Whether you're a technology enthusiast or a hardcore gamer, the Samsung 470 Series Solid-State Drive can help you get more done on your PC in less time. The 470 Series allows you to boot up your computer in as little as 15 seconds and launch games and apps faster, and it uses two-thirds less power than typical hard disk drives. In addition, because the device has no moving parts--unlike traditional hard drives--it provides exceptional reliability, protecting your data from impact or mechanical failure. A brushed metal shell resists shock, and it also blocks dust and corrosion. And thanks to the included Norton Ghost software, you can transfer files to your new SSD without frustration. The Samsung 470 Series is available with 64GB, 128GB and 256GB.

  • newegg Faster Performance, Improved Multitasking With sequential read speeds of up to 250 MB/s and write speeds of up to 220 MB/s, the Samsung 470 Series Solid-State Drive allows you to spend more time doing and less time waiting. The drive also features TRIM support to ensure that write speeds won't decrease over time (note: please ensure that your computer's operating system also has TRIM support). The 470 Series also delivers improved multitasking, so that you can easily edit photos, for instance, while downloading a movie.
  • newegg Includes Norton Ghost Software The Samsung 470 comes with a full version of Norton Ghost 15.0, a disk-cloning program that makes data migration much easier. With Norton Ghost's "Copy My Hard Drive" feature, you can copy your entire system to your SSD with just a few mouse clicks. The program creates an exact copy of your original computing environment; there's no need to reinstall your OS, patches, drivers, or other programs. Norton Ghost also provides a Software Recovery Disk service, which lets you easily restore your system if it crashes--even when your OS won't start up. Customizable, event-based backup features provide additional protection against unexpected data loss.
  • newegg Solid Brushed Metal Design The Samsung 470 Series Solid-State Drive features a sturdy, brushed metal hard shell case to protect it from shock, dust, and corrosion. The lack of moving parts also makes your data less susceptible to impact than with traditional hard disk drives. And, at 2.4 ounces, the device ensures that your laptop is lightweight and easy to carry. The drive's 2.5-inch form factor is compatible with most laptops, notebooks, and desktops.
  • newegg Longer Battery Life Why be burdened with the weight of extra batteries, when you’re on the move? With the Samsung SSD 470, you gain an average of 30 minutes extra battery life per charge vs. conventional HDDs. Since it has no moving parts like old-style HDDs, the Samsung SSD 470 consumes a lot less power, resulting in a longer battery life.

4 out of 5 eggsBad Connnector Retention

Pros: Was $150 when I bought it.

Cons: SATA-II locking connectors will not "lock" on the Data Connector of this drive. Far too easyto dislodge. SATA-II cable locks on my other SATA-II drives.

Samsung "Magician" software lead something to be desired. When I followed the BIOS Update procedure, my screen was filled with giberish characters. I just entered a "yes" as two screen int he hope that the actual update process would run.

Other Thoughts: "Performence Optimitzation" took forever.

3 out of 5 eggsSamsung 470 freezes computer and it will not come out of sleep

Pros: I was initially very happy with this SSD. When it works it is nice.

Cons: However, it has had problems: it freezes the computer, which did not happen before I got it. Also, the computer will not come out of sleep at times. I have to hold the button to shut it down. Also, the screen seems to freeze, even though the computer is not running any significant task. I have an old Toshiba Satellite notebook.

Other Thoughts: There are no indications that this SSD was not compatible with my notebook. I was surprised, given the good reviews. I was going to RMA it, but waited hoping that the problem would go away or not recur. However, now, it states that this SSD is not returnable nor refundable. I video recorded its freezing and the screen remaining black, because the computer went to sleep and would not come "awake."

5 out of 5 eggsGreat stuff

Pros: Cool running, fast. Boot times much improved. My usage is mostly VM-image based, and these are vastly improved. VM startup and shutdown very fast, and running inside the VM is much snappier. 128GB is big enough for Windows, lots of installs including Visual Studio, and a large 50GB VM.

Cons: Ghost. Do NOT use the DISK TO DISK COPY! Known issues may brick your source and dest drives, an unforgivable sin for a supposed data integrity application. Use regular backup and restore. Have a Windows recovery disk handy in case you need to restore your MBR (I did), and print off the Microsoft tech note about how to rename your D: drive to the C: drive. Good luck, or buy Acronis which just seems to work.

Other Thoughts: SSD's are finally big enough and affordable enough to be mainstream. My first one was a 30GB from a couple of years ago, it was just as fast but too small to be useful. It is time for you to give serious consideration now operating system support has caught up.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive/Limited Software

Pros: It's fast and works fine in Windows 7 64-bit. Great price for performance and 3 year warranty. Scored a 7.5 in Windows.

Cons: The Samsung Magician software will only work in a 32-bit environment. I couldn't get it to do anything in compatibility mode. It doesn't see the drive in Windows 7 64-bit and you can't look at Trim or firmware version or anything. Frustrating.

5 out of 5 eggsBattery life boost an unexpected consequence

Pros: I replaced a HDD with this SSD in a low voltage laptop (ASUS UL30vt). Aside from the faster bootup times and programs, I also noticed that it gives me about 40 minutes to 1h more juice than it did before under regular usage. I haven't tried to establish exactly how much longer, though.

Cons: I miss having my entire steam library on this machine

5 out of 5 eggsFast and Stable

Pros: Spacious for a solid state disk. It isn't SATA III so speeds are nice but not stellar. Ages beyond platter-disks, I will not allow any family member to own a new pc without a solid state disk. Samsung SSD utility and Norton Ghost are nice touches to add to an already delicious piece of hardware.

Cons: Have noticed a relatively large number of lockups compared to all my other SSD's (1-2 a week), I hope for a firmware update to fix this. Although a nice touch, I would ditch Norton Ghost if it would reduce the price; compared to similar class disks this SSD is in the higher-price category.

Other Thoughts: Still would buy again, I trust Samsung's in-house SSD controller more than any generic.
