Kingston's new SSDNow V+180 in the 1.8-inch form factor is designed to address the Enterprise, SMB & Consumer needs regarding ultraportable notebooks, sub-notebooks, tablet PC's and Netbook upgrades currently utilizing the 1.8 inch hard disk drive form factor.

SSDNow drives are a perfect replacement for hard drives resulting in faster, more reliable performance and increased durability and battery life. Making this change will improve efficiency in a wide range of tasks, from booting up to running the most robust operating system tasks and demanding applications. You’ll never get slowed down again by an antivirus scan while on an important meeting. Other benefits include reduced power usage, less noise and less heat generation.

  • newegg SSD Storage Technology Unlike traditional hard disk drives, SSDs have no moving parts, resulting in a quiet, cool, highly reliable storage solution that also offers faster application loading and system responsiveness. And for laptops and netbooks, the lower power needs of SSD’s translate to extended battery life. Higher performance with more durability means you can be truly mobile with confidence.
  • newegg TRIM Support The Kingston SSDNow V+180 offers TRIM support than can be enabled in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. Designed to maintain the performance of SSD at an optimal level over the lifetime of the drive, TRIM functions by actively deleting invalid data from the SSD’s memory cells to ensure that write operations perform at full speed. Since a memory block must be erased before it can be re-programmed, TRIM improves performance by pro-actively erasing pages containing invalid data, allowing the SSD to write new data without first having to perform a time-consuming erase command.
  • newegg Highly effective Garbage Collection For those operating systems not supporting TRIM, The Kingston SSDNow V+180 solid-state drive features highly effective Garbage Collection to ensure maximum performance over time.

4 out of 5 eggsSolid on HP 2530p

Pros: Does quite well at file transfers. Booting 7 64 bit is not blinding fast but a 400% improvement over the original 5400 rpm HDD. All programs load quickly. Well suited for OS without trim command as it has aggressive Garbage Collection.

Cons: Pricey compared to other SSD in this capacity. More a 128gb price with less performance (No NCQ).

Other Thoughts: Mainly got this because of turtle HDD. Read review on it and its file transfer speeds were what I required and it has not disappointed.

4 out of 5 eggsSolid SSD

Pros: After 5 months with the drive, everything seems to be working well with a only one clean installation of Windows 7 Ultimate x64 since purchase. The drive significantly improved my HP 2730p over its 5400 rpm 1.8" Samsung drive. Boot time was cut from 80 seconds to about 30 seconds. Launching most programs takes about 1-3 seconds as opposed to 3-10 seconds. In general, the knowledge that the drive is impervious to shock damage is well worth the cost, so the speed is just a nice bonus.

Cons: 64GB is way too small a capacity for a Windows 7 installation with programs. I should have splurged and purchased a larger drive. Also, the random write speeds are off when benchmarking. For some reason, random write measures only about 25 MB/s instead of the low 200s that have been measured online. Also, Kingston support was not helpful.

Other Thoughts: Be sure to make the necessary modification in your BIOS to AHCI.

5 out of 5 eggsSSDs make thin and lights zoom!

Pros: Fast speeds - 200MB Reads vs 54MB (5400RPM 1.8" Drive)
Good write speeds also - 180MB/s or so.
Stays cool - 35C is the hottest i've seen

Cons: It's only 64GB, granted i'm only using 20GB so still ok.
New Tech, still makes you think about it sometimes?

Other Thoughts: It runs great in my Thinkpad T410s which uses these 1.8" drives. I was hoping for a Intel but this Kingston seems to be working just fine as well over the past ~60 days.

5 out of 5 eggsImprovement Over Traditional 1.8 HDD

Pros: If your currently running a traditional 1.8 HDD (typically in the 5400 RPM or less range) the difference is night and day. In an EliteBook 2530P my Win 7 score went from 5.0 to 7.1. For perspective an Intel X25-M scores 7.7 on my desktop computer, so it's not the fastest SSD to be sure.

Cons: For a value drive the price could be better, though the non-standard drive size probably plays into it.

Other Thoughts: The performance of this drive is supposed to be akin to the current Macbook Air, though Apple has recently begun replacing the Toshiba branded drives with faster Samsung SSD modules.

5 out of 5 eggsGood

Pros: It works very well. fast boot up and great speeds in a quad core setup.

Cons: i ordered this by accident instead of the 2.5 inch, and the connections are different. the adapter is about $9. my mistake, it was on sale, and i grabbed it while i could.

Other Thoughts: i originally bought this for my laptop. it increased start-up time, but did not help with the battery life alot (maybe 30 minutes) and my laptop is a step up form a netbook, so maxize improvements were not seen. i sold the laptop and the drive sat on my desktop for about 1 month.

1 month later, i built my own desktop, and used it. (yeah, a 1.8 inch drive in a desktop is kinda strange)

my setup is pretty good on my desktop. quad core at 3.9GHZ, 4gb DDR 3, and sata 6gb's connections. this drive made the start up about 8 - 12 seconds (not really sure) and every works very well. all programs start up very fast. i love it.

now i bought a tablet PC, and i am debating if i want to use it or not. i think i might just buy a 2nd one, but one that is better on power.
