it weren't so cheap

Pros: Cheap. Works with xD card. Installed 3 (ME, 2k & XP) & they all function - 3 system sample group all is good.

Cons: I've only used the xD, CF, & SD slots ... noticed that the level of precision (opening size) 'snugness' - isn't great. I don't think I'd buy it as a system starter (MicroDrive) etc.. But, if you just need something to read your camera photos (don't mind wiggling the card into place a little) - this seems to do the job

Other Thoughts: For $12 you can't beat it.

4 out of 5 eggsmore info

Pros: This updates my 12/16 review.
Registry VID/PID indicates controller is an Alcor Micro AU6375 Rev 1.01. This controller has a rep as a top performer with max transfer speed of 17+ MB/s.
Correcting my previous typo; test card was 10MB/s.

Cons: Lockup also occurs if any connected reader has a card in at startup. Also found it's enough to just kill power to reader to recover.

3 out of 5 eggsgreat, except for -

Pros: Installed with no problems on ABIT AN8 Ultra MB. Fits bay exactly, attractive finish, clear lettering. Quick response to access requests. Reads/writes 10Mb/s cards (fastest I have) at full speed. No issues with SATA compatibility.

Cons: Power light always on. Cards only insert about 5/8" inch but are snuggly held.
WARNING!. For me, Startup with a card installed results in access failure with WinXP Device I/O error. To fix, uninstall that Disk drive Device, the Stowage Volume then the USB Mass Stowage Device in that order, next remove power to the reader and reboot. (Maybe all steps are not req; experiment). Does not happen with my other USB reader. Have now set BIOS to boot to removable drives first as a safety stop.

Other Thoughts: Beige actual color scans as 207R/193B/187G. Closer to the Newegg pic than the Azio website.
Cable uses dual 3+1 plugs. Install easier if you bundle the four plugs by wrapping with electrical tape.
