5 out of 5 eggsFast, Quiet, Reliable

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 Pro Series MZ-7PD512BW 2.5" 512GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Once you go Solid State you won't go back. Improvement in just about every aspect of my experience with my computer. Faster load times (for textures, saves, no more random skips in heavy textured games (ie. heavily modified skyrim) Faster boot times, quiet, not hot and will last longer than my 7500 and 15000 rpm drives.

Cons: Not a one.

1 out of 5 eggsShort live span

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 Pro Series MZ-7PD512BW 2.5" 512GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: This was an incredibly fast drive while it was alive.

Cons: I purchased the drive in April and it died in December. Very unfortunate. After looking on a couple other review sites. I saw this short life span was very common in fact.

Other Thoughts: I just filled out my XRA form on Samsung. I will update this review with information on their RMA service. I haven't heard good things, but i'll keep you informed.

Pros: Great drive for the price

1 out of 5 eggsExcellent except for ...

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 Pro Series MZ-7PD512BW 2.5" 512GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: (My LOW rating is based SOLELY upon 'encryption' issues addressed in 'CONS' below. In all other areas this is a 5-STAR drive . Crypto can be SO important to many users that it alone can be THE critical issue)
Works fine in my Lenovo E545 .. removal and insertion was simple. This is a fast and solid drive, The old drive easily was imaged onto this SSD using samsung's utility (included, along with 'Magician' which is an important program too)

Cons: Serious concerns exist regarding it's encryption system. Drive is unlocked when first installed and used, and i THINK encryption is not activated until one sets a password in laptop's BIOS. These issues are only poorly addressed. One site said there's a difference in results if you set a USER password or an ADMINISTRATOR password .. Nowhere could I find any discussion of issues such as:
1) does Samsung retain any 'secret' password that could be obtained by any interested parties..
2) can one ever CHANGE one's password ..
Big fault is the near total lack of information on these matters .

Other Thoughts: The drive is said NOT to work via TrueCrypt ... and i believe it!
Until such issues are clearly and openly addressed my advice is NOT to use these SSD's where true security is needed.

5 out of 5 eggs840 Pro 512GB

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 Pro Series MZ-7PD512BW 2.5" 512GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Plug it in; it works. I have used this for windows, linux, and mac machines. This drive is fast and because it is a pro series, uses MLC which has more writes than the TLC. Coupled with the MLC memory type and Samsung's proprietary drive firmware - which is the absolute best available, it just works.

Cons: Price. Price is always a non-objective con. However, this drive has been on sales since the 850's have come out and its been a steal at over 40% off. I have just ordered another one if these drives but I have no real need for it. I already have all the space from the 10+ drives hdd and ssd I have but this product is not perishable so I can save it for a year and it will still be new. Why? Well, the pro version of these drives is like the luxury model of a car. And luxury models have more tech and better tech than the 3-4 year future model of a cheap version.

This means, this older 840 pro model is already better than the cheap 850 consumer model. Just look at the specs and it will be clear.

Other Thoughts: I have tried Intel and before they went to sandforce (think bargain basement quality), they were good. Since then, it has been Samsung and todays purchase will be #10. They all work, no errors, no issues at all. But I do not buy the cheap stuff so that means I always get high quality components.
