Crucial is the company's name, and "crucial" is the type of location you'd want to put this rugged little beauty.

When they first made laptops, this is the kind of drive they would have killed for: light weight, low power, rugged (rated at 1500 Gs shock test) and reliable (one million hours mean time between failures (MTBF). Using the SATA II interface and the 2.5 inch form factor makes retrofitting this 32 GB solid state drive into a laptop a breeze. Nor is it limited to laptops: any system that needs to be physically rugged, or have a silent drive with low power requirements would be happy to get one of these.

So, check out the possibilities and satisfy yourself that this is the drive you want. We'll be here when you're ready.

  • newegg SSD Storage Technology Acting without any moving parts, the Crucial CT32GBFAB0 solid state drive (SSD) boasts multiple advanced features including zero mechanical noise, faster data rates compared to conventional HDDs, over 1-million-hour life span, ultra-low power consumption and impressive shock, vibration and extreme temperature resistance. With these breakthrough capabilities, the SSD meets all the demanding requirements for high-performance mobile computing.
  • newegg 2.5" Form Factor The Crucial CT32GBFAB0 solid state drive is specifically designed for notebook computers equipped with a 2.5" SATA drive bay.

4 out of 5 eggsSSD AINT FOR VISTA

Pros: SSD is fast no doubt about it!

Cons: It does not work worth a flip with Vista!

VISTA does not like SSD!

VISTA does love WD Raptor 150 or that new VELOCIRAPTOR.

Other Thoughts: Suggest you change from Vista to Windows 7
or back to XP, your call?

1 out of 5 eggsGood on paper, real world performance not good

Pros: SSD, quiet. Not much else.

Cons: NO cache.

Windows XP install took over 3 hours.
Boot times on clean install were near 2 minutes.
XP would "pause" and freeze up when certain read-write combinations that were very typical in windows were executed.

Returned the Crucial SSD and got a 30GB OCZ Vertex SSD and couldn't be happier.

Other Thoughts: Using an Intel Atom 330 Dual core motherboard.

1 out of 5 eggsWickedly slow

Pros: Cheap

Cons: Cheap

Other Thoughts: In this case this Crucial SSD stands for Slow, Stuttering Device. Installed XP pro on it with an Atom based embedded system board and kind of works. Big lag time between double clicking an item before it runs. I used a Transcend 16GB 300x compact flash on this embedded board instead and it just destroys the Crucial SSD in every single aspect albeit at 2x the price.

I then tried installing windows 7 beta on a laptop and I can't even get through the install before the SSD gives up and disappears from off the SATA bus(I tried 8 times before giving up). Spend a little more and get a better device.

1 out of 5 eggsSlow performance! Don't buy this drive!

Pros: No moving parts; cheap.

Cons: This HD is very slow! It took 5 times as long as my 5400rpm stock hard drive to install Windows XP and took forever to install Windows Updates. XP runs very slowly and hangs on this drive. I have AHCI SATA mode enabled and have all drivers installed but it still is buggy. Notice how the description of the drive doesn't mantion anything about speed?

Other Thoughts: This drive does fit into my Lenovo T400, although I couldn't use the screws to attach it to the HD mount since they made the drive too wide.

2 out of 5 eggsFast Drive?

Pros: Hmmm. Hmmmmmm. Still thinking. Hmmmm. None.

Cons: I bought the drive from a store and returned it twice. I bought the SSD drive so that I could run my OS on it to have better performance and reduce start time. I installed windows vista 64 ultimate on the drive, which took at least an hour. I finally got vista installed and booted the computer only to find that the startup time was much longer than it used to be and once vista was running I was greeted by several blue death screens and an OS that was working so slow that it was inoperable . I called tech support and they said to update drivers but I was never able to get Vista stable enough to install drivers or do any updates from the internet. I even tried to install Linux and still had similar results. I spent about 20 hours and went through two new drives before I decided to give up. I expected this drive take my computer into the future, instead this drive took my computer into the past, perhaps the year 1993, yeah that’s about how fast my computer was operating

Other Thoughts: , not to mention it brought back the wonderful days of commonplace blue death screens. I finally returned the junk and bough a Western Digital 300G raptor and my computer now runs like it should. I am not sure why the drive didn’t work on my PC. My rig has a Q6600 cpu, two 9600gt’s, and an XFX 790i ultra MBO. Perhaps there was a driver conflict with the new drive, I may never know. I think I will wait another 3 years until this technology gets proven before I buy another.

5 out of 5 eggsFast reads - amazing 108MB/sec

Pros: HD Tune 2.55 reports average ### 108.6 MB/sec reads ###, access time 0.4 ms, burst rate 43.1 MB/sec, CPU usage 10.0% in my HP2133 Mini-Note (1.2Ghz). Includes 5 year warranty. 32GB size is emough for XP SP2, applications and files. Static write leveling included - extends lifetime. Compatible SATA interface and dimensions as standard 2.5in hard disk. Uses less power (1/2) than normal drive.

Cons: SSD writes are typically slow, rated 60MB/sec sequential on this device vs 80MB/sec on the similar specifications OCZ SSD here at Newegg. This drive is expensive for only 32GB storage. The similar OCZ is cheaper, but has only 1 year warranty. For unknown reasons, the 64GB version of this drive is rated 30MB/sec writes. OCZ specs do not degrade at 64GB, but may not be correct. Check yourself, to be sure.
