5 out of 5 eggsGreat Samsung Warranty Experience

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 Pro Series MZ-7PD256BW 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Write and Read speeds are as advertised.

Cons: Failed after 18 months, however Samsung warranty took care of it and gave me another one. And everyone lived happily ever after.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this SSD in March 2013, so this is a long-term review. Speeds were as advertised, although I'm on SATA-II so didn't see the full benefits, but even then it still hovered around 300MB/s+. Awesomely fast. There are better reviews here for benchmarks stats, so this review is about what happens when something goes wrong.

So, after 18 months of daily use (4 TB total lifetime written), it suddenly froze up during a file copy. Tried 1) freaking out, 2) disk scan for errors, 3) diskpart & reformat, 4) Secure Erase using Samsung Magician, 5) reinstall Win 7 OS, ...none of those worked. I hesitantly contacted Samsung warranty, not knowing what to expect. I shouldn't have worried -- Samsung's warranty process is painless. It's handled (in US) by Total Tech Solutions in New Jersey, and they did a great job.

Here's how it works: A quick phone call to 1-800-SAMSUNG (800-726-7864), an email exchange regarding the symptoms and serial number, and then you get a PDF shipping label. Samsung pays for free shipping both ways (overnight!); in a few days, you get another drive. You will get a technically refurbished unit, but disk checks showed only 0.4 TB written (probably just for QA checks), which is basically brand-new, and except for a sticker, it looked new.

Extremely satisfied with this purchase, so 5 eggs even after a failure. This drive performance is incredible, and if you ever get unlucky enough to do an RMA, Samsung stands behind its products and will take care of you during the 5-year warranty coverage.

1 out of 5 eggsFast while it lasted...

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 Pro Series MZ-7PD256BW 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: The good - Installed the drive and it was fast. Really fast boot times and response.

Cons: The bad - Encountered a couple of random windows reboots and BSOD. Problems started to become extremely apparent when I couldn't create a backup image of the drive. Ran a handful of drive utilities and all noticed some bad blocks on the drive . I am now outside of the 30 day return window and stuck with a defective drive.

Other Thoughts: It would really be nice if someone from Samsung saw this review and could contact me or leave information get this replaced.

5 out of 5 eggsraided

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 Pro Series MZ-7PD256BW 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: running 3 in raid0 on LSI9260-8i for virtual hard drives for VM host of 25 Virtual machines. 1.5GB/sec sustained is pretty easy, bursts of 5GB/sec due to controller cache. Copying a 2GB iso doesn't even pop up a progress bar.

Cons: maybe cost?

1 out of 5 eggsBSOD nightmare

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 Pro Series MZ-7PD256BW 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Boots quickly, thin, light weight, easily mountable

Cons: Constant BSOD for ever a year. This SSD requires a program called Samsung Magician to be able to fix its constant problems. It took almost 6 months after my purchase before a version came out to make the SSD semi stable. With its new release I am getting more BSOD's. This is the worst SSD drive on the market. I would suggest Kingston with their legendary reliability in the SSD market.

This SSD looses major performance after a fair amount of use. Google issues on the Samsung 840 series issues and you will be stunned at the issues this drive has.

I cannot fathom how this product is rated 5 eggs.

I will never use Samsung products again.

Other Thoughts: My specs
i7 4770k - No overclock
ASUS VI maximus - formula
Corsair Dominator Platinum 16GB
GTX 780 TI / GTX 260 GPU's

5 out of 5 eggsCrazy fast

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 Pro Series MZ-7PD256BW 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: -Crazy fast, use it on a gaming build
-Windows 8.1 boots in about 10 seconds and is already ready to go
-Quick responses, loading times you barely have time to notice
-So far, haven't heard a noise
-As for most SSD does not really heat
-The software is very user friendly
-Probably the best price/quality ratio you can get on the market right now

Cons: None, I think the price is very well worth it.

Other Thoughts: Looking for a gaming build? How come you still haven't bought one?
Faster than my old kingston SSD.
Will stick with samsung from now on most likely.
