1 out of 5 eggsWas great, while it worked

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE1T0BW 2.5" 1TB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Very fast drive. If you blink you'll miss your computer booting up.

Cons: The drive will randomly stop working. After 30-60 minutes, the drive seemingly just either slows down to a crawl or stops reading/writing entirely. When an app goes to use the disk, it will hang infinitely. The only solution is to shutdown and turn the computer back on.

The price doesn't help either.

5 out of 5 eggsOver the top

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE1T0BW 2.5" 1TB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Samsung's rapid mode is really really good. I bought another brand last year, a 512gb, it was considered the fastest at the time ... a year later this is faster 2X times larger and the Samsung magician makes settings changes required for windows to take full advantage of ssd's a super buy. (got a free game at the time of purchase) in rapid mode it like access times as fast as your memory. using it as a working drive for games, Movie making- Photoshop and the renders are super fast
and a 3 year warranty. pretty sweet. even at over 50 full still fast where my 512 has slowed due to over 50% full so Props to Samsung great product

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: hmmm SSD 1TB <$400 cause I got it during the holiday sales still being in the low 400's still a good deal should have bought 2

5 out of 5 eggsMacbook 13 inch Aluminum Late 2008 Upgrade

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE1T0BW 2.5" 1TB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: We sent our daughter to college in spring of 2009 with this Macbook. It originally had 2x1GB DDR3 memory and a 5400 RPM 160 GB drive. I upgraded the drive once already to a 7200 RPM 500 GB. She had been mentioning that the system was running slowly around Christmas, so I ask her if she wanted me to do an upgrade on it for her present. I told her it would be like new again. I purchased the Samsung 840 1TB drive as well as CORSAIR 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 1066 (PC3 8500) Memory for Apple Model CMSA8GX3M2A1066C7. Since it is a Macbook, I decided to backup her files to a NAS, and then just perform a new OSX Yosemite installation and then install bootcamp for windows.

She loves it. Boots extremely quickly, and has plenty of RAM now so it doesn't need to swap.

Cons: Not really any cons, but I have a lot of gear at home like cable converters and such, so I don't usually have problems doing upgrades since I do them for a living, but see my other thoughts below for what might be considered a con and how to do the upgrade.

Other Thoughts: Before installing the drive, I connected it to my Dell notebook that I use for work, and I did firmware updates etc on the drive. You'll want to do this for performance. Whenever I do an install on Solaris, Linux, Windows, etc... I always update all the firmware first. I had an eSATA port on my Dell, and I rigged an old power supply to the drive to provide power to it. Then install the migration and magician software, get latest drive firmware updates and installed. (There is one in particular that addresses a performance issue after data has been on the drive for a long time that impacts it quite a bit from what I read)

5 out of 5 eggsEasy and Quick

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE1T0BW 2.5" 1TB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: The installation and cloning of my old hard drive was relatively painless. Having a power wire harness come apart while moving around the old HD's was the most difficult part of the install.

Cloning 669 GB's from my original HD in 2hr 45min was much quicker than I thought; Magician's original estimate was for 3 hr 46min.

Load times for games are MUCH, much quicker.

Office programs and antivirus scans are INSANELY fast now.

Cons: You need to tweak some settings in BIOS. Rapid mode was not available until Magician updated; a bit strange.

Using standard HD's is torture after you get used to a good SSD.

Other Thoughts: You need to activate ACHI mode in BIOS to get this thing to do what you really want it to do. Also, inspect your motherboard closely for SATA 6BG/s connections, your original HD may be hooked up to a slower SATA connection: It is very important you use the fastest connection available; AND activate it in BIOS.

My order of operations:

1. Inpspect MB for fastest SATA connection and use it
2. Clone
3. Unplug old HD
4. Change BIOS (activate ACHI mode as well) to use new SSD
5. Boot
6. Run Magician's Optimizer
7. Activate Magician's Rapid Mode
8. Play some games and enjoy!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat SSD

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE1T0BW 2.5" 1TB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Benchmark tool shows actual performance very close to advertised. Noticeably faster than my previous SATA III SSD. Purchased the 1TB so I could load all games on boot drive, glad I did. Games load much faster now. Have 2 magnetic disc HDD's for storage, will replace them with another Samsung 840EVO for storage.

Cons: Came with latest firmware but no "Rapid mode" option, not that I needed it. Will not knock an egg for this because drive works well enough for me.

Other Thoughts: One of the least expensive 1TB SATAIII SSD's out there but works as advertised. Glad I did not drop the extra $$$ for something that may or may not have worked a tad bit better. Run, don't walk, to your nearest SSD store & buy this product...

5 out of 5 eggsWhoa!!!

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE1T0BW 2.5" 1TB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Its fast. Lots of storge.

Cons: None yet. Some people claim to have had RMA Nightmares. Its expensive, but not rediculous.

Other Thoughts: I was going to get the 500 until I saw this bundled with a bunch of other stuff I already had in my cart. With the package savings I couldnt say no to this big boy. My boot times are like lightning and I dont even have time to read the hints on my games loading screens! I'm very impressed.

1 out of 5 eggsDouble Failure

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE1T0BW 2.5" 1TB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Cost for 1 TB

Cons: Complete failure, disappears from BIOS

Other Thoughts: Purchased two of these at different times and both failed immediately. Did a clean install of Windows from DVD and both drives were no longer recognized by BIOS after first reboot. Google search looks like this is a common problem. Currently working through RMA process, but I am not optimistic. Meanwhile, the Crucial M500 960GB drive in my system is working flawlessly.
