Zalman’s feather-light aluminum S Series 2.5’’ SSDs contain both SATA II and mini-USB 2.0 interfaces, providing higher convenience and flexibility as either a portable storage device or internal disk drive. In addition to the dual interface, by utilizing a JMicron controller chip, as well as cutting-edge flash memory with 128MB DDR2 cache buffer, the S Series achieves ultra-fast access and transferring performance with a read speed of up to 260 MB/s and write throughput speed of up to 210 MB/s (60MB/s for 32GB Model). Optimized for AHCI Mode along with Windows 7 Trim support, the S Series also enables ultra fast start-up and access speed, as well as silent and low power operation.

  • newegg SSD Storage Technology Unlike traditional hard disk drives, SSDs have no moving parts, resulting in a quiet, cool, highly reliable storage solution that also offers faster application loading and system responsiveness. And for laptops and netbooks, the lower power needs of SSDs translate to extended battery life. Higher performance with more durability means you can be truly mobile with confidence.
  • newegg A Major Upgrade in Performance In addition to its 128MB DDR2 SDRAM, the Zalman S Series utilizes the latest JMicron controller and Intel MLC NAND Flash to stand out among its competitors, providing up to 260 MB/s sequential read speed and up to 60 MB/s write performance (32GB Model).
  • newegg Trim Support The Zalman S Series SSDs offer TRIM support than can be enabled in Windows 7. Designed to maintain the performance of SSD at an optimal level over the lifetime of the drive, TRIM functions by actively deleting invalid data from the SSD’s memory cells to ensure that write operations perform at full speed. Since a memory block must be erased before it can be re-programmed, TRIM improves performance by pro-actively erasing pages containing invalid data, allowing the SSD to write new data without first having to perform a time-consuming erase command.
  • newegg Dual Interfaces, Flexible Usage The Zalman S Series equips SATA II and mini-USB dual interfaces for greater convenience and flexibility. The SSD can be used either as an external portable storage drive, or as an installed disk in laptop or desktop PC compatible with 2.5’’ SSD.

1 out of 5 eggsDoesn't work right out of the box

Pros: None

Cons: Plugged the drive into my USB port, but the drive wasn't recognized in either Windows Explorer or Disk Management. It apparently installs OK, and is recognized by Task Manager, but there is no way to access it to either assign a drive letter, or format. This is the first time I've had this kind of problem with a USB drive.

Went to Zalman website, but clicking on the Support or RMA options does nothing. Needless to say, I'm not impressed.

4 out of 5 eggsNice product

Pros: Had no issues installing on it's own, or in a RAID 0 array with a different brand SSD. (Patriot) Runs 8+ hours a day everyday, with no issues thus far. Came with a USB adapter for use as a portable drive/USB drive.

Cons: Not big enough for Windows 7.

Other Thoughts: I like the fact that I can use this as a portable SSD/USB drive, when I replace my RAID array with a single, larger drive.

3 out of 5 eggsZalman SSD

Pros: Really fast, big difference in start up times.

Usb port was a big plus along with the included cable,
but i found that i never really used it much.

The drive had a nice black polished aluminum look.

3 year warranty was a lifesaver and a biggg plus.

Cons: drive died after 8 months. waiting for the replacement in RMA now.

Other Thoughts: after the drive died, i was able to see it with USB even though nothing showed up with SATA connections to my motherboard. The problem was that it said "Access Denied" on the user folder no matter what i did to much around with permissions.

oh well, lost a handful of documents i forgot to backup...

all in all i'm still satisfied with my purchase so long as they keep replacing the drive as needed within the 3 year warranty period, we'll see how things play out

1 out of 5 eggsDidn't honor their rebate!

Pros: It's SSD.

Cons: It's only large enough to handle WIN7 and maybe an Office suite. You're maxed out after that!

Other Thoughts: Do not buy this product if there is a mail in rebate attached to it. They don't honor the rebate if you don't have an INVOICE number on the form. I gave them EVERYTHING else they needed from the receipt to the UPC code and what not but they wouldn't issue me my check because of an INVOICE number even after I emailed them the exact number. I've been buying hardware and software for over 15 years with and without mail in rebates and have NEVER had a problem like this. Stick with Kingston for your memory needs and WDC or Seagate for your HD and SSD needs. NEWEGG RULEZ of course too!!!

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: See my review on 2/22/2011

Cons: Drive died today, after about 4 months of light use. Is not recognized by any SATA port on any motherboard I own. Weird part is that the mini-USB still works. Going to send it in to Zalman and hope that they're not bad about replacing it.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Value Customer,

We do offer 3 years warranty on all our SSD, please go to our website at www.zalman.com under Customer Center and file a RMA. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Team Zalman USA

5 out of 5 eggsI havent bought one, but want too

Pros: ---

Cons: ---

Other Thoughts: To the guy that gave this product 1 egg due to service. Your a loyal customer of 10 years but you have one bad experience and that throws 10 years down the drain. You weren't loyal to begin with then, if you really going to let this one bad incident get to you.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Got it cheap. $45 after MIR in December. Rebate processed correctly, no hassles with that.
Benched at 205MB/s in HDTune. I've heard (but not confirmed) that it is a JMicron controller. It's an older controller, but the performance was excellent.
It has a mini-USB port, and includes a mini-USB to two USB cables, so it can be used externally very easily without requiring any enclosure, cables, power adapters, or anything else.
It has a blue LED mounted in the top that is an activity indicator, which is cool.

Cons: Only legitimate complaint is a lack of included accessories. When I bought my Intel SSD, I got a SATA cable, a molex to SATA adapter, and a 3.5" to 2.5" adapter to use it in a normal hard drive bay, with screws. This only included the drive and the USB cable. I have spare cables so it wasn't a huge problem, and I ended up using velcro to mount it to my case since it is very small and light and has no moving parts.

Other Thoughts: Not the biggest or the fastest drive around, but it was the cheapest I've seen a 30+ GB SSD drive go for, so I'm very happy with it as a HTPC boot drive.

1 out of 5 eggsFirst horrible experience with Newegg

Pros: As fast as advertised when working....

Cons: I would give this product a 0 egg rating if i could as well as newegg's service. Product failed after 2 weeks of use. Caused my system to hang at verifying DMI pool. Once i got it back online with another HDD, the drive would fail to format... tried with OSX, Win7 and Ubuntu. No luck.

Other Thoughts: I've been a newegg customer for well over 8 years, building a new system almost every year sometimes 2... RMA'ed the drive back to newegg to get a response saying i have to RMA the drive back to Zalman... what a great waste of time, i could care less about the 10 bucks it cost to ship back... definitely the most inconvenience i've experience. they can't even take care of a loyal customer. Was going to build a complete Sandy Bridge System... but i'll take my business else where.

5 out of 5 eggsReally Great for Gaming

Pros: At near 260MB/S, very fast reads. I wanted a drive to run games from, not worried about the write speed at all, but its not slow at writing either. While I have not tested the read speed, it loads my games lightning fast. When I log into an MMO, almost no waiting while the other players generate around me.

Cons: None really. Would like it to be bigger, but for the price got it for less than $50 after a one day rebate) , this was a steal.

Other Thoughts: Was supposed to be 3 day shipping, but NewEgg sent it ground, was not very happy about that. But no eggs off, since that was not a problem with the drive itself.

First ran it in an external esata dock, just moved it internal today. Either way, runs like a champ!

5 out of 5 eggsCheap, fast, what else do you want?

Pros: I bought this as a boot drive for a win7 build i was making. it was easy to set up and install onto. boot time is around 20 or less, average for an ssd, but overall fast.

Cons: There is a blue light that blinks repeatedly in the center of the drive. It's not a con really, just annoying if you dont have blue lights in your case. Also, 32gb is on the low edge for a boot drive, so be prepared for it to fill all the way up.thats all.

Other Thoughts: Zalman's been making these for only a month or two now, but they seem to have hit it right with this drive. this isnt high performance or anything, but it is reliable, slim, and oh so fast!
