2 out of 5 eggsDoesn't work with any dynamic partition hard drive

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE250BW 2.5" 250GB SATA 6Gb/s TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Fast, small, reasonable price

Cons: The Magician and Data migration softwares Absolutely NOT work with any hard drives that have "dynamic partition". I learned this hard way as Samsung never claims this deficiency in its softwares. The Data migration software can NOT see the Win7 C drive which is dynamically partitioned (not basic Win7 partition), and hence can NOT migrate Win7 OS to the Samsung SSD. This means I can't use this SSD and its Data migration software to clone my Win7 OS onto the Samsung SSD.
How do you know that you have "dynamic partition" hard drive. Right click "Computer", Choose "Manage", and then click "Disk Management" under "Storage" on the left panel. If you see army green color above all your partition drives, they are "dynamic partition". If they are blue color, they are "basic partition", and the Samsung softwares will work. If you use any 3rd party partition program, I believe all of their partitions are dynamic partition. If you use the Win7 built-in partition tool, then it is basic partition. Correct me if I would be wrong.

Fortunately, I have another desktop PC with Win 7 basic partition. So, I use that PC for this Samsung SSD.

Another problem encountered during handling 2 Win7 OS (one cloned into the Samsung SSD plus the original Win7 OS in the original HDD). With both drives connected to the motherboard, and then boot my PC up. I had to get into the BIOS during booting to set the boot priority to the new Samsung SSD. Then, I reformat the original Win7 drive in the original HDD and turn it into another data drive.

Other Thoughts: Samsung must have the obligation to inform potential customers that its migration softwares (Magician) does NOT have any magician power over dynamic partition hard drive.
I would give **** if its softwares would work with dynamic partition hard drives. Since Samsung doesn't make this issue clear at all, I give only **.

5 out of 5 eggsHow to Make It Work

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE250BW 2.5" 250GB SATA 6Gb/s TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: See "Other Thoughts" below for hints getting it to work when upgrading from an existing hard drive.

Cons: Many users seem disappointed with Samsung's vague instructions and lack of telephone tech support.

Other Thoughts: Hints for upgrading from your existing hard drive to a new SSD:
1. Connect the drive as a new, empty drive to your computer.
2. Power on and go immediately into the BIOS setup screen. Locate the SATA settings and make sure that SATA mode is set to "AHCI". Then Save and Exit the BIOS.
3. After booting up, use Windows' Disk Management to "initialise" the new SSD drive. This ensures the drive will be recognised. No need to format the drive; your cloning software will handle that.
4. Use Samsung Magician Software (installed on your existing hard drive) to update the SSD's firmware. Make sure power to the computer is not interrupted during the firmware update. After updating the firmware, re-start the computer if requested to do so.
5. Now, clone your Windows system from the existing hard drive onto the new SSD. If you don't trust Samsung's own cloning software try using the excellent EaseUS ToDo free backup software which has a drive clone/copy option which optimises for SSD at the same time. Apricorn EX-Gig software is another good option, also free.
6. *IMPORTANT* - After cloning, restart the computer and immediately go into the BIOS setup screen. In the "Boot" section of the BIOS be sure to select the new SSD as the "1st Boot Device". Many installations fail because users forget to make this change in the Boot settings. Also, remove the old hard drive from the Boot device list. Save and Exit from the BIOS.
7. Your computer should now boot up into Windows on the new SSD, and it should be significantly faster than before.
8. Come back to this page on Newegg.com and write a review about how great your new SSD is after following these steps for installation.

5 out of 5 eggsLightning fast and cheap

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE250BW 2.5" 250GB SATA 6Gb/s TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: I bought two of those to put in RAID0 in my rig. It goes lightning fast and I bought them in special at 140$ which was really a bargain.

Cons: Power and SATA connectors seem a bit loose/cheap, but had no problem with them.

Other Thoughts: It totally chumps my previous Intel 330 I bought in end of 2012. I had a RAID0 setup of those. According to userbenchmark.com, the following Read/Write/Mixed Sequential benchmarks gave 936/258/3454. The Samsungs gave 1036/921/967! I know we talk about a two-years difference models, but I still believe you should grab those when they go down in special

4 out of 5 eggsGood- Hard to Setup

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE250BW 2.5" 250GB SATA 6Gb/s TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Everything as promised, fantastic performance, incredible boot time etc.

Cons: I would have liked to have seen a software package to come with the drive. I was running a 500GB HDD on my computer prior to the installation of this SSD. I used the software 'CloneZilla' to image my current partition on the HDD to copy over to my SSD. I ran into all sorts of problems most importantly transferring windows... I eventually solved this by booting from the SSD with the HDD disconnected and repairing the windows from the image now on the SSD....

Other Thoughts: Overall very satisfied, relieved i could solve the problem, worried for others who may have the same issue.

4 out of 5 eggsSamsung 840 EVO 250GB SSD

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE250BW 2.5" 250GB SATA 6Gb/s TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: excellent value: paid $123 for 250GB brand name SSD
achieves advertised throughput under benchmarks

Cons: boots linux slower than older OCZ Vertex it replaced.

Other Thoughts: This drive takes a few seconds longer to boot Ubuntu 14.04 than my OCZ Vertex 4 purchased over a year ago. With the OCZ, machine booted up nearly seemingly instantaneous; under 4 seconds. With the Samsung, boot times are still very fast, but had to deduct an egg as it boots noticeably slower than year old technology. Could be it isn't optimal with Linux or my ASRock Extreme 4 motherboard. Drive is extremely fast though once booted.

5 out of 5 eggsNew life for an old laptop

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE250BW 2.5" 250GB SATA 6Gb/s TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Installed in an old core i3 (first gen) laptop with 8 GB RAM and a WD Black, 7200 RPM drive. Booting to Win 7 took minutes (about 5).
With the SSD installed, it boots in 20 seconds. Everything is FAST...and it's only a SATA II connection.

Cons: Can't think of any.

Other Thoughts: An easy and inexpensive way (relatively speaking) to add new life to an old laptop. Best upgrade possible. Will use one in the desktop soon. The data migration software worked fine and it didn't take long at all (although I did use a Esata connection [best feature about the laptop]). ;-)

5 out of 5 eggsSAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE250BW

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE250BW 2.5" 250GB SATA 6Gb/s TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Perfect for OS boot up/shutdown/restart
around 20-30sec from windows bootup
shutdown about 20sec or less
restart can be over 30sec to 1min avg

Fresh SSD OS
start up - less than 20 sec
shut down - less than 15sec
restart - less than a minute

everyone will experience different result. hope this is useful.

It's really fast for those looking for cutting down waiting time for every application on windows.

Cons: slight pricey, but worth it. Price on SSD are gradually getting cheaper, not as super expensive over 2yrs ago.

it only comes with software Samsung Migration, you might want to download Samsung Magician from their site or another source. both softwares are great for those who are looking for better use of Samsung SSD.

Other Thoughts: Those who are doing video editing or recording, will not recommend 250gb Samsung, it'll use up space really fast. For those that wants to use SSD, will recommend 500gb or higher SSD, if money is not an issue Raid0 500gb or bigger space x2 will be great set up, along with backup HDD.
