Fast, Consistent Performance for Heavy Workloads

Designed for professionals and their most demanding applications, the SSD 840 PRO provides unrivaled read, write, and multi-tasking performance. It's built for the real world, with no moving parts reducing the risk of damage from shock, while using the latest in security technology including AES 256-bit encryption. Its ultra-efficient design means increased battery life.

Industry-Leading Performance for Professionals

With Samsung's 840 PRO Series SSD, everyday tasks on your desktop or laptop PC become faster and more responsive, providing workstation-class performance for seamless video editing or the ultimate gaming experience.

The 840 PRO is capable of delivering quick sequential read and write speeds--up to 540MB/s and 520MB/s respectively--for ultra-fast file transfers. In addition, the SSD features exceptional random speeds with 100K IOPS (read) and 90K IOPS (write) for the fastest real-world performance*. And it provides superior write performance for non-compressible data like images, music, videos and .ZIP files.

Precision Engineered and Built In-House

The 840 PRO Series SSD is made to provide consistent, excellent performance through its entire lifetime even under extremely heavy workloads. Like all Samsung SSDs, it is designed and built completely in-house at Samsung using the highest industry standards and advanced Samsung memory technology. And, as with other solid state drives, the 840 PRO has no moving parts, which means no hard-drive spin-ups, no noise and superior data protection**.

Increased Reliability and Security

The 840 PRO allows you to keep up with demanding workloads while safeguarding your data. Advanced AES 256-bit ATA full disk encryption provides worry-free data security. And the 4th generation Samsung MDX controller technology and firmware ensures long-term sustained performance under the most punishing conditions.

Sleek, Lightweight, and Energy Efficient

At only 7 millimeters thick and weighing just 2 ounces, the 840 PRO Series SSD has a thin, lightweight design that can make your laptop lighter to carry.

And because it contains no moving parts and it features an ultra-efficient design, it consumes little battery power, letting you enjoy up to 50 minutes more of laptop battery life than a standard hard disk drive (HDD) or competitor SSD.*** This product also supports Device Sleep mode for Microsoft Windows 8 and Haswell chipsets to help reduce power consumption.

Maintenance Software for IT Managers

Samsung's Magician software includes business-friendly features that make it easy for IT managers to manage and maintain the health of the 840 PRO Series SSD, including Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology (SMART) Support.

5 out of 5 eggsFast. Period

Pros: Very fast. Mobo didn't have any trouble reading it. OS runs smooth as butter.

Cons: Didn't come with any mounting hardware. Luckily both my case and mobo came with extra screws so i didn't have to go out and get some myself

Other Thoughts: i7 2600k
Asus Sabertooth z77
GTX 580 Classified
4x4GB Corsair XMS DDR3 Memory (1600)

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 965 @ 3.4GHz (140W)
GPU: EVGA re-branded Nvidia GeForce GTX 660
RAM: 16GB GSkill Ripjaw Z DDR3 @ 1600 (4x4GB - dual channel)
OS: Windows 7 Home (64-bit / fresh install)

Benchmarking software: HD Tune v5.50
Primary drive: Samsung 840 Pro 256GB (w/ SATAII)

Avg: 213.2MB/s
Min: 208.1MB/s
Access time: 0.096ms
Burst rate: 160.6MB/s

Cons: Is about 2x faster than my old 2x1TB Samsung Spinpoint F3 fake (motherboard) RAID0 array on paper. Although for day-to-day usage, it's not extremely noticeable.

Other Thoughts: I had several standard background programs running: a half-dozen Windows 7 gadgets, Pidgin, Skype, PeerBlock, AVG Free, FRAPS, LibreOffice quickstarter, MSI LiveMonitor.

5 out of 5 eggsA Quantum Leap

Pros: The leap in technology that the latest SSD's provide is the most exciting upgrade for a PC in years. Rarely has an upgrade made such a dramatic change in performance. You will be thrilled by the quick boot and super fast load of services, tray items and of course applications.

I've always avoided laptops because I typically have 2 instances of Visual Studio, Word, Excel, Visio, SQL Server Management Studio and a dozen smaller apps all running concurrently on my business machines. But this year I risked ordering a HP Laptop (9850-i7, 16GB RAM)... with a Samsung 840 SSD.

I was so astonished by the performance that easily exceeded all desktop workstations I've used in the past. The i7 chips in laptops are not quite as robust as the top i7's found in workstations, but the SSD made all the difference. It turned the laptop into what I consider a strong rival to most workstations. I went from loathing laptops to loving them in less than 5 minutes.

At home I have a i7 Extreme 6 core chip running with 16GB Ram on a Digital Audio Workstation. After my experience at work, I went to New Egg and purchased the same Samsung 840 Pro for it. Again....the performance just took off! Boot up is now a breeze and the machine never keeps me waiting. And as a Senior Software Developer, I have no patience after 25 years to wait for apps to open, compile or render.

The Samsung SSD really gave me a technology-rush that I haven't felt in years. These new SSD's truly represent a quantum leap in computer technology. And now that the price is less than $1/GB, the upgrade is a no-brainer. I highly recommend this upgrade.

I simply disconnected my existing dual raid 0 set up running on separate controllers. Then connected the new Samsung to my SATA 3 controller, booted with my Win 7 DVD, installed windows (lightning fast) and then proceeded to install all the drivers and apps I needed. It was an easy fresh install (for those that have the knowledge). Last I set up a single RAID 0 config with my 2 Seagate 2TB drives for additional storage for large audio files.

Don't hesitate....do the upgrade....you won't regret it.

And whatever you do, don't buy a PC, especially, ESPECIALLY....a laptop without an SSD!

Cons: None....I mean it....none!

5 out of 5 eggsDid I say crazy fast boots?

Pros: Super fast boot times - never get to see the entire Windows boot animation before it makes it to desktop.
Easy setup with clean Windows Install

Cons: Besides the price per gigabyte, none so far.

Other Thoughts: Do some searching for setting up SSD - there are many built in Windows functions that you will want to disable (indexing for one) as they are not relevant for use with SSD.
Price will come down eventually - as does everything tech...

5 out of 5 eggsTop All Rounder

Pros: Excellent software suite
Very fast
Build quality
5 year warranty
MLC NAND

Cons: Inconsistent write speeds

Other Thoughts: Running this at SATA 3 speeds in a Z77+i7 2700k+16GB based system. The 840 pro lacks the consistency of the LAMD and Marvell based solutions but it is the faster drive regardless. I was originally going to purchase the Plextor M5P for its quality, however the Samsung was on sale.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Stuff

Pros: Small, fast and quiet!

Cons: I really do not have any Cons!

Other Thoughts: I have used several other brands of SSD drives and I will totally admit that this drive actually seems faster than the other brands. The other brands are fast and snappy but this drive just seems to go over the top! As the saying goes........ once you had SSD you can never go back to a mechanical offering ever again.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome

Pros: Its a Samsung. Extremely fast drive, low power consumption, insane read/write and IOPS scores for a single drive, 7.9 in WEI. 5 year warranty.

Cons: Not gonna knock an egg off but Samsung.... no mounting bracket/adapter for computer cases? Nice sticker by the way but you coulda gave me an adapter too! It's cool though, drive is a beast.. .. love you long time.

Other Thoughts: I went from two WD 500 GB SATA II drives in RAID 0. This drive alone smokes that setup all day long. Cant wait to get a second one and stripe these puppies too.

**Make sure you flash your Motherboard BIOS first before you install this drive and enable AHCI in your BIOS settings. I was getting half the advertised read/write speeds but once I flashed my motherboard BIOS, it was all good. Windows 7 Boots in about 7-9 seconds or so. Installed Windows 7 Pro 64 bit from first dvd boot to desktop in about 8 minutes.

5 out of 5 eggsWOW!

Pros: This thing is amazing! Win 8 starts in 23 seconds & shuts down in less than half that time. Everything opens immediately and games load fast and run great. New install, I haven’t even bothered doing all the usual tweaks to make my system run faster, it’s just not necessary!
Magician software makes system changes for ssd, so you don’t have to.

Cons: Make sure “disk optimizer” in Win8 is on, Magician may have turned mine off to prevent defrag but consequently had trim turned off. Magician performance setting turns indexing on, reliability does not, read the details to make sure you have the best setting.

Other Thoughts: Notes: To prevent constant UAC magician warning w/ startup, go to “task manager” in Win8 and right click magician “startup” entry and say run as administrator.
840 Vs 840 Pro: Paying $50 more for Pro seemed very worth it; 2 more years warranty, better quality MLC memory, faster write and overall performance.
