5 out of 5 eggsHappy with my purchase

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE250BW 2.5" 250GB SATA 6Gb/s 1x nm Samsung Toggle DDR 2.0 3-Bit MLC NAND Flash Memory (400Mbps) Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: - Fast load times
- Small form factor (fits anywhere)
- Amazing price for a SSD.

Cons: - You get the hard drive... nothing more.
Be sure to have a spare SATA cable beforehand.

- Doesn't come with a bracket to slide it into a drive bay.
Honestly, not that much of a con as it is pretty easy to tuck it out of sight.

Other Thoughts: These things are well worth the hype. SSD are not cheap, but this was definitely an affordable upgrade that did wonders for my aging rig. With a couple of internal drives I use to store much of my movies and music, 250GB is a pretty reasonable size for just programs and OS.

I play BF4 on some old hardware -- even my CM Storm Scout case isn't even available on newegg anymore and I rather not say much more than my EVGA 270 GTX struggles and my CPU... 2.6Ghz just doesn't do it anymore.

Map load times on my 7200rpm HHD: I could use the restroom, make some food, read a book, and when I sat down would still enjoy a minute of a loading screen with bright orange streaks across my screen in typical battlefield fashion. (never truly timed it, but I know it was over 3 minutes to be completely honest)

This SSD loads at a fraction of the time: (25 seconds if I just load up the game, even faster for the next map).

It still amazes me how big of a change it really was. Enough to make me happy until my next newegg shipment comes in and I give my rig the much needed upgrades it has long needed,

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing!

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE250BW 2.5" 250GB SATA 6Gb/s 1x nm Samsung Toggle DDR 2.0 3-Bit MLC NAND Flash Memory (400Mbps) Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: As soon as I took it out of the box, it was incredibly light. Felt like it weighed the same as a think piece of plastic, but it was blazing fast once installed. It boosted up my windows rating from 5.9 to 6.4. And my hard drive went to the max window index of 7.9. Windows 7 loaded in about 5-8 seconds and was ready for work.

Cons: Sooo light, some people might love that though. Kinda felt cheap as well.

5 out of 5 eggsSamsung 840 EVO Installed in Older Laptop

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE250BW 2.5" 250GB SATA 6Gb/s 1x nm Samsung Toggle DDR 2.0 3-Bit MLC NAND Flash Memory (400Mbps) Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Significant performance increase even with a SATA II connection.
Relative ease of hdd cloning and sdd installation.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Replaced a 500 Gb HDD with a 250 Gb Samsung 840 EVO on a Dell XPS 1645 laptop. Researched installation on web and cleaned and defraged HDD first prior to cloning. Included cloning software worked well.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat hard drive.

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE250BW 2.5" 250GB SATA 6Gb/s 1x nm Samsung Toggle DDR 2.0 3-Bit MLC NAND Flash Memory (400Mbps) Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: This was a solid performing hard drive for a good value.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I was really impressed at how the drive performed in real world tasks - gaming, software developing, random file access. Definitely a good drive for the money.

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE250BW 2.5" 250GB SATA 6Gb/s 1x nm Samsung Toggle DDR 2.0 3-Bit MLC NAND Flash Memory (400Mbps) Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Fast & from established & trusted brand name. This drive was a no hassle upgrade using the cloning software available for free download from Samsung's website. I/O per second one of the highest in SSD market. Caught it on sale in the neighborhood of 150 dollars in spring 2014 so it was a good price for a 240 GB of this quality. Went from a Crushal C300, to a Crushal M4 (intentional mispelling to comply with review Guidelines) , then upgraded to this Samsung which is noticeably faster than my previous 2 SSD's. I think the 840 EVO will provide sufficient performance for my system for the foreseeable future.

Cons: None really, however I feel that as inexpensive as it would be to the manufacturers, that all SSD's should be packaged with a durable 2.5" to 3.5" adapter. After all, probably well over 50% of SSD purchases go into Desktop systems which have no 2.5" drive bays.

Other Thoughts: My system:
Intel P67 chipset
Intel Core i5 2500K cpu
Windows 7 - 64-bit w/ SP1

Be sure to check your performance ratings before installing the Samsung Magician software which is available for free download in addition to the drive cloning tool. I tested as part of the Windows 7 Experience index performance rating before installing the Samsung Magician drive optimization software and it rated 7.9. After installing Samsung Magician the Windows score dropped to 7.2 which baffled me because detailed benchmarks using HDtune software showed a 50+ MB per second increase in read speed after Samsung Magician was installed and all settings were set for maximum performance. Just offering my observations. You decide which drive performance assessment that you trust.

1 out of 5 eggs"Security features" are garbage

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE250BW 2.5" 250GB SATA 6Gb/s 1x nm Samsung Toggle DDR 2.0 3-Bit MLC NAND Flash Memory (400Mbps) Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: As far as basic features go, this drive is great. It's cheaper and at least marginally faster than most competing SSDs (as of August 2014).

Cons: The advanced features on this drive are pretty poorly implemented. The average user will not be able to get “secure erase” to work. And don't even think about turning on self-encryption: I've worked in IT for five years and I can't get it to work.

The “Secure erase” feature doesn't work on about 50% of computers. It will boot your computer into a screen with garbled text options that you can't read. And even the text does display correctly for you, there's a good chance that in the process of secure-erasing, it will ask you to open your computer and unplug the drive WHILE THE COMPUTER IS ON. This seems slightly dangerous (and physically impossible for some laptops).

As for self-encryption: It is garbage. Just the fact that it requires a secure erase means that most users will not be able to get it working, but it also has weird hardware requirements: You either need a motherboard that supports setting an ATA hard drive password (most motherboards don't, and this will slow your drive down anyway), or you need a Trusted Platform Module (which almost no computer has). And if you go with the TPM, you also need to buy expensive third-party software unless you're using Windows 8 or higher. The product description does not mention these requirements anywhere, either here or on Samsung's website.

And even if you go out of your way to meet the hardware and software requirements for self-encryption, it is a HUGE pain to set up, because the support and documentation for it is practically nonexistent. The official documentation is literally two sentences long, and when I talked to Samsung support, I knew more about the self-encryption than they did.

Other Thoughts: Basically, this drive is great if you only care about speed, but it's horrible if you want to use any of the advanced features. If an IT guy can't get the self-encryption to work, the average user doesn't stand a chance.

5 out of 5 eggsGet the Right Cable

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE250BW 2.5" 250GB SATA 6Gb/s 1x nm Samsung Toggle DDR 2.0 3-Bit MLC NAND Flash Memory (400Mbps) Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Super fast, intuitive installation software, easy to install once you get the right cable to clone old HDD.

Cons: None, once you get the right cable to clone the drive. Wish it had come with one or Newegg had listed the SSD-USB cable requirement as an add-on.

Other Thoughts: My Toshiba Portege laptop has an eSATA/USB combo port which I thought would give me faster cloning so I bought an SSD-eSATA cable. Wouldn't recognize drive no matter what I did. Nothing in Samsung or Toshiba literature or even Newegg questions specified using a USB 2.0 cable. With help from Neweggers, I learned that eSATA didn't provide power. I got a USB-SSD cable for 8 bucks and now I'm enjoying a snappy SSD. Thanks to Sean and Paul and the Newegg community!
