Update on Vista
- Pros: Once its at the desktop on 32-bit Vists Ultimate, it's snappy, fast, and does not stutter. Programs seem to install somewhere between a good 7200 drive and a Velociraptor, even though it's only SATA 1. Programs launch FAST. I can't make it pause or stutter. It reads fast, as when I am backing it up to a mechanical drive with Norton Ghost. Drive geometry alignment is easy and usually automatic under Vista or Win7. Drive was cool to the touch during install, as my case was open and I could feel the top of the drive.
- Cons: It's supposedly a re-worked JMicron controller. Word has it the drive has zero onboard RAM cache. It's slow to install Vista Ultimate onto. I downloaded SP1 and SP2 to a second mechanical drive in the system I use for backups and IW temp files such. Installation went much faster off the second drive as a source than when downloading and installing updates from the drive itself via Windows Update.
- Other Thoughts: I'd recommend this drive, actually. I'm using it on an old Pentium D 940 system with a ICH 6 or 7 Intel controller as a single disk raid solution. That board and CPU are not speed demons. I would imagine putting a second one on in RAID 0 would speed things up a lot. With current pricing, that's not bad at about $2 per GB. A better CPU would no doubt help as well.
It's just a hard drive
- Pros: Fast, accessory kit to fit it to a 3.5 bay.
quiet.
- Cons: Price!
Speed not good enough to justify cost, Small capacity, not raid capatible?
- Other Thoughts: After reading the reviews I was impressed, so I took a chance and ordered this drive.
It’s a fine drive, don’t get me wrong, and it is fast, although I think my raid 0 array in my other computer is just as fast. And it is quiet. But for the price I could have gotten 3 standard HDD and ran raid 5 and had parity along with the speed, and a whole lot more disk space to boot. It is a step in the right direction and I bet in 5 years as the capacity grows and the price shrinks on SSD’s the “spinning platter” HDD will have gone the way of the floppy disk.
Drive fine, rebate confusing
- Pros: The drive is fine, reasonably fast, quiet and runs cool as expected.
- Cons: The reason for me writing this review is the rebate from Kingston is a joke.
I have checked the Kingston FAQ, called their help line (automated computer only) and read the T&C.. Every where is says, do not include a confirmation email or packing slip as they will not be accepted. No place does it say what to send except a sales receipt which is WHAT for an online transaction???
- Other Thoughts: Rebates should not be this frustrating.. It reflects badly on newegg..
