Pros: There was absolutely no

Cons: front bezel is a little larger than standard 3.5" bezels. the metal casing around the unit came apart when I was placing front face of tower back on. I have been building and servicing computers since 1992, this little unit literally caused my motherboard to short out because of its poor design. When I had replaced the front panel of the tower back on case the face plate was caught and I did not know it, this caused the metal casing of the card reader to come off and fall inside the system. It fell in such away the a cable held it up, and the corner was touching the motherboard, so you know the never again from startech again. they used to have quality items I have used them in the past, but no more.

3 out of 5 eggsMeh

Pros: Cheap, works (mostly)

Cons: Doesn't always successfully read my 16GB transcend SDHC card. Some days it works, other days it doesn't. Really odd. In my other computer it works every time, so it's probably not the card's fault.

Other Thoughts: If you want to go on the cheap, this'll work I guess. The problem mentioned above isn't a dealbreaker to me really; I can plug in my camera via USB as a workaround. Don't have any other SDHC cards to test with.

4 out of 5 eggsDoes the Job for a Good Price

Pros: - Needed a card reader for compact flash, memory stick and SD cards (didn't try the other slots). I've only had it a few days, but it was plug & play and works great for all my media on a Windows 7 Pro 32-bit Dell Vostro 430 system.
- I also like that it takes all my cards right-side-up.
- The green power led/light stays on but is not too bright, like other readers. The led/light turns amber when a card is inserted and flickers during data activity.
- The overall construction seems solid enough. It comes with mounting screws, and the cable was plenty long to plug into my mother board.
- Bottom line, it works, and that's what I needed.

Cons: - The USB port is upside-down, but no big deal since I won't use it.
- I would prefer if the CF slot was a little deeper. It's kinda shallow, but just deep enough to protect the pins. A little deeper slot would make it easier to slide the card in at the right alignment, but it's fine if you are careful.
- The entire metal case to the unit was not as long/deep as the reader I was replacing, so my computer case only let me mount it with one side screw. That's probably plenty, but I'd prefer two screws on the mounting side. The reader does have more side holes, so perhaps another computer case would allow mounting with 2 screws.

Other Thoughts: I bought this unit to replace an existing card reader that was temperamental on my system when it came to CF cards. So far, this reader seems to deliver the consistency that I expect and need. Thus, I am happy so far and would recommend this StarTech unit.
