5 out of 5 eggsWhat do I know...but for me it's wonderful

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO 2.5" 500GB SATA III TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-7TE500BW

Pros: Blistering fast

Cons: Firmware update not compatible with Win 10 as far as I can tell. I have yet to successfully download and install updates. Error every single time, though the software works as is. I have yet to experience the failures and clogs others have written about. But given the frequency of problems expressed I suppose I'm a probability and outcome passenger at this stage.

Other Thoughts: My system boots from Power On to Login in 15 seconds. So that includes the BIOS post. Running the Samsung SSD along with some 2T HDDs, AMD FX 6300 (stock clock speed; may play with OC but I don't need it to sing Kumbaya), Corsiar H105 cooler, 32G GSkill Ripjaws X DDR3 1800 (4 x 8G), XFX Radeon R9 285 GPU, Asus Sabertooth 990FX R2.0 mobo, NZXT H630 cave. Idle at 23c, load at 44c with otherwise stock fans in the cave. Some items I bought as refurbs, but bought all at Newegg.

This is my first build ever. I had swapped some parts out of an ancient Dell E310 box in the past, but never anything other than outpatient surgery, so I was quite the bit unsure if I could get all my specs correct, assembled and running. All very stable, and for my needs, blistering fast. For me this wasn't a quick build - doing it for the first time I was deliberately slow and still had some mistakes along the way - but now that I have it, I am basking in the non-glow of my non-glowing components, save the cooler. I was meticulous about cord management, and feel like the machine looks like it was built by someone who knew what they were doing, even though I really don't.

In the coming weeks I plan to double up the GPU, swap out the FX 6300 for an FX 9370, and add a couple more fans to the cave, as I like the idea of a meat locker environment, to mix my metaphors. I won't do a full liquid loop because I suck even more at plumbing. The CPU swap-out has method to its madness: stepson desperately needs to update his gaming rig, and at 13, he will be delighted with his new FX 6300 machine and likely fancier GPU than mine. I will inculcate him into the happy planet that is a cold cave for a box.

Did I achieve overkill? Yes. Is it future proof? For a while. Why did I build it? Because I wanted to, and because I could.

One thing's certain: I now have more confidence in this sort of endeavor. Total waste of money but some day I will build a dual CPU 32 core beast. Not because I need one - I never will - but rather because I want a Ferrari and can't have one. This will be my Ferris Bueller 'sooo choice' moment...

5 out of 5 eggsStill Fast!

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO 2.5" 500GB SATA III TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-7TE500BW

Pros: Been using this 840 evo 500gb SSD for more than a year now, my pc is still very fast. Medium-light daily usage, nothing heavy.

Still boots up in under 7 sec. Still reads and writes at about 300 MB/s (Note it is limited by my old motherboard with SATA 2 ports).

Works perfectly with Windows 10 after the upgrade, no issues at all. Boots even faster than windows 7 and 8.1 did. I love this thing.

Cons: None!

Other Thoughts: I had a small issue with the samsung magician software. Gave an error on startup, a simple update to the latest version fixed it in 3 minutes. Easy.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfectly Perfect

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO 2.5" 500GB SATA III TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-7TE500BW

Pros: Fast, fast, fast. Love it.
Comes with drive copy software.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Really liked these Samsung SSDs and they came with drive copy software, which others do not. Makes it easy to swap out old drive for your new faster SSD!

1 out of 5 eggsDead drive

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO 2.5" 500GB SATA III TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-7TE500BW

Pros: Fast drive, while it was working

Cons: Drive suddenly died and now shows up as 0GB in BIOS. Sending to Samsung for replacement.

1 out of 5 eggsNot working with Windows 10

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO 2.5" 500GB SATA III TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-7TE500BW

Pros: Fast, when it works

Cons: Problems installing windows 10. Installed on a HDD and tried to update the firmware, now it wont recognize the drive. The samsung website sucks for support.

Other Thoughts: There are 2 different RMA/Warranty sections, of course both do not work. I had to send an email to see about getting this drive RMA'd.

1 out of 5 eggsGreat drive, bad service

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO 2.5" 500GB SATA III TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-7TE500BW

Pros: The driver is very fast and reliable, when everything is working correctly.

Cons: Beware: This drive has some performance bugs, and it slows down over time. They've released a fixed firmware for the drive, but it speeds up the drive at the cost of long-term reliability. By itself, the cost to reliability is acceptable, but...

Samsung Magician software is not fully compatible with Windows 10, and I can't re-enable RAPID on the drive to properly make performance comparisons to verify that the issue is now resolved.

To make matters worse, Samsung support is pretty bad. I just spend an hour on the phone, but redirected 3 times, and each time the person on the phone sent me to the wrong place. The last person I got told me, after wasting about 10 minutes of my time trying to find a ticket number I told them didn't exist repeatedly, finally told me that I had again been sent to the wrong department, and that the hard drive department closed 5 minutes prior.

Further, inquiries on Samsung's facebook have gone unanswered.

I love Samsung products, but this support experience was completely unacceptable.

Other Thoughts: I acknowledge that software isn't going to all be 100% compatible once a new OS comes out, but for a large company like Samsung with such a reputation for quality screws things up this badly, something is really wrong. It's not like Windows 10 came out from nowhere and software wasn't supplied for testing. I can go back almost 6 months in a google search and find people reporting this issue.

The phone experience, however, was really the icing on this cake. Samsung, please fix your support process... it's horribly broken.

5 out of 5 eggsGood drive for a 2012 13" MacBook Pro

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO 2.5" 500GB SATA III TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-7TE500BW

Pros: I've used this in my 2012 13" MacBook Pro, and it's worked out rather well. Upgraded the RAM to 16 GB, and that notebook should last me another couple of years before I feed the need to upgrade.

Cons: N/A

4 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO 2.5" 500GB SATA III TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-7TE500BW

Pros: Super speedy when it was new.

Cons: Considerably slow after a year, but that may be due to filling up.

Other Thoughts: Not sure where the slow down is coming from, but windows 10 and a reformat is almost here so we'll see. Also occasionally when i sit down at my pc there will be the "are you sure you want to exit" popup from the samsung magician software without trying to close it so I don't know whats up with that.

2 out of 5 eggsWorks great while it lasted.

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO 2.5" 500GB SATA III TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-7TE500BW

Pros: Works great while it lasted. Software was useless to me. Price was in a good range.

Cons: Failed after 5 months of use. Good thing was it didn't completely fail. It would work for about 2 minutes before it cause a blue screen. Enough time for me to back up my data...rinse and repeat. this is the second Samsung SSD drive that had failed on me.

Other Thoughts: The only thing Samsung got me on is the $$ per GB for their SSD lineups, but so far it is proving to be more of a headache than it's worth.
