Kingston's SSDNow S100 solid-state drives are designed for small capacity hard drive replacements and upgrades, making them a perfect match for system integrators and white box builders. With commercial grade components, they're ideal for non-PC applications from gaming and casinos to highway tollbooths and digital signage.

  • newegg SSD Storage Technology Unlike traditional hard disk drives, SSDs have no moving parts, resulting in a quiet, cool, highly reliable storage solution that also offers faster application loading and system responsiveness. And for laptops and netbooks, the lower power needs of SSD’s translate to extended battery life. Higher performance with more durability means you can be truly mobile with confidence.
  • newegg TRIM Support The Kingston SSDNow S100 offers TRIM support on Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Linux 2.6.33 operating systems. Designed to maintain the performance of SSD at an optimal level over the lifetime of the drive, TRIM functions by actively deleting invalid data from the SSD’s memory cells to ensure that write operations perform at full speed. Since a memory block must be erased before it can be re-programmed, TRIM improves performance by pro-actively erasing pages containing invalid data, allowing the SSD to write new data without first having to perform a time-consuming erase command.

1 out of 5 eggsFailed just past warranty

Pros: It is an SSD

Cons: Failed for good just outside of warranty... started failing by being invisible to the system sometimes after about a year.

Other Thoughts: Eh it should have lasted longer, SMART had no beef with it.

Stopped showing up in the in the system, then was invisible in BIOS. Power cycle would fix it, but not this time.. luckily I ordered a replacement the last time it went invisible.

Manufacturer Response:

4 out of 5 eggsNice for its time and still running...

Pros: Not sure how I missed reviewing this product, but better late than never. For its time it was a good SSD drive. Albeit perhaps slow on transfer speeds compared to today's drives - it has proved quite reliable over the years and has yet to fail me. I mostly use it for speedboosting Windows now.

Cons: Small, but everything when I bought it was. It has yet to fail me - like other modern day SSDs has...

1 out of 5 eggsI recant my previous opinion of Kingston

Pros: This drive has no pros - I went through two that did not work. *HOWEVER* Kingston did finally come through in the end and gave me a much better replacement drive.

Cons: The initial 2 drives of this model did not work.

1 out of 5 eggsMore RMA troubles

Pros: I'm trying to find one. Initial RMA process was bad, then was good, now it's really really bad...

Cons: So, after posting my first review here, I got a quick response from Kingston - I shipped my drive in, and they sent one back next day - awesome! What was really bad is the replacement was bad - like, they didn't even test the replacement they sent me, apparently. They did apologize and offered to upgrade to a 32GB drive, and provided me a next day label to send that bad drive back. Now, it's been 2 weeks since sending the broken drive back, and I just got a report that they are backordered and it'll be another week before my NEW replacement is shipped. My machine hasn't worked for over a month, and now I have to hope that when I *do* finally get a replacement drive that it will actually work. I'm confident unless something radical happens to sway my opinion, this will be, for sure the last Kingston product I ever purchase.

1 out of 5 eggsWorked great, then just died.

Pros: none. even the warranty process sucks.

Cons: I bought this to boot Ubuntu in a little Atom PC I have. Worked great for about a year, and then one day it just doesn't show up. I hit up Kingston's website today to do the RMA process, and come to find out since this is a Discontinued item they have to 'repair' it and won't replace it. How exactly do you repair an SSD? Anyway - I still haven't gotten even a confirmation e-mail from the RMA department, so hopefully I will, and I will actually get this drive 'repaired'.

Manufacturer Response:

We apologize for the issue you are having. The online form defaults to a repair for any discontinued product, however, most, if not all, flash parts do not go under the repair process. For faster warranty service, please call our Support Staff at 1-800-435-0640 (USA and Canada only) M - F 6am - 6pm PT and one of our Technical Support Representatives will assist you. Please be sure to have the part on hand if you call in.

Thank you for selecting Kingston as your upgrade partner.

2 out of 5 eggsGood, but not reliable

Pros: Simple, fast... while it lasted

Cons: Dying and nearly dead. Have to replace this drive since it is consistently giving errors in the Linux network gateway machine where I have it installed. I have a 2nd one too that I am worried will fail as well.

1 out of 5 eggsDead After 14months

Pros: Worked OK before failing. Gave it 1 egg for that.

Cons: Dead after 14months of use in my DVR. Can't be seen by any of my computers when installed. If I can't see it, I can't format it and give it another chance.

Other Thoughts: Although I use this in a DVR running 24/7, all video recordings are done on an external drive, so there is very
little writing to this SSD. It only had to handle the OS and the security camera application.

Manufacturer Response:

2 out of 5 eggsBoot Failures After Firmware Update

Pros: Works OK once I get it past the system boot.
As long as my system is on, it seems to work OK.

Cons: Unreliable as far as booting up. Atom based, Intel motherboard almost always fails to recognize this SSD when booting up. I have to retry several times, and so far, it eventually manages to get past this problem.

Other Thoughts: I've built two DVRs with this SSD. It contains only the OS, and all videos go to a terabyte external drive. I upgraded the firmware before using it and it seemed to work OK for a few days, but now fails to see the SSD until I reboot several times. DVRs are required to run 24/7 with a battery backup, so I won't see many reboots. However, the DVR must also boot up on it's own after a long power failure without intervention. This will be a problem. I will eventually have to switch to something more reliable.
Perhaps it would work better without the firmware upgrade???
