SAMSUNG 840 Series MZ-7TD120KW 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Noticeably faster than the Kingston SSDNow I upgraded from. I thought it was a great purchase at first.

Cons: None till the drive started failing after 2 months. I first noticed a blue screen of death with a page related error. Upon reboot computer would freeze up and have to be hard powered off; the same would happen booting into safe mode. Attempted to re-install Windows and could not as it would error out.

Other Thoughts: This is the first time I have ever given a product a 1 egg review. I contacted Samsung support 4 days ago, on a Sunday after attempting to use the Samsung support site, which does not work very well. Was given a number to call on Monday. Called the number, which turned out to be Seagate, not sure if they acquired SSD when they acquired Samsung's HDD business in 2011. I was unsure, so I called Samsung's main support line and was transferred to another department that was not Seagate. Call was pleasant and left me thinking this would be resolved quickly as they said they needed just a some simple info. I gave them this 3 days back and have not heard from them since. Guess I was wrong about it being resolved quickly. Still waiting and my main computer has been down and out for nearly a week now. This is concerning as I still need to get the RMA, send them my current drive and wait for them to send me a replacement. This will probably be the last Samsung product I ever buy.

Pros: The drive is fast, quiet, cool, and has much lower energy consumption than other SSDs and hard drives. The migration software was plug and play, and the cable even works with regular SATA hard drives.

Cons: The migration software will let you migrate your data from your computer to your Samsung SSD, but it will not let you migrate your data to anything else ( other SSDs, or Sata HD )

Other Thoughts: Absolutely trouble free migration. The USB to SATA cable will be a new favorite in my tool kit. The cable was plug and play on windows 7. I was able to move files to and from other SSDs and Hard Drives.

Unfortunately the Migration software is only configured to work with Samsung SSDs. Would be great if it would allow you to clone any SATA device to any SATA device.

I am now running the 840 SSDs in 2 of my laptops and 3 client laptops. Also running 6 of them in my Server.

Pros: Fast, good materials used and cheap.. it would be perfect for a laptop too because its light. When I held the SSD in my hand it felt empty on the inside

Cons: Slow write speeds

Pros: I have one it works well, but the last one i bought it was not working, i do not understand why they do not test them before packaging

Cons: new from the box I open plugged on 2 pc, does not work, i have all ready one works well but with this one i have been not lucky i had to replace with another one, I try to save money i am spending more that i thought.

Other Thoughts: - my first experience with SSD. Quite a bit faster than the mechanical drives. Windows loads very fast. Games open faster. Everything is just faster.

Easy install.
My new rig starts in under 15 sec under 30 for a restart.
Worth every penny.
Bought this based on what i heard about samsung SSD.

Other Thoughts: I use this as a boot drive with Win7 pro. This SSD blew my mind, though it is my first. Can't imagine going back to HDD.

Pros: it's a samsung ssd go it on sale for around $80.

Cons: doesn't have a very fast write time compared to some competition. my hyper 3k was significantly faster in that regard both cost me 80~. the horrid manual instructions deserve a point or two point deduction

Other Thoughts: not quite as good as the pro version, but still for what i paid it worked well as a product. samsung and the manual are another story of just pure rage enducing nonsense. it blatently tells you how to download norton gost like you will get it just for the drive, nope it doesn't. it wouldn't so bad but they have a clone program that once you register the product you can DL and use that works just perfect. this has really turned me off of samasung products. It's really that the documentation was misleading causing me to waste time.

Pros: 1. Its really small(footprint)
2. Its really light
3. Its fast

Cons: So far I havent had any problems

Other Thoughts: I bought this product 120Gb version as a update to a 2008 HP DV-7 laptop. Installed new copy of W7, also from newegg, and wow. a new life on my computer. Its laike having a brand new laptop for way less. The DV-7 has dual HD bays so I just slid my old 500Gb seagate in the secondary slot and use it for mass storage. I noted from pushing the power button to a working desktop screen is less than 38sec everytime. Its was a great purchase and I am looking to replace the old seagate with the 256gb version. I did no buy the pro version, just the regular one and it comes with Samsung migration software(did not use it) and a nice USB to SATA cable so you can clone your drive pretty easily. I could not get Vista to see the SDD when using the SATA/USB cable from samsung. Use the software from samsung it see's it fine....probably a issue with vista. A Good Buy IMO

Pros: As a boot drive on my ENVY dv6 this thing is great. Boot times are minimal, program loads and system maintenance are a snap. Replaced the OEM 7200 HDD with this and my WEI sub-score jumped from 5.9 to 7.9 w/ W8Pro.

Drive cloning with the included data migration software is quick and easy. Hardware install took less time than opening the packaging and reviewing its contents.

Active power consumption of only .07w offers longevity to battery power for laptop users and improved PSU loads for desktop applications.

Cons: The first night after installation you may accidentally refer to your girlfriend as Samsung.

Other Thoughts: I noticed some reviewers mentioned having to download the "data migration" software off of Samsung's website. My ssd had a manufacture date of Jan 2013 and included this program on the supplied v3.1 disc. It is likely that older versions of the software lacked this program and that Samsung has since rectified the situation. New purchasers should rest easy of drive cloning difficulties.

Disc volume and write speeds warrant mention. I couldn't list these as cons since I am using this as a primary drive for my OS and program files. To this end storage is sufficient and after initial installation of the OS and program files are complete write speeds become largely negligible. For those looking for a more conventional storage solution for multimedia and frequently altered files the 840Pro 256GB or 512GB versions would be a wiser, albeit more expensive, alternative.

Pick up an external enclosure for your laptops old drive. Its a cheap and easy way to address the storage restrictions of this ssd. With a host of externals cases offering SATAIII internals to USB 3.0 you wont have a problem retaining your old drives native read/write speeds for all of your non-essential files.

Pros: Fast, light weight, Samsung quality and reliability. Weighs half as much as a 64gb OCZ Agility 2 SSD. Installed Linux Mint 14 quickly with no hassle. Upgraded from a 64gb Samsung 470 because I needed more space. Boots 20% faster than the 470. Nice install kit, but I didn't need it for my laptop. Will use ithe kit with another drive in my desktop. Included some cool stickers too. Got it on sale for $20 off!

Cons: Slow write speed for SATA III, but I'm running at SATA II speed anyway. On paper, the write speed is 23% slower than the 470. I can't really tell the difference. Seems fast enough. Compared to the Samsung 830 128gb SSD, this drive is slower at SATA III speeds I guess. Don't know for sure, because all my computers are SATA II. Capacity is 120gb, compared to 128gb with the 830. Not as fast as the 840 Pro, but it's cheaper.

Other Thoughts: Didn't try the install CD. I did a fresh install of Linux, so I didn't need it. I also own 64gb and 128gb 470's, a 128gb 830 and now this SSD. I'm very happy with Samsung's SSD products.
