5 out of 5 eggsMuch more than it seems...

Pros: - Excellent fit and finish. The shell is composed of two brushed metal plates with a tough plastic layer sandwiched in the middle. The plastic is a semi-translucent smoked gray that allows the LED indicator lights to shine through. The device feels like it could take some abuse and not be crushed by a book or other stuff in a backpack.

- It's very compact (about the size of a clam shell business card holder). Personally, I prefer a flat shape to a stick such as PQI's other product, the Air Pen 6W41-0000R2 because it's easier to squeeze inside the sleeve for a tablet, binder, etc.

- For its size, battery life is very good. I got more than 4 hours after a full charge and charging via a normal USB port (5V/500mA) takes about 3.5 hrs. Since the PQI Air Drive A100 can operate with the WiFi turned on while charging from its USB cable, using a compact portable Li-Ion battery pack with about a 1500 mAh capacity will easily double the run time. It's not necessary to use a battery pack that outputs more than 500mA so go with the smallest one that accepts a USB standard "A" connector and suits your particular needs.

- The WiFi signal is intended for short range (same room, car, ...) but it worked fine even through a wall or two in a building. It also worked fine with the Air Drive inside the pocket of a jacket. The unit gets a tad warm when it's in a pocket, but it didn't freeze or pause even once while streaming a movie for more than 90 minutes.

- The free Android/iOS client app (PQI Air Drive+). If you have more than one media player app installed, when you click on a video you get prompted for the player to use. Depending on the combination of device, media player and video encoding it can handle 1080p. Streaming a single 1080p/H.264 video from a Class 10 SDHC flash card was pretty good. Most tablets and phones have lower resolution displays and are often used where the lighting conditions aren't ideal so using 720p video is fine (and as a bonus will allow more content on the SD card, more video streams, along with better battery life.) I tested the Android app from Google Play and other Android app stores and both worked fine on a Nexus 7 and a Kindle Fire.

- Can be used with Windows, Mac and Linux (more on that later).

Cons: It's not enough to warrant docking an egg, but the USB connector could be a tad better. Although the thick rubber encased flexible USB connector seems to be pretty tough, it would have been nice if it was just a half-inch longer. I sometimes found it difficult to unplug because the small USB connector doesn't provide a lot of surface area to hold on to and pulling on the case isn't a good idea.

Definitely consider using a short USB F/M extension cable (e.g. StarTech USBEXTAA6IN) if you'll be frequently plugging it in. It will save wear and tear on the Air Drive's connector, the USB ports on your computer, and to make it easier to unplug.

Other Thoughts: Here's some additional technical info I collected from PQI's manuals, website and personal testing:

- Like with a lot of smart devices nowadays, it runs Linux inside: 2.6.x kernel, vsftpd 2.0.7, Mongoose httpd 3.7, Samba 3.3.4, BusyBox telnetd

- The following network ports are active: 21, 23 , 80, 139, 445, 8080

- The default IP address for the access point is 192.168.2.1 and according to PQI there's no option to change it. Consumer routers are generally factory preset to use the 192.168.0.0/24 or 192.168.1.0/24 range so it's not likely to cause conflicts in most cases.

- If you want to change the SSID and security settings without using the Android/iOS app, point any web browser at 192.168.2.1:8080 to access a simple web-based configuration page. The WiFi password is limited to a maximum of 8 characters. WPA only.

- Because the Air Drive is running a web server, the files on the SD card can be seen using any web browser (192.168.2.1). This also means that MPlayer, VLC and other media players that support URLs can be used to stream content from the Air Drive simply by supplying the correct URL (IP address + filename).

- Access the Air Drive from a desktop or laptop via the UNC: \\192.168.2.1\Air_Drive. Guest access and no password is required. Media files are stored in a folder named "usbfd".

- Based on the network services running on the Air Drive, it's likely that PQI's Android/iOS app is using a combination of FTP and HTTP to upload/download content. The same process could be used in a web browser or a custom desktop app.

- In a pinch, it could easily be used to serve up non-interactive webpages as a portable web server.

If the Air Drive was using a microSD slot, there may be enough room to fit two slots in the case but it would be more complicated to deal with two media cards.

Although not perfect, the PQI Air Drive A100 definitely does what it's intended to do. Given it's features (some obvious, some hidden), it's essentially a portable mini NAS.

5 out of 5 eggsI THINK I REALLY LIKE THIS DEVICE!

Pros: It actually works on KINDLE FIRE HD
With very low wifi tech knowledge, I was able to use it
Not many other ways to increase data capacity on Kindle Fire

Cons: Instructions too small to read
Only just used it, so no long term input

Other Thoughts: With wifi, I am clueless. But I was very happy to get a newegg sale price and after finally sitting down to "teach" myself how to use it, it turned out to be really, really SIMPLE.

I don't know how useful it is, but for a Kindle Fire HD 7" tablet, it is a great way to have/use more data for video et al.

5 out of 5 eggsCool Little Device

Pros: Fast, easy to install. Good construction. Works well so far! I like the integrated USB connector.

Cons: Wish it had a USB port (knew that when I bought it). Also wish it would handle SD cards above 32gb (SDXC). Kind of hard to change the card (recessed and covered).

Other Thoughts: A mini NAS for my Android tablet?

This is an easy way to wirelessly serve content to my tablet. I can add recorded content to the internal SDHC card and stream the data to my Nexus 7 tablet. It works well as card reader as well (except it tries to charge itself when hooked to the tablet's OTG port.).

It is seems well built (nice finish, solid little device). The built in battery lasts a long time and is easily charged from any USB source. I use it in my RV for viewing recorded movies, television, music, and photographs.

Speed is good with N level wireless. Videos play well on my nexus but not so well on my MK808B TV dongle (somewhat choppy - I plug it into the dongle for good performance).

The PQI utility on both the android Play Store and Apple App store work well (I tested this lightly with my wife's IPhone 4. I am using the PQI Air Drive+ app.

I got it for a good price in a Shell Shocker deal. Delivery was speedy. Thanks, New Egg!

5 out of 5 eggswifi media server

Pros: I love this device. It connects to my android devices easily and will connect to a pc via network (easy on linux). You can then make it a shortcut on desktop for a one click connection via pc. It is a great way to play your videos and photos or music to many devices. It takes a 32g micro usb easliy for a fair amount of storage. Plugs into pc and becomes a drive for easy xfer of files.
It will run longer times with a small usb battery pack for a portable setup that will run many many hours. It is really a lot of fun being so small.

Cons: Range is limited as wifi is not powerful. range seems to be 60 feet or so max.
It seems to not have the bandwidth to play high bitrate 1080 hd video. I may have a slow 32g card or my pc wifi may be slow.

Other Thoughts: I may have knocked off half an egg but for the price it was well worth it.
