5 out of 5 eggsBest in the 120-128GB Class!

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 Pro Series MZ-7PD128BW 2.5" 128GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Everything, this is an exceptionally great SSD that I found on promo for $90. Faster than the 120GB 840 EVO, though not by much.

5 Year warranty.

Plenty of online documentation with instructions for everything.

This SSD ROCKS!

The 840 Pro is the King of SSD's, yet to be beaten.

Cons: Didn't have the cash to purchase the limit of 2 when on promo.

Other Thoughts: If one can get these while on promo, do so! Yes, the 850 Pro has a 10 year warranty, but the 840 Pro is proven, it's the King of SSD's & yet to be beaten over the long run.

Though the 128GB models are a bit slower, it's plenty for most who aren't dual booting or has a ton of software installed (mine has less than 30GB used). If one plans to have a lot of games stored on the SSD, go for a larger model for even more speed.

Taking care of (not babying) these SSD's will make them last a long time. Samsung has their Magician utility to help with this, but sometimes their recommendation of 200MB of page file is too little, and a warning will show. Bump it up to 512MB if so.

These will also save on battery life if in laptop, though mine is the main SSD in my Dell XPS 8700, running Windows 7 Pro, where it's going to stay.

Be sure to follow the recommendation to leave 10% unpartitioned at the end, this helps to improve lifespan, and will help keep the speed up. Run the optimizer once monthly, this is a manual TRIM, other than that, this SSD needs no pampering.

1 out of 5 eggsWorks great while it's lasts... Died after 18months

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 Pro Series MZ-7PD128BW 2.5" 128GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Okay it's a good drive while it lasts. Good speed faster boot times and all that.

Cons: Totally unreliable. If you want to blow some money for a fast drive knock yourself out. Died after 18 months. Not even using its full 6gb transfer rate. Well maintained and cool running. If you want to reformat your system when it dies fly at your own risk.

Other Thoughts: Waste of money HDD's are better. Save the money.

5 out of 5 eggsFast Boot Drive

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 Pro Series MZ-7PD128BW 2.5" 128GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: -Fast boot drive for CentOS 7.0
-Good read/write times
-Enough space for the OS and decent number of VM's on its own. If you add a second drive and split your VMs' storage use to utilize the SSD for the OS drives, one could get the better of both worlds.

Cons: -It's not 1TB at the same price :)

Other Thoughts: My current case(Lian Li) did not have 2.5" bays, so I installed it into a 3.5" with a single screw and let it float. Not a functional issue, but I wouldn't say it's what the manufacturer intended either. Wish they included 3.5-2.5 kits with it, but wouldn't consider it a con.

System setup for those that feel a review isn't complete without a list:

CentOS 7.0 KVM server
-AMD FX-8320 Vishera 8-Core 3.5GHz
-Western Digital WD Green WD20EZRX 2TB
- BIOSTAR TA970 AM3+
-G.SKILL Sniper Series 32GB (4 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866
-Corsair HX500
-Gigabyte 5770 1GB(gross overkill for its role as HDMI console adapter ;) )

1 out of 5 eggsVery poor support

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 Pro Series MZ-7PD128BW 2.5" 128GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: I've bought this ssd drive from another retailer and it worked remarkably well achieving a read speed of 557MB/s and a write speed of 460 MB/s.

Cons: Unfortunately the Samsung Magician software "upgraded" my firmware and my speeds have plummeted to 370 and 230 MB/sec (read/write).

I've contacted Samsung support and their only suggestion was to format the drive...

If you buy this drive do not install the Samsung Magician Software!!
Or even better If you want a trouble free experience try another manufacturer.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 Pro Series MZ-7PD128BW 2.5" 128GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: - 7mm (replaces other 7mm drives)
- Sustained Sequential Read and Write are about the same (not slower for one or the other)
- boots in seconds

Cons: - Not really cons, more like DUH
- BIOS configuration required
- Airflow required
- if you don't know how to setup a SSD, research, or don't waste the money. (that's what the bad reviews are)

Other Thoughts: Configure your AHCI properly, install SATA drivers during Windows Installation. Don't connect other drives until Windows is installed with all drivers.

5 out of 5 eggsNice SSD

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 Pro Series MZ-7PD128BW 2.5" 128GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Bought this over 11 months ago and have had zero problems with it meeting my expectations. This was my first SSD purchase and have been happy with my decision to (a) add an SSD to my desktop, and (b) go with the Samsung 840 Pro.

Cons: None. Just remember to leave plenty of free space on this drive and never fill it the max capacity.
