5 out of 5 eggsExcellent!

This review is from: SAMSUNG 850 PRO MZ-7KE256BW 2.5" 256GB SATA III 3-D Vertical Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: - Excellent performance
- Very high endurance
- RAID 0 is impressive

Cons: - Magician software is terrible

Other Thoughts: I have 2 of these drives in RAID 0 on an Asus Maximus VII Gene. TRIM works without issue. I had to verify that all chipset and storage drivers were up to date, but everything works.

HOWEVER: Samsung Magician cannot detect or even recognize these drives while the storage controller is set to RAID and they are in a RAID array. This is a non-issue and doesn't affect anything.

In order for me to verify the SMART data and ensure everything was functioning normally, I used CrystalDiskInfo, which worked fine.

I haven't had any other issues besides Magician being garbage.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat SSD

This review is from: SAMSUNG 850 PRO MZ-7KE256BW 2.5" 256GB SATA III 3-D Vertical Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: I really like the Magician Software that comes with it. It is straight forward and very customizable. The SSD itself performs very good. The warranty and reliability lured me to this SSD.

Cons: Not really a con, but.....I replaced my Crucial MX100 128gb SSD with this one. I was hoping this SSD would boot my system up faster, but it didn't. I am sure it is faster in every benchmark, though.

Other Thoughts: I am glad I bought this SSD and I do not regret it.

5 out of 5 eggsFast SSD

This review is from: SAMSUNG 850 PRO MZ-7KE256BW 2.5" 256GB SATA III 3-D Vertical Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Installed this drive in a new build with OS. I can bring Win 7 down and up in around 5 or 6 seconds running Core I7 4790K processor.
The Drive is very fast.
No lag like with regular disc drives, when loading web pages I wait on the web server and internet not the drive. Running applications is great and super fast.

Cons: Magician software is not necessary and from what I've read the firmware update is bad, like really bad, so I won't be doing that.

Other Thoughts: OS boots so fast you got to be ready if you are going into setup. LOL, missed it a time or two, but no complaint there.
I have two set up in a RAID. Was a little concerned about reliability but I backup everything multiple times (yeah I'm OCD when it comes to backup) so I'm not really worried.

4 out of 5 eggsAmazingly fast

This review is from: SAMSUNG 850 PRO MZ-7KE256BW 2.5" 256GB SATA III 3-D Vertical Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Super fast. Like 600Mbps random on Atto fast.

Cons: I didn't expect for them to not come with a tray, but maybe that was my own dumb fault for not reading package description.

5 out of 5 eggs3D NAND

This review is from: SAMSUNG 850 PRO MZ-7KE256BW 2.5" 256GB SATA III 3-D Vertical Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: 3D NAND is cheaper to manufacture.

It stays below 35c internally. Like. Always. I checked with software at multiple points during installing apps & benching.

Stays cool to the touch... Always. Even with no fans.

Compared to the 840 pro I put in my media center PC, this one is:

- cheaper
- slightly better performance

Cons: None that I could find.

Other Thoughts: Samsung is making strides in this technology!

4 out of 5 eggsSamsung SSD 850 Review

This review is from: SAMSUNG 850 PRO MZ-7KE256BW 2.5" 256GB SATA III 3-D Vertical Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: The drive is fast
Works well after being setup properly, meaning correct SATA cables, correct bios settings, correct drivers installed, configured through windows properly and all that jazz.

Before the bad firmware update my speeds were around 580 MB/s read and 550 MB/s write. Both of these were lowered 30 MB/s + after the bad firmware update.

Cons: Expensive

Magician software is not necessary and I felt even with the descriptions on the website the information provided on what each setting does was not enough

A firmware update was prompted to me via magician and I installed it, rebooted and checked the drive.. Everything fine. Later I rebooted again and I had a bsod, tried just about everything until I realized that the firmware update had killed my drive.

So I kept checking bios, seeing if something else failed.. and eventually put in my windows CD and tried to repair windows... got no where ----- then I reinstalled windows and turned out the drive was alive (new firmware was on it as well).

So I didn't lose 'all' of my data, pretty much the configs and what other information came back in a windows.old (which I deleted later).

So what happened was this, when the firmware updated it changed my C:\ drive to a D:\ drive and apparently this cannot be changed anywhere BUT windows.. so when windows tried to boot, it was trying to boot from C:\ but the only thing in C:\ now was the 'system reserved' that windows creates on a drive for the filesystem, it was trying to boot from that instead of the drive itself and there was no way of fixing it besides reinstalling windows..

Some people found a work around by booting to last known working configuration but either I couldn't get to that page or it was already too late as I found out too late in a panic to get my rig working again.

Now the drive has been working fine since BUT it is indeed slower than what it was prior to the firmware update (every single person I've spoken to on the new firmware also claims they lost speed in both read/write/4k) Now this isn't really noticeable as the drive is still fast, but it is an annoyance that my drive will always be slower than what it was.

Samsung support didn't reply to anything on their facebook page and they have no support forum on their website (probably to avoid negative comments).. shortly after they pulled the firmware update and as of 5/13/2015 they have never put out any other firmware for this drive.

Now I'm not sure if anyone lost their drive to this, but I'm certain if you just reinstall windows the drive will work again. At least for me all it did was change the letter of the windows file system and the boot drive around to the point where you would just bsod everytime it tried to boot into windows because there was no operating system being found.

So as of now, no real complaints. I did not ever reinstall samsung magician, just manually installed the proper intel RST driver for my chipset (without the software via device manager) set my pc to high performance, and disabled hibernation mode and let the drive be.. didn't touch any other settings.

Other Thoughts: I'm a little upset with Samsung and how this firmware update had NO warning what so ever that data may be lost or come corrupt.

Also for future reference firmware updates should NEVER, EVER be made available via your software. A firmware update should only be grabbed from the website itself with detailed patch notes on what was changed and if it's actually needed. At the time I thought firmware update = improvements but I didn't need that firmware update for any reason what so ever and ended up becoming very stressed having to reinstall my operating system.

Also I didn't even bother calling their support as most likely they would want me to RMA and send the drive back to them, which would take probably 4+ business days to arrive to them.. another 2 weeks sitting there for 'confirmation and processing' then another 5-8 business days for it to return to me...

Luckily the drive lived.. just sharing this terrible experience so nobody else has to go through with it.
