5 out of 5 eggsAmazing drive

Pros: Extremely fast drive. The new m.2 form factor is incredible. It seriously looks like RAM sitting flush to the motherboard. Finally bootable in most X99 motherboards.

Cons: Not bootable in some boards, do your homework. Seems to always be usable as a data drive though, i.e. the OS can see it even if the BIOS cannot. Takes up 4 PCIe2 lanes (that's the point I guess) so be careful where you put your cards or else those used up lanes can end up taking some away from your graphics card. Depends on your motherboard layout. Again, do your homework.

Other Thoughts: fastest drive you can get right now

4 out of 5 eggsOK

Pros: small, unobtrusive SSD. Did not buy it from the egg because they did not have it, got mine from Oz land. Works as a boot drive no problem on ASRock X99 Extreme 6 motherboard with Windows 7.

Cons: expensive

Other Thoughts: Would of rather they made a 1TB flavor of this, would of been even better.

5 out of 5 eggsBlazing fast SSD

Pros: If you want the fastest SSD out right now, this is it. You'll see read speeds of 1.1GB/sec or more with this in a board that supports it. Just blazingly fast. Basically, it is an 840 Pro that hangs right on your PCIe bus.

Will you notice the speed? Probably not a ton, all SSDs are "fast" by user standards, but it is cool to have and it really does deliver a major performance boost, unlike most other M.2 drives.

Cons: Doesn't work with Samsung's magician software. Unfortunately since this is an "OEM" product, their consumer software won't talk to it. So no info/updates via Magician. Doesn't need any, but it would be nice.

Other Thoughts: If you wish to use this as a boot drive, check your motherboard and make sure it is compatible. This drive WILL work for that, but you need a compatible OS (Windows 8.1 or newer) and a compatible board. Don't get mad if you buy a board without checking and it doesn't work. Also, you may need to enable support for booting from it in your UEFI, not all boards are set to do it by default.

I use mine with the ASUS X99-DELUXE, which lists it as supported, and it boots like a charm.

If you just want it as a data drive, it should work in anything with an M.2 slot. Alternatively you can get a PCIe to M.2 adapter and use that.

5 out of 5 eggsFastest consumer level SSD on the market

Pros: The first drive not bottlenecked by it's interface in years. The 2GB/sec the pci-e x4 lanes give provide enough bandwidth to let this ssd fully stretch it's legs. Easily hits 1.4GB/sec.

MLC 2 bit per cell nand provides more than enough durability for home usage, the pc will die long before the endurance runs out on the cells. Even TLC 3 bit per cell nand has proven itself reliable for home use.

The drive is made by Samsung. This is a huge pro and it's not because I am a samsung fanboy. Samsung has a very unique position in the SSD market. They control every part of their ssd from the nand cells to the dram cache to the controller to the firmware. It is all designed and manufactured by Samsung. This allows them to get unparalleled levels of compatibility. It also allows samsung to get every ounce of performance squeezed out of the configuration since they designed every nook and cranny of the ssd they know how to get the most out of it and can custom write their firmware to be as efficient as possible and that is exactly what this drive is.

If you want to own the pinnacle of SSD performance this is the drive you want.

Cons: There are always some cons as well nothing in this world is perfect. The price for this ssd isn't the greatest. Nowadays anything over 1 dollar per mg is a very premium price for a consumer home use ssd. You can easily find high performing 512GB SSD's in the 50 cents per GB range.

The m2 slot is still fairly uncommon it's not easy finding a home for this ssd and most people will need a new motherboard if they want to take advantage of the fastest ssd on the market.

Shorter warranty than most premium ssd's. This has a very premium price where is the premium warranty?

The controller supports pci-e 2.0 instead of 3.0. More of a neutral than a con just slightly con because the actual nand isn't even fast enough to saturate the 2.0 x4 connection.

No 1TB capacity offered. SSD's have seemed to concentrate into 4 main capacity points: 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, 1TB. An SSD line should offer something near all 4 levels. Prices have come down so much most people are buying 256GB at the very smallest and 1TB is much more reasonable to buy with prices as low as 40 cents per GB 400 dollars for 1TB. Many people would like to see this offered in 1TB capacity.

Other Thoughts: I hope samsung increases the availability and marketing of the pcie-3.0 successor to this drive

The even FASTER Samsung SM951 the first consumer home use SSD with a native pci-e 3.0 x4 controller is right on the horizon. It uses NVMe instructions allowing the system to take advantage of the characteristic specific to nand over pci-e. Previously AHCI instructions have been used and they were designed with big spinning platters as the storage medium. By switching to NVMe speed is increased power use is decreased. These drives are rated at under 10 mW (0.0099 W or less) power use during idle and that is lower than all the other ssd's currently out.

Slated for released 2nd half of 2014 which is why I bring this model up. It should see it's release very soon and will steal the performance crown from the xp941. Before you commit this high of a premium price because you want the fastest ssd in the world you should definitely wait for the sm951. If you cave and buy the xp941 you will only have the fastest ssd for a few months instead of a whole year or more.
