5 out of 5 eggsBuy the 2 piece kit

Pros: Works in Dell SC440. Passed MemTest 64+

Cons: I wish I had bought in 2 piece kit instead of separate sticks.

4 out of 5 eggsI believe in ECC-RAM, and so should you!

Pros: Extra reliability for mission-critical workstation/server applications. Standard JEDEC *5-5-5-15 timing, and standard +1.8v Vdimm voltage. I didn't try overclocking the RAM, as that defeats the point of server stability.

Cons: More expensive than non-ECC RAM, and compatible with fewer motherboards! Specifically, this Kingston RAM wasn't compatible with the ECS P4M800RPO-M v2 -- I put in 2 sticks (2 x 1GB), but the motherboard BIOS could only detect 1GB total, and I got all sorts of random lockups, memtest86 failures.

Other Thoughts: Why buy non-ECC RAM when you can buy ECC RAM? A lot of desktop motherboards will work just fine with unbuffered ECC-RAM, they'll simply ignore the ECC functionality. I've successfully used a number of 'budget' desktop motherboards with this Kingston ECC RAM: ECS C51GM-M, Geforce6100SM-M, K8M890M-M, Asrock Conroe-eSATA2. All used the RAM just fine, in non-ECC mode. The ECS P4M800PRO-M v2 was the only failure, it just didn't like the Kingston ECC sticks at all (but it ran just fine with a different set of Crucial ECC RAM.)
