5 out of 5 eggsBlinkin' LED's!

This review is from: Crucial Ballistix Tactical Tracer 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) Desktop Memory (with Red/Green Light) Model BLT2KIT4G3D1869DT2TXRG

Pros: These sticks of DDR3 1866 RAM were cheaper than the non-LED Crucial version. So I decided to take a risk.

Installation was a breeze. No problems with packaging or traditional installation stuff. The LED's will default to the first available setting, but when the control software is installed will result in a color party inside the case.

The reward for this product are sticks of RAM that not only perform all the dedicated RAM functions, but also make the inside of my case glow in one of several predetermined patterns. In two different colors!

The LED's are embedded at both the top and the bottom of the sticks, and while individual LEDs aren't configurable, the entire top can be one color, and the bottom can be a different color. The top and bottom sync their color patterns.

Temperature monitors also allow you to set alarms based on temperature that include warning about a temperature and shutting the computer down if the user selected thresholds are met.

If you don't like the patterns, you can also use the control software to turn off the LEDs entirely.

Cons: It would be nice if the RAM came in a solid color, bu I'm not arguing.

Other Thoughts: I bought the red/green combo. I would also like to get the orange/blue combo for my other slots as seen on a Youtube video.

5 out of 5 eggsBright!

This review is from: Crucial Ballistix Tactical Tracer 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) Desktop Memory (with Red/Green Light) Model BLT2KIT4G3D1869DT2TXRG

Pros: The LEDs on this ram are bright and true to their color. They make my case very bright. The ram was identified by my motherboard and it never gave me BSOD or any other problems. The heat sinks on them keep their temperatures very cool.

Cons: The software ti adjust the brightness and pattern of the LEDs does not dim the LEDs to a wide arrange. It has the option to adjust the brightness however it goes from the same level of dim to one level of bright.

4 out of 5 eggsGood memmory.

This review is from: Crucial Ballistix Tactical Tracer 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) Desktop Memory (with Red/Green Light) Model BLT2KIT4G3D1869DT2TXRG

Pros: The memory has low CAS timing (it could be even lowered to 8-8-8-27) at 1866Mhz.

Cons: Light intensity has only 2 levels bright and dim, even tough the crucial utility shows 4 levels.

Other Thoughts: In order to get stable operation an 1866 Mhz I have to bump up the voltage to 1.560 V. If you want to go beyond that you should push the voltage much higher which is getting in the the "danger zone" and would not recommend it.

4 out of 5 eggsCrucial Ballistix Tactical Tracer (2x4GB) Review

This review is from: Crucial Ballistix Tactical Tracer 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) Desktop Memory (with Red/Green Light) Model BLT2KIT4G3D1869DT2TXRG

Pros: The ram works. After some tinkering it, I was able to get them to reach 2100hz in my system however they did seem to be very stable. The timings stayed to the their spec. I have had these in my system since mid November of 2014, and none have failed. My system runs pretty much all day and night everyday of the week so it gets use.

The light shows is cool. It's better than others due to more than 1 led. They have 4 settings for different patterns and you can choose a different light effect for each individual stick. I really enjoyed that feature. I was able to buy a pair of blue and green led kit to match this one and no problems at all. I did match the speed and timings though, so keep that in mind if you plan to mix or add on later. These are expensive for ram, but the leds are a luxury effect I suppose.

Cons: The speed was not recognized at 1866hz or even 1600hz rating on first plug in. They needed to be overclocked to up to 1866hz. I wish I had waited for the price to come down. They are 30 dollars more now than when I purchase.

Software:
I know this is not a software review but since you use it to control the lights, which is the primary reason for buying the ram; I feel it is essential.

It is very lacking to say the least. There are 3 brightness settings: off, dim(faint) or bright.

The overall appearance of the software could have been programmed by a 13-15 year old in visual studio. There is a "fade" option I found for the LED effects, but no options available to set it. I know, what a tease, although people I have asked reported not seeing it. The "widgets are alright, but the rest of the functions didn't work.

Disclaimer: The software used to control the leds doesn't work with every motherboard. Some people have had issues. I believe the x79 chipset was having trouble for many boards.

Other Thoughts: Had I purchased the ram for the price it's offered currently and better supported software then it would have earned 5 eggs (stars). Otherwise its another luxury aesthetic for your pc.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks and looks cool while doing it

This review is from: Crucial Ballistix Tactical Tracer 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) Desktop Memory (with Red/Green Light) Model BLT2KIT4G3D1869DT2TXRG

Pros: Good speed and performance. The LEDS really add a cool effect to my case that really catches people's eyes. Make sure to configure your XMP profile in your UEFI to get the most out of these.

Cons: Price is a bit high for 8GB, even with the lighting effects.

Pros: Pretty as can be

Cons: Will not boot with 4th chip in

Other Thoughts: I purchased two of these sets (4 chips total). Three work fine but the system has only booted once with the fourth chip in of about 50 attempts.
