Not worth being cheap
- Pros: It only takes a small strip of electrical tape to block the obnoxious lights on the Tracer version. Umm, the gold or black heatspreader looks mildly cool.
- Cons: Lousy, unreliable, BSODS with even a 5 MHz overclock, requires insane voltage just to reach 800 MHz, and 4-4-4-12 timing doesn't seem that impressive. DIMMS WILL INEVITABLY go bad repeatedly. Just complete garbage. And here I was under the delusion that Crucial was a reputable manufacturer.
- Other Thoughts: This is now the 2nd pair I've had to RMA. The first ones that I bought were actually high-density garbage modules. Naturally, these lasted about two weeks. When I RMA'd all they had only the Tracers in low-density, so I got those... which was kind of cool at first until the novelty of having seizure-inducing Christmas lights inside my case wore off.
I'm going to feel guilty selling the 3rd pair to someone online, knowing they're going to regret the purchase anywhere from two weeks to a year, but I need the money to offset the purchase of a ram kit I can hopefully trust. But...I prolly can't afford the bad karma.
Bad Bad Bad
- Pros: Failed after 11 months on a system i built where i provided a 12 month guaranty. Time spent trouble shooting was ridiculous, only to find from reading the comments of others, that these were going bad by the thousands. Little did i know i was installing a ticking time bomb in a PC. You will be sorry you installed this memory!!
- Cons: It just makes me mad these are still being sold when it should have been figured out that these are being sold defective!!
- Other Thoughts: AVOID!!!
Don't bother with these.
- Pros: Absolutely nothing positive to say about these.
This is a response to "LEARN TO READ" below now that I've had substantial time and experience with these sticks. Both versions, the prior defective ones and the replacement fixed batches.
I've gone through 20 of these, 8 from the old batch, 4 from the old batch never used, 8 from the "fixed" batch, and these are still the worst memory sticks I've ever had the displeasure of dealing with. Out of those 16, I've only been able to get ONE working for more than 6 months.
Could never get these to work with all the tweaks I've tried. Even with manual adjustments to the BIOS to support the higher voltage (1.8v default versus 2.0v and 2.2v that these expected) settings that the sticks were expecting to have. On two boards, setting memory to 2.0v made it fail to boot.
I've had these brand/series/specs of sticks for about 2 years now and have had to RMA them 4 times.
- Cons: When I first got these sticks, they were the AA804 version. Worked for a few weeks then BSOD'ed constantly. Memtest gave a lot of errors no matter how I had them in (singles, pairs, swapped around or all in). They also would not run at advertised timings. I RMA'ed. Got back another 4 sticks from the AA804 series. Ran for about 1 1/2 months until I had the same issues again. Not wanting to deal with these after I RMA'ed them for the second time... I bought Corsair sticks, put them in the PC and put the RMA'ed replacements in the closet. I couldn't bring myself to sell them as-is, new and sealed and have it be someone else's problem.
Last year, when talking about these sticks to a friend, I looked up the reviews and saw that a new version had come out which fixed the problems. I RMA'ed again.
They were from the AA80A batch but still ended with .8FE5. After emailing, I was assured that these were the fixed versions. They came in plastic clamshells instead of a bag. I gave them a try
- Other Thoughts: Random BSOD's and Memtest errors after 3 months. Sent them in again. Got another set, AA80A.8FE5 batch. Been a year since I've had the "fixed" 2.0v versions. They still don't run at advertised speeds and they still developed errors. I gave up on RMAing these things. They've been tested in more than 12 different motherboards between 4 brands (ASUS, Gigabyte, Biostar and MSI) and have failed in all. I went through exhaustive individual stick testing. 3 out of 4 failed, the one that remains is in my test box. I don't trust that one stick at all, regardless of that it still remains functional in spite of its 3 brethren (and the 12 used before it) that have all failed to behave properly.
Crucial has forever lost me as a customer. These may be cheap now, but they weren't when they first came out, not to mention the amount of wasted time dealing with these. Far too late to get a refund, too much time passed for these to still have problems. No excuses for this. Stay away.
