4 out of 5 eggsLove it

This review is from: SAMSUNG 850 PRO 2.5" 512GB SATA III 3-D Vertical Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-7KE512BW

Pros: - bought this on sale for 200.00 bucks.
- read/write speeds are amazing, huge jump in speed from a HDD
- comes with a 10 year warranty.

Cons: - does not come with any cables. you would think after spending a few hundred on a product that it will come with all the necessary components to make it work. Fortunately if you're doing a new build, or just replacing or upgrading you should already have the cables. It comes with a set up disk which basically everyone will tell you to throw away as the software is probably outdated, just go to their website and download the drivers directly to get the most recent drivers.

Other Thoughts: Not a huge difference between this one and the 500 gb 850 evo except warranty I believe.
So either is a great choice. If you happen to catch this one on sale, get it. you wont be sorry.

2 out of 5 eggsLasted a year and a half

This review is from: SAMSUNG 850 PRO 2.5" 512GB SATA III 3-D Vertical Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-7KE512BW

Pros: Fast boot time and applications loaded faster too.

Cons: Only lasted a year and a half. No warning errors. Windows crashed once and I had to shut down and reboot. Worked fine for a few more minutes and then everything froze. After shutting down again, the computer would just go directly to BIOS and the drive was no longer listed. The two 1 TB Samsung 850 Pro drives worked fine, but this 512GB drive was just no longer there. Tried plugging in with different cords, making it an eSATA drive, put it in a different computer, and put it in a USB enclosure. Nothing could see the drive anymore to even try and run tests on it. First drive I've ever had that completely died on me. I've had a couple drives start having a lot of errors and I've copied what I wanted off them and stopped using them. This it the first one though that just quit. I do regular backups and I didn't get rid of the old hard drives I replaced with these SSD drives, so I didn't loose much and was back up in a couple hours. If I do get another SSD for a boot drive, this wont be the one I get.

Cons: Little higher price, but worth it for the peace of mind with the 10 year warranty

4 out of 5 eggsGreat SSD

This review is from: SAMSUNG 850 PRO 2.5" 512GB SATA III 3-D Vertical Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-7KE512BW

Pros: I'm using this driver with a WD TV player and it has been working well and the transfer speeds are fast.

Cons: When I called into register this drive with SamSung the girl on the phone told me that if something went wrong with it I need to take it back to where I got it from and I asked her you know it has a 10 year warranty on it and if it fails 9 years and 11 1/2 months before the warranty is up do you really think they going to give me a replacement SSD,so she talks to her supervisor and she is clueless as well.

It's pretty sad when all they needed was to tell me to register it online and that it can't be done over the phone.

Other Thoughts: I have purchased a few Sandisk Extreme SSD's as well and I like them better for the reason they don't hassle about not having a clue about how to register their product, the SamSung's are a good SSD with a 10 year warranty but I'm going to stick with Sandisk as I find their customer support to be much better.

2 out of 5 eggs3 failures in two weeks installed in Supermicro raid

This review is from: SAMSUNG 850 PRO 2.5" 512GB SATA III 3-D Vertical Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-7KE512BW

Pros: - Super fast, wonderful when not failing. Price is reasonable.

Cons: We currently have 9 of these Samsung 850 Pro 512 GB drives in a Raid 6 on a Supermicro SSG-2028R-E1CR24H server. The OS is VMWare ESXi v6, hosting 2 Ubuntu servers and 4 windows servers.

We had 2 hot spares prior to when the failures started. A little over 2 weeks ago, one of the drives failed, and the raid rebuilt immediately using the hot spare. We pulled the drive and shipped it to Samsung for replacement. Last week another drive failed and the raid rebuilt using the remaining hot spare. Today I discovered we have another failure, and now we no longer have an optimal Raid 6. We are running on a degraded raid array, and I overnighted another drive to get the raid back to optimal ASAP. This is a very important server, and 50 employees will not be able to work if this thing goes down. I am very stressed about this.

I called Samsung customer support today and told them I want to open a ticket. The Samsung rep told me he sees the warrantee history of our recent drive replacements. That room stays below 70 degrees F (21 Celsius) all the time, so either Samsung is shipping defective drives or this server is eating drives.

I am not a hardware guy - I specialize in software. I prefer to simply buy good drives, throw them in the server, and then expect them to work. This has not been fun. I am currently very stressed that we could lose the raid. My plan if that happens is to create a smaller raid from the remaining good drives and then restore from backup.

Other Thoughts: I am hopeful Samsung will offer some insight, and I am even more hopeful the replacement drive arrives and rebuilds before we have another failure. I wonder if updating the raid card firmware could help prevent failures.

4 out of 5 eggsQuick and easy

This review is from: SAMSUNG 850 PRO 2.5" 512GB SATA III 3-D Vertical Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-7KE512BW

Pros: Works as intended. Speeds are phenomenal... I had purchased an SSD from Samsung when SSD's were brand new, and it was awful. Couldn't ever get the firmware updated, many programs simply would not install or update on the drive, and often had times of corrupted data pop up for me. But I checked all the reviews for their new ones and decided I would give it another try. I was not disappointed.

Cons: Not exactly a con, but if you don't have a case that can properly fit an SSD you might have issues getting it properly secured in your case. I wish it would have at least came with the miniature screws to place into a drive slot for my case :x had to bum some off a friend.

Other Thoughts: I don't particularly recommend the software that comes with it. There really is no need for it.
