5 out of 5 eggsWorking Smoothly

Pros: This little storage device is in my Xtreamer Media Player, running Windows 7 and it does a pretty good job. It is pretty fast and it just do it.

Cons: none so far.

Other Thoughts: It holds the OS and some programs for browsing and such, just perfect for my needs. I would recommend this item to anyone.

2 out of 5 eggs5000 Bug

Pros: It is a SSD

Cons: After 5373 hours of use the SSD kept giving me a BSOD, I was able to get the Crucial firmware to work with no issue at all so I dont know about the issue with the other user not being able to get the firmware to work.

Other Thoughts: I have had this SSD for over a year now and I do not recommend it just because of this problem. I gave this product 2 eggs because I was able to get it working again with the firmware update but I never should have had to do that.

5 out of 5 eggsThe M4 SSD1 Works

Pros: First off, it's fast. Despite having lower speeds than some other solid state drives, it still far surpasses traditional hard disks. Second, it has worked perfectly so far.

Cons: None so far, but see below.

Other Thoughts: First, since it took me awhile to figure out, I want to mention that this drive, the SSD1, is identical to the Crucial M4 SSD2 except that it is only 7 mm thick. The SSD1 was designed for laptops, but it works just fine in my desktop (I bought this one because it was cheaper at the time).
Second is the firmware issue. If this drive has firmware before the 0309 revision it will fail after 5200 hours. Mine shipped with the more recent 000F firmware, which is supposed to be stable. I will update this review if the drive starts having problems. I should note that one advantage of this drive is that it does not use the Sandforce controller, which has demonstrated a variety of reliability issues. Still, be aware that no SSD should be considered a reliable data drive, since when they do fail it tends to be without warning. I use this one for Windows and very little else.

3 out of 5 eggscheap, but buggy firmware

Pros: Cheap. Works with Linux. Not the fastest SSD but relatively stable on the 000F firmware. Good enough.

Patch to latest firmware (using Linux livecd from Crucial's site) didn't fail for me on ~100 machines.

Also works great on my Win7 desktop.

Cons: Once spent a weekend patching about 100 of these as they hit the ~5000 hour mark and threatened to wipe out a corner of the datacenter. Worst firmware bug I've ever seen.

Other Thoughts: We were testing these in a small number of machines, because it's consumer hardware, which is a scientific way of saying it's made entirely out of rust and poop.

Looks like they used a Linux livecd to do the ISO, yet no Linux tool to do an online patch. That might be for the best though. You don't wanna wrap SSH in for-loop and insta-brick 100 boxes.

Seen some issues with mdadm not sending the right trim commands when putting drives in software raid on some distros, but that's a Linux issue, not a Crucial M4 issue.

Haven't used in a *BSD environment yet.

1 out of 5 eggsdead after 5200 hours/1 year 2 months

Pros: Worked great until repetitive BSODs

Cons: The SSD is shipped with a buggy firmware that causes the drive to stop working at EXACTLY 5200 hours, even if you try to update the firmware, the downloader on Crucial's website will not detect the drive and you end up with a dead solid state.

1 out of 5 eggsHorrible SSD

Pros: Nothing about this product is good.

Cons: The entire device is an utter failure. Do not waste your money on it. It may be cheap, but that's only because it's bad.

Other Thoughts: This SSD was purchased brand new, and it worked like a dream (only because it's a SSD) for quite some time! Unfortunately, after around 6-7 months of use, the drive failed. After following all instructions given from the unhelpful Support at Crucial, the drive persisted to fail. I am well aware of all precautions and actions that must be taken when using a Solid state drive, so there is nothing that I have done on my part that is wrong.

After arguing with support, I finally received their replacement drive... a refurbished piece of JUNK. It has now just failed on me as well after only 4 months of use. This product is meant only for users who are preparing to fail.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Purchased as an upgrade for my dads computer, cost per gig is excellent, as well as the transfer rates....i was able to transfer almost 80 gigs in just under 10 minutes from a HDD to this SSD.

Cons: wish it came with some sort of optimization utility for tuning it

Other Thoughts: Doesn't use the SandForce controller!!!! Stay away from that one

1 out of 5 eggs3 out of 3 failed after 2-3 months

Pros: Easy to install, fast as promissed.

Cons: I used them on the main OS drives in Windows server 2008 and in Win7 Pro
In all the three cases I had to remove them and re-install the OS.
I do not recommend them.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid Drive is Solid

Pros: First SSD I've owned and was very impressed; computer boots in 15-20 seconds. I've noticed highly reduced load times in BF3 compared to my old drive.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I underestimated the size SSD I would need. Looking to to upgrade to a 128gb so I can fit a few more thing on there.
