5 out of 5 eggsWorks well

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE500BW 2.5" 500GB SATA III TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: It's my primary for fast boot and it does just that. Built with an I7, Sabertoothe Z97 MB and 16g Ripsaw mem. Boot time to Win 8 is about 30 sec. Launch and run Google Earth in seconds.

Cons: none so far

3 out of 5 eggsCheap and fast, but for how long?

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE500BW 2.5" 500GB SATA III TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Reasonably fast.
At the time, low cost per GB

Cons: These units had the bum firmware that caused read slowdowns on old data. Both my drives were affected. Boot times slowed down to half of what they were when they were new in ~4 months.

Other Thoughts: Updating the firmware and reorganizing all the blocks in Linux took ~13 hours per drive. That was insane! The jury's still out on whether or not the update permanently fixed the problem, as one of them still feels a touch sluggish. Note that I haven't done any benchmarking, this is just gut feel.

Probably won't buy another Samsung TLC SSD until long after they've been out a while. The MLC Evo Pro doesn't appear to have this problem.

5 out of 5 eggsUltra-fast SSD Goodness!

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE500BW 2.5" 500GB SATA III TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: My boot times went from 45 seconds on an old platter drive to 15 seconds, and I am sure it would be faster in a newer system. My computer is an HPE-380t bought back in 2010. I seriously do not know how I lived through the slow speeds of a platter before this SSD.

Cons: The only thing I can think of is it could be cheaper, but is still well worth the price I paid for it.

Other Thoughts: I will definitely be buying more Samsung products in the future!

1 out of 5 eggsDrive failure after 4 months

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE500BW 2.5" 500GB SATA III TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: It was fast while it worked.

Cons: The drive started showing the "age" slowdown problem that the 840 EVO drives exhibit (google for explanation.) You will find an explaination of the problem on a lot of the tech. sites.

After 4 months I could not boot from drive.

Other Thoughts: I would not buy this drive. I also would be hesitant to by any Samsung SSD.

1 out of 5 eggsDo not buy this SSD!

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE500BW 2.5" 500GB SATA III TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: NONE!

Cons: Do not buy this SSD!

Samsung refuses to fix a very obvious hardware design flaw in this SSD which causes data read speeds to slow as the data ages on the drive. Don't believe me? Check out the 237 page thread over at Overclock.net. They need to recall this SSD and give everyone refunds!

Other Thoughts: If I could give this product less than 1 egg, I would. It doesn't even deserve one egg.

1 out of 5 eggsDON'T BUY IT!

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE500BW 2.5" 500GB SATA III TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Incredibly fast for those first two months you own it. After that, you're going to have to run the Samsung Performance Restoration tool every two or three months to restore its speed.

Cons: Don't buy it! The 840 EVO series is plagued with performance issues that aren't present in the 850 line. You can Google about it if you don't believe me. There's even a petition for Samsung to do something. When this issue was discovered, Samsung promptly released a tool called "Samsung Performance Restoration" and I thought it fixed my issue. But after two months, the issue popped up again for everyone and Samsung announced that they're working on it and I'm still waiting for an update with that. And since I bought two of these and have them setup at RAID0, you have to break/disable your RAID and then run the tool (DOS version only if you have the OS installed on them like me). It's incredibly inconvenient and a huge flaw that somehow wasn't picked up during quality control.

Other Thoughts: Don't buy this SSD unless you want to have a headache with it.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE500BW 2.5" 500GB SATA III TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Fast boot, Fast read/write, great boot drive.

Cons: Installing O/S (Windows 7 64bit) was challenging until I figured out how to do it (see Other Thoughts).

Other Thoughts: This is a great drive, Machine is booted in about 11 seconds, and that includes raid controller config screen that I have not gotten around to bypassing yet.

The problem I had installing Windows 7 was due to this drive being formatted as a "GPT" drive and not "MBR". When trying to install windows it would not select the drive even if I formatted it. I looked around a little and found that it was because the drive was formatted as "GPT". If you have this issue the fix is very easy. In the Windows installation UI when you are on the drive selection screen, simply click the "Delete" button on the Samsung 840 EVO drive. This will leave the drive at an "Unallocated" status. From there you can then click "Format" and once complete you will be able to select it as the install drive.

I'm not giving a star off for this because GPT is a newer valid drive format and I'm not sure if users installing Windows 8 or 10 for that matter will have the same issue. Other than that this drive is great and I would recommend it.
