1 out of 5 eggsThis will only become a buyer's remorse.

This review is from: Crucial M4 CT512M4SSD2 2.5" 512GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: I picked this up at a time when it was listed at a fairer price of 78 cents per gigabyte. It technically offers everything an SSD is expected to offer*. *But see below.

Cons: The longevity of this drive (512GB 070H firmware) is terrible. I was naive and wrote a positive review before I had enough time to learn how poorly the M4 performs.

My first M4 continually slowed down (full I/O usage according to task manager while I was doing nothing) causing my system to stutter. It eventually died after only a month of usage.

My second M4 replacement from RMA still is slow to respond and feels overall like a downgrade in performance from my old mechanical 7200 RPM drive. It's throughput is still good but I often find myself waiting on simple things like the Context Menu (mouse right click) or opening of folder contents. But this one hasn't died... yet.

Other Thoughts: If you buy this, it is ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY that you keep regular backups of your data. These drives will die without warning. I regret ever buying an M4 and I'm completely appalled that Newegg thinks these are deserving of a price hike. If anything, they should be cheaper considering the above.

1 out of 5 eggsJust like others, FAILED

This review is from: Crucial M4 CT512M4SSD2 2.5" 512GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Faster than HDD.
Was cheaper than most 512GB SSD.
Great SSD while lasted

Cons: Died.
Data lost.
No easy way to recover data like the HDD after it dies.

Other Thoughts: This hard drive unfortunately stopped completely working when I was trying to back the data up. After trying multiple times to reconnect it, I was not able to recover a lot of data on it :(
I even tried to connect it as an external hard drive to my laptop via USB.
As per original Desktop, after it died the desktop will no longer boot at all. My TV (Yes I plugged my PC into 32 inch TV :p) would not display the boot process, all it would show is no signal. After physically removing the SSD, the PC would start booting as normal and the TV would recognize the signal. I thought it was my GPU, but look at that, nope it's the SSD.
A bit disappointed as now you can get 1TB Samsung SSD for basically the same price, but then again it's been almost 2 years.

GG Crucial M4 SSD.
Working on an RMA.

As to all future and everyone previously owning and still not having issues with this drive, please back it up with one of your hard drives as you will lose your data when it fails :(

3 out of 5 eggshad problems

This review is from: Crucial M4 CT512M4SSD2 2.5" 512GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Still working after I upgraded the firmware.

Cons: I originally bought this for one of my laptops and it remained in that laptop for about 6 months. After six months it started going in and out and locking up my computer. I really enjoyed working 4 hours in cad trying to do an as-built and loosing all that work because my computer crashed. I replaced the drive and it set in my drawer for over a year. I recently tried it out again and did a little searching online about its problems and someone said update the firmware. I am currently using the drive and have not had any problems since I changed out the firmware but then again its my game drive so who knows.

Other Thoughts: Quality is in question.

5 out of 5 eggsThe drive rocks, but this price rots

This review is from: Crucial M4 CT512M4SSD2 2.5" 512GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Awesome drive, was best capacity when it came out

Cons: Newegg price is way out of line as of this review date

Other Thoughts: I paid over $800 for mine when they were brand new, and have no regrets. The drive was awesome.

But that was then, and this is now. Crucial's new M500 series is much better/faster, and that's what you should buy. I already have two M500-960GB drives, and they are awesome.

Newegg, I love you guys, but you are way off on pricing on this one item. You can buy it direct from Crucial for $256 - I know as I just bought another one from them for that price. $399 (Newegg price as I am typing) was a great deal when Newegg first offered it at that price, and I am a huge newegg fan.

But the bottom line is, this is no longer the hot new thing - the M500 series is the superior replacement. If you're on a budget and don't mind last year's greatest hit, go for this drive. But don't pay a penny over $256 for it. I just checked and Crucial doesn't seem to be advertising it on their website - probably because they are pushing the new M500 series. But if you call their toll-free number, they will happily sell you a nice new M4-512GB for $256 with free shipping. But if you can afford it, my strongest advice is to buy the $599 M500-960GB drive from Newegg.

Newegg staff, I love you guys - honest. Just telling the truth - that's all. What makes your site so great is the honest feedback, and in this one isolated case I'm afraid you've been slow to reduce the price in line with the market.

5 out of 5 eggsFast upgrade for those still on mechanical HDDs.

This review is from: Crucial M4 CT512M4SSD2 2.5" 512GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: There were some concerns about a 5400 hour bug that affected the M4 models but Crucial now ships their SSDs with updated firmware (free of said bug). My particular model came with the new 070H firmware installed. Other than that, I have nothing to say that isn't already covered by other reviewers. Just buy one. You won't regret it.

Cons: No cons.

5 out of 5 eggsQuality product

This review is from: Crucial M4 CT512M4SSD2 2.5" 512GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Fast, reliable, excellent quality, low power.

Cons: Still expensive but price is coming down

Other Thoughts: I own five of these units as well as three other Crucial M4 256 GB drives. Two of the 512 GB drives are arranged as a RAID 0 array on an Adaptec 6805 controller. These are my Win7 Pro system drive. A second pair runs off the Adaptec 6805 as a RAID 0 dedicated Photoshop cache. Coupled with an i7 3930k on an ASUS P9X79 WS mobo w/64 GB RAM this system chews through the scenery in Photoshop like no other setup I have built. It does composite images from 8, 16, or 32 frames of data from my D800E in seconds instead of minutes or hours.

It also does image separation (RIP) work for my printers w/o popping a sweat - I can setup a 17 " x 84" print job and know it will be available in minutes instead of hours

The Crucial M4/Adaptec 6805 RAID 0 systems give AIDA 64 benchmarks of 1,000 MB/s linear read, 684 MB/s random read and read access of 0.22 ms. Compare this with a RAID5 array on the same 6805 controller consisting of 4 x WD 2 TB Enterprise drives: 328 MB/s linear read and 15 ms access.

All my Crucial M4 units consume less power than a single rotating drive, making cooling a non-issue.

The fifth Crucial M4 - 512 GB is the main drive in my Dell Alienware laptop with a second 256 GB M4 as the cache drive on same. Nice setup and the battery lasts a lot longer than previously with a mechanical drive.

If you can afford 'em, use 'em.

5 out of 5 eggsA++ would buy again

This review is from: Crucial M4 CT512M4SSD2 2.5" 512GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: FAST! Yeah, it's not the latest and greats, but it's much faster than my SSD SATA II Crucial drive from 4 years ago. Great benchmarking numbers.

Cons: None. But, I always want more space. MOAR!

5 out of 5 eggsFast and reliable

This review is from: Crucial M4 CT512M4SSD2 2.5" 512GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Fast. Reliable(*well, I've only had it six months). Big (for an SSD). Inexpensive for its capacity. Low power consumption. From a company known for quality. I still have a rust spinner for bulk storage, but am enjoying the performance of SSD.

Cons: Typical SSD issues with random writes. Luckily that's not my workload. Still not big enough for my total requirements, I need a 750Gb SSD to replace my rust spinner. Cost per gigabyte is still significantly higher than spinning rust.

Other Thoughts: SSD is now viable as sole storage for laptops, due to the ever- improving cost vs capacity. It's not quite there yet for desktops and servers, spinning rust still provides terabytes of storage for the same cost that SSD provides gigabytes of storage, but am looking forward to it getting there because not having any overhead for random seeks makes things so much faster overall for typical read-oriented workloads.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive

This review is from: Crucial M4 CT512M4SSD2 2.5" 512GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Fast and reliable. I have ordered over 200 of these drives for the company I work for over the last year. I have only seen 2 fail so far. So it's hard for me to believe the other reviews that state they have a high failure rate. I was so impressed with these drives, I bought one for home.

Cons: NONE.

Other Thoughts: I would highly recommend these drives. I was impressed with speed and dependability.

5 out of 5 eggsWorking great

This review is from: Crucial M4 CT512M4SSD2 2.5" 512GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Faster OS and application loading, relatively large capacity, no issues after 6 months.

Cons: More expensive than a mechanical drive

Other Thoughts: I'm using this drive as my boot and application partitions, with a large mechanical drive as bulk storage.
