5 out of 5 eggs3D NAND

This review is from: SAMSUNG 850 PRO MZ-7KE256BW 2.5" 256GB SATA III 3-D Vertical Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: 3D NAND is cheaper to manufacture.

It stays below 35c internally. Like. Always. I checked with software at multiple points during installing apps & benching.

Stays cool to the touch... Always. Even with no fans.

Compared to the 840 pro I put in my media center PC, this one is:

- cheaper
- slightly better performance

Cons: None that I could find.

Other Thoughts: Samsung is making strides in this technology!

4 out of 5 eggsSamsung SSD 850 Review

This review is from: SAMSUNG 850 PRO MZ-7KE256BW 2.5" 256GB SATA III 3-D Vertical Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: The drive is fast
Works well after being setup properly, meaning correct SATA cables, correct bios settings, correct drivers installed, configured through windows properly and all that jazz.

Before the bad firmware update my speeds were around 580 MB/s read and 550 MB/s write. Both of these were lowered 30 MB/s + after the bad firmware update.

Cons: Expensive

Magician software is not necessary and I felt even with the descriptions on the website the information provided on what each setting does was not enough

A firmware update was prompted to me via magician and I installed it, rebooted and checked the drive.. Everything fine. Later I rebooted again and I had a bsod, tried just about everything until I realized that the firmware update had killed my drive.

So I kept checking bios, seeing if something else failed.. and eventually put in my windows CD and tried to repair windows... got no where ----- then I reinstalled windows and turned out the drive was alive (new firmware was on it as well).

So I didn't lose 'all' of my data, pretty much the configs and what other information came back in a windows.old (which I deleted later).

So what happened was this, when the firmware updated it changed my C:\ drive to a D:\ drive and apparently this cannot be changed anywhere BUT windows.. so when windows tried to boot, it was trying to boot from C:\ but the only thing in C:\ now was the 'system reserved' that windows creates on a drive for the filesystem, it was trying to boot from that instead of the drive itself and there was no way of fixing it besides reinstalling windows..

Some people found a work around by booting to last known working configuration but either I couldn't get to that page or it was already too late as I found out too late in a panic to get my rig working again.

Now the drive has been working fine since BUT it is indeed slower than what it was prior to the firmware update (every single person I've spoken to on the new firmware also claims they lost speed in both read/write/4k) Now this isn't really noticeable as the drive is still fast, but it is an annoyance that my drive will always be slower than what it was.

Samsung support didn't reply to anything on their facebook page and they have no support forum on their website (probably to avoid negative comments).. shortly after they pulled the firmware update and as of 5/13/2015 they have never put out any other firmware for this drive.

Now I'm not sure if anyone lost their drive to this, but I'm certain if you just reinstall windows the drive will work again. At least for me all it did was change the letter of the windows file system and the boot drive around to the point where you would just bsod everytime it tried to boot into windows because there was no operating system being found.

So as of now, no real complaints. I did not ever reinstall samsung magician, just manually installed the proper intel RST driver for my chipset (without the software via device manager) set my pc to high performance, and disabled hibernation mode and let the drive be.. didn't touch any other settings.

Other Thoughts: I'm a little upset with Samsung and how this firmware update had NO warning what so ever that data may be lost or come corrupt.

Also for future reference firmware updates should NEVER, EVER be made available via your software. A firmware update should only be grabbed from the website itself with detailed patch notes on what was changed and if it's actually needed. At the time I thought firmware update = improvements but I didn't need that firmware update for any reason what so ever and ended up becoming very stressed having to reinstall my operating system.

Also I didn't even bother calling their support as most likely they would want me to RMA and send the drive back to them, which would take probably 4+ business days to arrive to them.. another 2 weeks sitting there for 'confirmation and processing' then another 5-8 business days for it to return to me...

Luckily the drive lived.. just sharing this terrible experience so nobody else has to go through with it.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent piece of hardware.

This review is from: SAMSUNG 850 PRO MZ-7KE256BW 2.5" 256GB SATA III 3-D Vertical Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Approx. 4x the speeds i received with my old hybrid drive.
Easy installation.
Looks good.
Windows 7 Ultimate boot from BIOS in about 6 seconds.
Virtually no lag upon casual day to day use as with a disc drive.
Some of the loading screens on my games do NOT exist anymore, they are a mere flicker then i am in game.

Cons: The only complaint i have thus far is the Sata and power connector are not mounted firmly to the device, instead they have a bit of flex that i am wary of. I made do with the situation though, and I do not find it a serious enough issue to dock an egg.

Other Thoughts: Now that I've tried the 256 and I'm certain of the improvement over my old raid array, I'll be definitely purchasing two more in either the 512 GB or 1 TB size to completely do away with any storage on disc drive except for data backups. Extremely pleased, thank you for the great product Samsung. Will update this case if i run into any issues down the road.

5 out of 5 eggswhat if...

This review is from: SAMSUNG 850 PRO MZ-7KE256BW 2.5" 256GB SATA III 3-D Vertical Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Small, light, simple.

Cons: The supplied software didn't want to do its job. It wouldn't recognize that I had the drive hooked up to a USB port via a SATA/USB cable. I had to use MiniTool's Partition Wizard, my favorite tool of that kind, to set up a partition and format it.

5 out of 5 eggsUpdate to earlier post

This review is from: SAMSUNG 850 PRO MZ-7KE256BW 2.5" 256GB SATA III 3-D Vertical Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: FAST
Simple, intuitive software.
Cloning from Samsung Data Migration was a breeze. No errors or issues.
F.A.S.T.!!!

Cons: Retail package did not include SATA to USB transfer cable
Samsung Data Migration was not included on the software disk.

Other Thoughts: With an older AM3 MOBO and an Athlon 2600 CPU, the original HDD had sequential read/write speeds of 88/90 MB/s. The 850 Pro clocked in at about 245/227 MB/s; just under half of it's advertised speed. After swapping in an ASUS A88X MOBO and A10-7850k Black Edition APU with the cloned SSD, the sequential read/write skyrocketed to 445/427 MB/s. That's an increase of about 500% of the original HDD, and close enough to the advertised speeds of this SSD for my dad to be very happy! Now I need one to replace my Agility 4, which comes in at 339/190 MB/s.

5 out of 5 eggsSpinning Rust IS Dead

This review is from: SAMSUNG 850 PRO MZ-7KE256BW 2.5" 256GB SATA III 3-D Vertical Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Quiet,VERY FAST,easy to install. Very impressed with the speed, especially since I'm coming from a WD Black Sata3 on my last build. Magician software works great, no issues at all so far.

Cons: None that I can detect

Other Thoughts: I had no idea that the throughput on these was so high. Coming from a 1TB hard drive to this is like night and day. 10 seconds to the desktop-FLAT. Open a program, blink and you'll miss the load. Nice unit, well constructed and slick looking. Did a full Win7 Pro install, with all updates and drivers, in under 30 minutes. Can't wait to get an XP941 and see what that is like :)
