5 out of 5 eggsImpressive!

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-MTE500BW mSATA TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: The very low power consumption, the great price, and connection types and storage choices got my attention with Samsung SSDs.
At a fraction of the power over the other brands, with equal or better performance. I had to give these a shot. I got a SATA 500GB SSD as well as one of these mSATA and the both have been as perfect as you can imagine!

Unlike other brand SSD, my SATA worked in many different enclosures without any problems. USB 2 and 3. I throw this out there because other brand doesn't care and if you had to deal with them because the drive you got didn't perform like a SSD should (2+ minute reboot times) then this bit of information is important to you.

The Samsung SATA I got replaced other brand (The 2+ minute reboot time 512GB SSD) and the Samsung fixed all issues and ran beautifully! I'm back to under 20 seconds now.

The mSATA I gambled on because I never used one before. I'm tickled to say it was just as beautiful and it as well fixed all the problems other brand (When I bought the 512GB SSDs from other brand, I got 2 of them and both were horrible)

If you've played with SSD drives and know you need Windows 7 or above (No Tweaking Required unlike previous OS) and you know about putting it in AHCI mode and you know how to use the search engine to get help if you need it, then you shouldn't have any problems with this brand. (User Errors and Computer Guy errors, maybe, but the drives gave me no problems.)

Cons: For this mSATA, I have no complaints. Laptop manufacturers should include a screw for when you use this slot, but they don't always do that. So I understand those that didn't have a screw handy, finding that to be a con. I had a screw and didn't need one. (I'm one of the lucky ones, I know!)

For the SATA version, there is a lot of wasted space in the case! I seen one of these taken apart on the net and They could easily fit 3 maybe even 4 TB worth of chips in the same little case.

I look forward to seeing 4TB SSD drives!

Other Thoughts: AHCI mode needs enabled. (If you forget about this, like I almost did, then this tip is for you.)

If you clear your BIOS (Accident or on purpose) then you may need to disconnect this drive to get into BIOS and re-enable AHCI. My motherboard thought a nice little button in the back would be a convenience so you didn't have to remove battery, play with jumper, etc. to clear the bios! And when I was trying to plug in my Fiber Optic cable and thought that little button was the hole it was suppose to plug into! It took me a half hour to trouble shoot my "Opps!" and get back up and running!

If you got stuck with a horrible drive (And you know this because you've tested them (Because you got more than one when they were on sale, and the issues happen in more than three different machines and a bunch of other brand SSD drives don't have said issues) and need a REAL SSD drive to impress you.

This should do it. (I'm saying this after using 3 different brands in my HTPC and all were SATA connections. The laptop that took this mSATA is a first in using an mSATA and it just worked as great as the SATA. Just smaller and leaving the SATA bay for another SSD.)

5 out of 5 eggsWorks

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-MTE500BW mSATA TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Boosts boot time from minutes to seconds. Big enough for a straight clone without having to worry about transferring entertainment data.

Cons: A little pricey.

Other Thoughts: Was able to clone my 5400 laptop spinning disk without any problems. Laptop will load from this drive, but requires booting from boot menu (F12) every time. Not sure whats going on there. I changed the boot order in BIOS but still seems to want to boot from the old disk and blue screens if I don't hit F12 fast enough.. Not this drives fault. Just thought I'd throw that out there incase other people encounter and panic.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Boot drive

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-MTE500BW mSATA TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Small, stable and reliable mSATA drive with a large enough capacity to handle boot functions of Windows 8 and installation of all my games. Frees the 2.5" drive bay to house a larger spinning disk for data or alternative OS.

Cons: IMO, all SSD drives are too expensive. Other than that this drive has worked perfectly since it was installed.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat SSD

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-MTE500BW mSATA TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: + Sufficient storage capacity for most uses
+ Very good performance
+ High endurance, eliminates concerns about wearing out the drive
+ Supports AES-256 hardware encryption
+ Low idle and busy power consumption

Cons: - Unlike some competing drives (Crucial / Micron M500 and M550) it does not have capacitors to ensure writes complete if power is lost

Other Thoughts: This was an impulse purchase for me since Newegg was selling the drive at 40% off -- I didn't really need it, but I have a Samsung Series 9 Ultrabook that is used for video capture and editing, and the extra capacity would be nice to have.

The Ultrabook came with a 256GB Samsung OEM SSD that was a decent but not spectacular performer, and not supported by their Drive Magician software so the firmware couldn't be updated.

I swapped the drives then cloned the old SSD to the new one using Acronis TrueImage and an external USB drive controller. Rebooted, let Windows install the driver for the drive, rebooted once more, and the upgrade was done. Total time from start to finish was maybe 45 minutes.

Next, I ran the Blackmagic Design disk benchmark (I use a Blackmagic USB 3.0 Shuttle for video capture). The 840 EVO maxed out the dials for both read and write operations, which is a very healthy upgrade over the OEM Samsung SSD it replaced. This was without enabling Samsung's RAPID caching software, which I would recommend people stay away from (I used the software's ancestor with a OCZ Synapse caching SSD and wound up with difficult-to-detect-and-fix file corruption)

5 out of 5 eggsIncredible..

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-MTE500BW mSATA TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Speed, when used in a msata3 connection, i'm able to just about top out at the max speed allowed by the bus (6Gbps = 600MBs) and all this from a single drive!

Msata format gives you plenty of options to use this in. If your mobo doesn't come with an msata controller, you can purchase a PCIe adapter, or a 2.5" adapter OR you can even go external and purchase a enclosure with usb 3.0 out (however i would recommend finding one that allows for a sata connection so you can perform firmware upgrades to the ssd drive itself)

RAPID mode allows for almost double the speed specs based on the idea of "borrowing" 1gb of ram to use as super cache. Um, yes please ! (my laptop has 16gb of ram, so i have plenty to spare)

Samsung software is really nice. I never install OEM software but i'm keeping this, monitors the drive, gives you pretty statistics, easy firmware upgrades & can manually run Trim!

Cons: newegg is putting a premium on this device. Not sure why but its listed higher here than at other locations.

RAPID mode only allows to be paired with 1 samsung compatible ssd. For me my laptop has 2 drives so i had to pick which one i wanted it enabled on. Seeing that this seems to be an OS driving service, i figured i wouldn't get too much better speed for the OS drive so i attached t to my data drive. Hopefully something can change with a future update to all multi drive support

Other Thoughts: right now i wouldn't recommend getting this from newegg simply because newegg at this time, is charging more for this device than all other retailers i looked at. However if price isn't a concern, this is one sweet device.

Note - Samsung offers various capacities for this ssd (120gb, 256gb, 500gb & 1tb) "on paper" only the latter two sizes (500gb & 1tb) offer the higher iops specs. Not sure how much that will effect the numbers i'm about to list if your only able to get the 256gb model.

I'm using this msata drive as the "boot" drive (via msata) in my Dell XPS 9530 model paired with the Samsung 840 Evo 1tb 2.5" ssd as the "data" drive:

Laptop = Dell XPS 9530
CPU = i7-4702hq
RAM = 16gb @ DDr3 1600
OS = Win 8.1 x64

CrystalDiskMark 3.0.3 x 64 (3 pass @1gb)
Seq Read = 527.0MB/s
Seq Write = 508.1MB/s
512K Read= 459.6MB/s
512k Write = 462.6MB/s
4k Read = 39.97MB/s
4k Write = 93.71MB/s
4k QD32 Read = 397.9MB/s
4k QD32 Write = 361.4MB/s

As always, if you have questions, or concerns feel free to gmail my nickname!
