1 out of 5 eggsGarbage

Pros: Speed

Cons: Dies quickly without warning

Other Thoughts: This was my first eval of an SSD drive. Lured by the potential speed increase I decided to give it a try.

The drive is fast. No doubt about it. I spend more time looking at the bios than I do the windows startup screen.

After appx 6 months use, one evening I powered off my machine and the next morning, on power up, the drive was dead. What's worse is that when it dies it just disappears as though it's disconnected from the machine so there's no chance to repair it or update firmware or do any of the things I would do to a failing HD.

I will try SSD again... just not kingston.

3 out of 5 eggsFast, but not so reliable

Pros: It's an SSD, get's the job done. Fast drives, quick read and write times. Price is OK

Cons: Reliability issues. Purchased a bunch of these drives for two new servers, an SQL and an App server. They were put into a RAID configuration on an LSI controller (different level depending on volume usage). I've had multiple drives fail. Luckily all the was necessary was a simple rebuild, but I can tell you it's quite scary when your SQL database array fails. I've had failures on RAID levels of 0, 1, and 5 on internal, expansion and Windows Disk Managed arrays.

Other Thoughts: Good drives for home use. I'd never have purchased for a large scare production environment (these were purchased by my predecessor and I came in just-in-time for them to be needed). SSD's, IMHO, are not time tested enough yet to be used in a mission critical role. There are other SSD's out there that may be more reliable for said roles.

5 out of 5 eggsInsanely faster than my 5400RPM Laptop drive

Pros: I bought this drive to replace the standard 5400RPM drive that came with my Fujitsu Lifebook T730. Swapping them was a piece of cake, as this drive has the exact same dimensions. I put a fresh install of Windows 7 on it and it took around 20 minutes from start to finish. When I open Photoshop CS5, it's like it was already running in the background. Very impressive.

Cons: Price is still kinda high for SSD, but they're coming down a little bit more each day.

Other Thoughts: I was going to go with a WD Velociraptor, but apparently they are just a tiny bit too thick to fit into most laptops.

5 out of 5 eggsSeasoned newbie

Pros: Nice upgrade bundle. The Acronis cloning software worked perfectly. Included mounting rails made installation easy.

Win XP boots in about 25 seconds and apps load much faster.

Cons: None so far.

In six months, this drive will be half the price.
